Firmware of the Didactum Monitoring Devices
The Firmware of the Didactum Monitoring Systems forms the heart of the devices and controls the communication between hardware and software. It is stored in the flash memory and can be updated if required. Firmware updates are essential to fix bugs, close security vulnerabilities and integrate new features or improvements.
Didactum regularly provides new firmware versions for the monitoring systems. Before each update, it is recommended to back up the current configuration and measurement data, as certain update methods may delete all settings and data.
The firmware update can be performed in two ways
Via the web interface
From certain versions onwards, the new firmware can be installed directly via the web GUI of the monitoring system. After the upload and restart, the update is complete.
Via USB stick
The firmware is copied to an empty USB stick. The monitoring system automatically detects and installs the update. This method is particularly suitable for older devices or very old kernel versions.
For devices with very old firmware, the use of a special update tool is recommended, which resets the system to factory state. A downgrade to an older firmware version is also possible if necessary.
Companies with many devices benefit from the Didactum Manager, which allows firmware updates to be rolled out centrally and automatically to numerous systems.
Regular firmware updates ensure secure, stable and feature-rich operation of the Didactum Monitoring Systems.

Current T-Series & all PDUs
The firmware can be used on all current devices of the T-Series as well as on all current PDUs.
100V, 500III & 550III
The firmware can be used on all devices of the 100V Series, 500III Series and 550III Series. One generation before the T-Series.
100, 500 & 550 (old generation)
The firmware can be used on all devices of the 100 Series, 500 Series and 550 Series (old generation – even before the 100V).

Didactum Monitoring – Firmware Update and Recovery Options
Complete guide to all update and recovery options for Didactum Monitoring devices – including determining the firmware version, update via HTTP (web interface), update via USB stick, restoring factory settings, backing up and restoring saved configurations, as well as complete device recovery.
Important note before each update: Please back up your settings before performing an update. During the update or recovery, certain configurations may be lost (logic schemes, sensor data and parameters). Read the notes for the respective update to understand the particularities. Take notes or screenshots of your configuration if a backup is not possible.

01 Determine firmware version
Before you perform an update, you need to know the currently installed firmware version of your Didactum device so that you can download the appropriate update file.
Option A – via the web interface
In the web interface, navigate to:
System menu → Info → Firmware version
The displayed version number indicates the current driver status.
Option B – via the system statistics
Overall statistics → System info → Firmware version
02 Back up settings (reservation)
This step should always be carried out before an update or recovery. The reservation saves the current configuration of the device as a file that can be imported again later.
Download settings (create backup)
- Log in to the web interface
- Navigate to: System menu → Firmware → Download backup settings
- The file is downloaded to your computer as
settings.zor - Save the file in a safe place (e.g. on a network drive or local hard disk)
The backed up file settings.zor contains the network parameters, sensor configurations, user data and alarm settings. It can be imported again via the web interface as well as via USB stick.
What is backed up?
- Network configuration (IP address, gateway, DNS)
- Users and passwords
- Sensor configurations and descriptions
- Alarm rules and notification settings
- SNMP configuration
- E-mail settings
What is not backed up?
- Historical sensor data (measurement history)
- Logic schemes (must be backed up separately)
03 Firmware update via HTTP (web interface)
The update via the web interface is the simplest and recommended method to update the firmware of your Didactum device.
Requirements
- Settings backed up (see chapter 2)
- Suitable firmware file downloaded (see chapter 1 for correct file naming)
- Stable network connection to the device ensured
Step-by-step instructions
- Log in to the web interface
- Navigate to: System menu → Firmware → Upload source → From local filesystem
- Click “Choose file”
- Select the appropriate firmware file (see downloads above)
- Click “OK” to start the upload
- After the upload is complete, the message “Firmware upload” appears in the web interface
Recommendation for kernel update: If both a kernel update (firmware-kernel.zor) and a web interface update are available, always perform the kernel update first and then the web interface update.
Update duration and behavior
- Total duration: approx. 2 minutes
- During the update, the ERR LED on the front panel blinks
- After completion: all LEDs briefly switch off, device restarts
- After the restart (30–60 seconds after the LEDs switch off) the web interface is reachable again
Never restart the device manually during the update. This can damage the firmware and make a complete re-flashing necessary.
Import sensor configuration
Via the same upload dialog, a previously backed up sensor configuration file (settings.zor) can also be imported:
- System menu → Firmware → Upload source → From local filesystem
- Select the file

04 Firmware update via USB stick
The update via USB stick allows the firmware to be updated even when the web interface is not reachable or a local network connection is missing.
Requirements
- USB stick formatted with the FAT32 file system
- Suitable firmware file downloaded
- File name must not be changed (the processor searches for a fixed file name)
Step 1 – Firmware update via USB
For devices from version 2.7.1:
- Download the file
firmware.zor(web interface update) - Optional: additionally download
firmware-kernel.zorfor the kernel update - Recommendation: update the kernel first, then the web interface
- Format the USB stick with the FAT32 file system
- Copy one file to the USB stick (keep the file name)
- Insert the USB stick into the device’s “HS” USB input
- Wait until the device automatically detects the stick and starts the update process
Step 2 – Reset IP address or user via USB
If the web interface is not reachable, service files are available (for download as tools.zip or tools-DESKTOP-2M75R26.zip):
- Copy the desired file to the USB stick (keep the file name)
- Insert the USB stick into the HS USB input
- Wait until the process is completed (LEDs switch off, restart occurs)
- Remove the USB stick during the restart
Step 3 – Apply saved settings via USB
- Format the USB stick with the FAT32 file system
- Copy the backup file to the USB stick and rename it to
settings.zor - Insert the USB stick into the HS USB input
- Wait until the process is completed
USB process – important notes
- Remove the USB stick during the restart (when all LEDs switch off)
- Never restart the device manually during the process
- If an error occurs during the update, the ERR LED lights up permanently
05 Restoring factory settings
Restoring the factory settings resets the device to its original default values. This is necessary when the device no longer functions correctly or the web interface is no longer reachable.
When factory settings are restored, all user-defined configurations are lost. Be sure to create a backup beforehand (chapter 2).
Method A – via the web interface
- Log in to the web interface
- Navigate to: System menu → Firmware → Reset to factory settings
- Enter confirmation and start the process
- The device restarts with the factory settings
Method B – via USB stick (when web interface is not reachable)
Download the service file settings.zor (from the tools.zip archive or tools-DESKTOP-2M75R26.zip archive) and follow the USB instructions from chapter 4.
After restoration, the following default access data apply:
- IP address:

Method C – hardware reset (physical button)
Some device series have a hardware reset button on the rear or underside of the device:
- Locate the button labelled “RESET”
- Press and hold the button with a pointed object (e.g. toothpick or pen) for 10–15 seconds
- Release the button when the LEDs light up and go off again
- The device restarts with factory settings
06 Restore saved settings
If you previously created a backup of your settings (file settings.zor), you can restore them in different ways.
Method A – restore via the web interface
- Log in to the web interface
- Navigate to: System menu → Firmware → Upload source → From local filesystem
- Select the backed up file

- The system imports the configuration and restarts if necessary
Method B – restore via USB stick
- Format the USB stick with the FAT32 file system
- Copy the backup file to the USB stick and rename it to
settings.zor - Insert the USB stick into the HS USB input
- The device automatically detects the file and applies the configuration
- ERR LED blinks during the process – all LEDs switch off during restart
- Remove the USB stick as soon as the LEDs switch off
What is restored?
- Network configuration (IP, gateway, DNS, VLAN)
- User accounts and passwords
- Sensor descriptions and configurations
- Alarm rules and thresholds
- E-mail and SNMP settings
- Notification configurations
Historical sensor data (measurement histories) are not restored by the settings recovery.
07 Complete device recovery (re-flashing)
In rare cases, it is necessary to completely rewrite the firmware of your Didactum Monitoring System. Reasons for this include a malfunction or a firmware update that changes the memory organization.
Please back up your configuration before performing a complete system recovery. All user data and settings are lost during this process!
Required accessories
- An SD card (SDHC < 32GB)
- An SD card reader
- The program “Etcher” (etcher.balena.io)
- The current firmware image for system recovery
Preparing the SD card
- Insert the SD card into the card reader
- Open the Etcher program on your computer
- Select the firmware file and the drive
- Click the “Flash!” button to start the write process
After the write process has completed, you can restore the firmware of your Didactum Monitoring System.
Performing system recovery
- Set the “N-R” dip switch of your monitoring system to the R position for Restore
- Insert the SD card described by the firmware image into the SD card slot of your Didactum Monitoring System
- Restart the device. The “Error” LED now begins to blink. This means that the firmware is being written to the monitoring system
- Wait until the “ACT” LED lights up. Then remove the SD card
- Set the “N-R” dip switch back to N
- Restart the device
08 LED status display during the update
The front side of the device indicates the status of the update or recovery process via the LED displays.

| All LEDs off | Device restarts – now remove USB stick (for USB update) |

Final update checklist
- Current firmware version noted (System menu → Info)
- Settings backed up (
settings.zordownloaded) - Screenshots of the current configuration created (logic schemes, alarm rules)
- Suitable firmware file downloaded (check file name against device series)
- Kernel update applied first (if available), then web interface update
- Update process waited for (approx. 2 minutes), device not restarted manually

Complete system recovery
During a complete system recovery, the Didactum monitoring device is reset to factory settings and all individual configurations as well as stored data are deleted.
