Reliable motion detection using microwave radar

The Didactum microwave motion detector uses modern Doppler radar technology to reliably detect movement and the presence of people, even through non-metallic obstacles such as plastic, glass, wood, or thin walls. This makes the sensor especially suitable for concealed installations and demanding environments such as server rooms, technical rooms, offices, or warehouses.

The sensor is simply connected to a free analog port (A1–A8) of a Didactum Monitoring System, is immediately ready for use (plug-and-play), and can be individually configured via the web interface and integrated into logic schemes so that targeted actions or alarms are triggered when movement is detected.

Individually configurable: detection range

The microwave motion detector can be selected during the ordering process to match the size of the area to be monitored.

Select detection range

0–4 meters

Ideal for smaller technical rooms, individual rack areas, or point protection.

0–6 meters

For medium-sized server rooms, offices, or monitoring several adjacent areas.

0–8 meters

For large server rooms, warehouses, or expansive corridor and entrance areas.

All three versions work according to the same Doppler radar principle and differ only in their maximum detection distance. Choose the appropriate range based on room size and the desired mounting height (recommended: approx. 3 m).

Motion detector design

The motion detector consists of a compact sensor housing and a separate wall mount for installation.

Sensor housing with radar module

Contains the integrated flat antenna and the electronics that transmit and receive microwave signals according to the Doppler principle.

Signal window

Area on the front of the housing through which the microwave signals are transmitted and received again.

Wall mount

Attached to the wall or ceiling with the included plugs and screws and holds the sensor housing.

A side RJ11/RJ12 connection (6P4C) is used to connect the sensor to the monitoring system or a sensor expansion unit. Two LEDs on the front of the sensor indicate the current status: red when movement is detected, green when no movement is registered.

Doppler radar instead of a classic PIR detector

The sensor works according to the Doppler principle: it emits a microwave signal in the 5.725–5.875 GHz frequency range and evaluates the change in the reflected signal as soon as an object or person moves within the detection range. Unlike classic infrared motion detectors (PIR), microwave radar reacts much faster and more precisely and can be used through materials such as plastic, glass, ceilings, wooden doors, or thin concrete walls.

Practical example: In many server rooms, air conditioning units create strong air currents that can cause classic PIR detectors to trigger falsely due to sudden temperature changes. The microwave motion detector is insensitive to such air movements and instead responds reliably to actual human movement — a clear advantage over PIR technology in air-conditioned rooms.

Connection to the monitoring system

The motion detector is connected via the supplied 2 m RJ11/RJ12 cable (6P4C) to a free analog port (A1–A8) of a Didactum Monitoring System and is automatically detected there in plug-and-play mode. Alternatively, the sensor can also be connected to a sensor expansion unit. The maximum cable distance between the sensor and the central or expansion unit is up to 100 meters.

Installation in two steps

Installation can be carried out on either a wall or a ceiling.

  1. Attach the wall mount to the desired position with the included plugs and screws; a mounting height of approx. 3 meters is recommended, aligned with the area to be monitored
  2. Connect the sensor to the monitoring system or a sensor expansion unit using the RJ11/RJ12 cable (6P4C) — the sensor is automatically detected

At a mounting height of 3 meters and a detection angle of 120°, the maximum induction radius is about 6 meters; the actual range depends on the selected model variant (4, 6, or 8 m).

Multiple sensors and greater range

For larger installations with multiple monitoring zones, the number of connectable motion detectors and the total cable length can be increased using a Didactum sensor expansion unit (8× analog, connected to the monitoring system via CAN bus). This allows even large or complex buildings to be monitored reliably and seamlessly without replacing the central unit.

Frequently asked questions

Which detection range should I choose?

For smaller technical rooms or individual rack areas, the 4-meter version is suitable; for medium-sized server rooms or offices, the 6-meter version; and for large server rooms, warehouses, or expansive areas, the 8-meter version. The choice depends on room size and planned mounting height.

What is the difference between a microwave radar sensor and a PIR motion detector?

A microwave radar sensor works according to the Doppler principle, reacts faster and more precisely than a classic PIR detector, and is insensitive to temperature changes such as air currents from air conditioning. In addition, the signal can pass through materials such as glass, plastic, or thin walls, which is not possible with PIR detectors.

How is the sensor mounted?

First, the wall mount is attached to the wall or ceiling with the included plugs and screws, ideally at a height of about 3 meters and aligned toward the monitored area. The sensor is then connected to the monitoring system via the RJ11/RJ12 cable.

Can the sensor also be installed behind walls or panels?

Yes. The microwave signal can pass through materials such as plastic, glass, ceilings, wooden doors, and thin concrete walls, making the sensor suitable for concealed or hard-to-access installations.

What do the LEDs on the sensor indicate?

The red LED lights up as soon as movement is detected, while the green LED indicates that no movement is currently registered.

How many motion detectors can I connect to a monitoring system?

The number depends on the available analog ports of the monitoring system. If more connections are needed, the number can be increased using a Didactum sensor expansion unit with additional analog ports.
