SHT 8800 – Active sensor for analog inputs

The active water sensor with analogue voltage output for smart home, building management systems and controllers

The Schabus SHT 8800 is an active water sensor with the switching principle “analogue voltage”. It is supplied with an operating voltage and, when water or a conductive liquid is detected, outputs a voltage level of approximately 80–90 % of the operating voltage. In the dry state the output is 0 V.

This voltage is evaluated high-impedance by an analogue input, for example in smart-home systems, building management technology or controllers with analogue inputs. Two V4A stainless-steel contacts, the corrosion-resistant potting in Wepuran® and an aluminium-reinforced mounting hole for secure installation make it a robust floor sensor.

The SHT 8800 is intended for regularly dry environments with only occasional water occurrences. It is not suitable for direct connection to Schabus water detectors.

⚠️

Important note: The SHT 8800 is an active sensor and is not suitable for direct connection to Schabus water detectors. Schabus water detectors are designed only for passive sensors with potential-free contacts. It is intended for controllers with high-impedance analogue inputs.

Detect water – as an analogue voltage signal

On contact with water the SHT 8800 generates a clear voltage increase that your system can evaluate continuously.

How the active sensor works

Active sensors such as the SHT 8800 have electronic internals and require an operating voltage.

  • On contact with water the output voltage changes, for example from low to high
  • Passive sensors, by contrast, work purely mechanically or conduct current directly on water contact
  • As soon as water touches the V4A contacts, the output voltage rises to approx. 80–90 % of the operating voltage
  • When the contacts dry again, the output falls back to 0 V
  • The input must be high-impedance; the sensor should only have to supply minimal current – typical for TTL or CMOS logic
  • Loading the output can damage the sensor or produce incorrect measured values

What is included in the box

The sensor is supplied with the material for mounting.

  • SHT 8800 active water sensor
  • Mounting material (1 screw, 1 wall plug)
  • Operating instructions

How the SHT 8800 is constructed

The SHT 8800 is a compact, fully potted sensor with permanently connected supply cable.

1

Compact, potted housing

The plastic housing measures 34 × 12 × 10 mm and is hand-potted in Wepuran®. The active electronics are thereby protected. The degree of protection is IP 68; the operating temperature range is −15 °C to +50 °C.

2

Two V4A stainless-steel contacts

The two rust-free contacts detect liquid contact directly. They should be located at the lowest point to be monitored.

3

Aluminium mounting hole

The integrated, aluminium-reinforced screw hole (Ø 3.2 mm) allows secure fastening – screw and wall plug are included.

4

LIYY connecting cable (3-core)

The white cable (3 × 0.14 mm², Ø 3.8 mm) is 4 m long. The cores: brown = operating voltage Ub (plus), white = sensor voltage / output, green = ground / 0 V.

5

Labelling

On the top side the type SHT 8800, the core assignment br(+), gr(−), wt = sense, the degree of protection IP68, the article number 200362 and the CE mark are printed.

Mounting and connection

Read the operating instructions carefully before mounting and commissioning.

Mounting the sensor

  1. Securely screw the sensor with screw and wall plug through the integrated aluminium mounting hole.
  2. Place the two V4A stainless-steel contacts at the lowest point to be monitored. A defined installation position is not required, as the sensor reacts directly to liquid contact.
  3. If the cable is too short it can be extended to a maximum of 20 m, e.g. with LIYY cable 2 × 0.14 mm² (article 300780).

Connecting the sensor

  1. Provide an operating voltage of 10 to 30 V DC (SELV/PELV). Connect the brown core to Ub (plus) and the green core to ground (0 V).
  2. Connect the white core (output) to a high-impedance analogue input of your system.
  3. Evaluate the signal: approx. 0 V means “dry”, approx. 80–90 % of the operating voltage means “wet”.
💡

Important: With DC voltage, electrolysis occurs in a damp environment and there is a risk of corrosion. The sensor is therefore intended for regularly dry environments and only occasional water occurrences – not for permanent moisture.

Which liquids does the sensor detect?

The SHT 8800 requires a conductive liquid, i.e. water with a sufficient number of free ions.

  • Detects conductive liquids such as tap water, saline water or coolants
  • Also detects liquids with low conductivity
  • Desalinated or multiply distilled water as well as pure water without free ions cannot be reliably detected
  • Non-conductive media such as oils are not detected
  • The medium should have a density of at least 0.7 g/cm³ and a certain conductivity
  • The output voltage is almost linear with the operating voltage and is somewhat higher with salt water than with tap water or distilled water

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between active and passive water sensors?

Active sensors such as the SHT 8800 have electronic internals and require an operating voltage. On water contact they respond with a change in the output voltage (e.g. from low to high). Passive sensors, by contrast, work purely mechanically or conduct current directly on water contact.

Can the SHT 8800 be operated with Schabus water detectors?

No. The SHT 8800 is not compatible with the water detectors from Elektrotechnik Schabus. It is specially designed for controllers with high-impedance analogue inputs, for example smart-home systems or building management technology.

What does “high-impedance input” mean?

A high-impedance input does not load the sensor measurably. The sensor should only have to supply minimal current, as is typical for TTL or CMOS logic. Loading can damage the sensor or produce incorrect measured values.

How is the cable wired?

Brown = operating voltage Ub (plus), white = sensor voltage / output, green = ground / 0 V.

With which voltage is the sensor operated?

With 10 to 30 V DC as safety extra-low voltage (SELV/PELV). In the wet state the output voltage is approx. 80–90 % of the operating voltage; in the dry state it is 0 V. The output has an impedance of approx. 500 Ω and may be loaded with max. 20 mA.

How far may I extend the cable?

The sensor cable (3 × 0.14 mm²) is flexible and can be extended to a maximum of 20 metres, e.g. with LIYY cable 2 × 0.14 mm² (article 300780), in order to maintain signal stability and voltage level.

Does the SHT 8800 also react to distilled water?

The sensor requires a conductive liquid, i.e. water with a sufficient number of free ions. It also detects liquids with low conductivity, but desalinated or multiply distilled water cannot be reliably detected. The medium should have a density of at least 0.7 g/cm³ and conductivity.

Which liquids can the sensor detect?

All conductive liquids, for example tap water, saline water or coolants. Non-conductive media such as oils cannot be detected.

Is the sensor suitable for permanently damp environments?

No. The SHT 8800 is intended for dry normal environments with occasional water contacts. In a permanently damp environment, because the sensor operates with DC voltage, electrolysis can lead to corrosion of the contacts.

How is the sensor mounted?

The sensor is mounted so that the two V4A stainless-steel contacts are located at the lowest point to be monitored. A defined installation position is not required, as it reacts directly to liquid contact. For permanent and secure placement it should be firmly screwed; a mounting hole in the aluminium base carrier is provided for this purpose.

How long is the warranty?

The statutory warranty of at least 2 years in the EU applies. In addition the manufacturer Schabus offers a 5-year guarantee that can be registered online.
