Firmware for Didactum Monitoring Devices
The firmware of Didactum monitoring systems is the heart of the device, controlling communication between hardware and software. It's stored in flash memory and can be updated as needed. Firmware updates are essential for fixing bugs, closing security gaps, and adding new features or improvements.
Didactum regularly releases new firmware versions for its monitoring systems. Before every update, we recommend backing up your current configuration and measurement data, since certain update methods can erase all settings and data.
Firmware updates can be performed in two ways
Via the web interface
Starting with certain versions, new firmware can be uploaded directly through the monitoring system's web GUI. Once the upload finishes and the device restarts, the update is complete.
Via USB stick
The firmware is copied onto an empty USB stick. The monitoring system detects and installs the update automatically. This method is especially useful for older devices or very old kernel versions.
For devices running very old firmware, we recommend using a dedicated update tool that resets the system to its factory state. Downgrading to an older firmware version is also possible if needed.
Companies with many devices benefit from the Didactum Manager, which allows firmware updates to be rolled out centrally and automatically across numerous systems.
Regular firmware updates keep Didactum monitoring systems running securely, stably, and with the full range of features.

Current T-Series & all PDUs
This firmware can be used on all current T-Series devices as well as all current PDUs.
100V, 500III & 550III
NEW updated firmware can be used on all 100V Series, 500III Series, and 550III Series devices. One generation before the T-Series.

We have identified a CRITICAL FIRMWARE ISSUE affecting firmware versions 7.3.0-b170 and newer. Because of this issue, smoke sensors do not function correctly. Since smoke detection is a safety-critical function, we strongly recommend updating all affected Didactum devices to the latest firmware version 7.3.0-b222 as soon as possible.
100, 500 & 550 (older generation)
This firmware can be used on all 100 Series, 500 Series, and 550 Series devices (older generation, prior to the 100V).

Didactum Monitoring – Firmware Update and Recovery Options
A complete guide to all update and recovery options for Didactum monitoring devices — including checking the firmware version, updating via HTTP (web interface), updating via USB stick, restoring factory settings, backing up and restoring saved configurations, and full device recovery.
Important note before every update: Please back up your settings before performing an update. Certain configurations can be lost during an update or recovery (logic schemes, sensor data, and parameters). Read the notes for the specific update to understand its particulars. Take notes or screenshots of your configuration if a backup isn't possible.

Determine the firmware version
Before performing an update, you need to know the firmware version currently installed on your Didactum device so you can download the correct update file.
Option A – via the web interface
In the web interface, navigate to:
System menu → Info → Firmware version
The version number shown indicates the current driver level.
Option B – via system statistics
Overall statistics → System info → Firmware version
Back up settings (reservation)
This step should always be performed before an update or recovery. The reservation saves the device's current configuration as a file that can be re-imported later.
Download settings (create a backup)
- Log in to the web interface
- Navigate to: System menu → Firmware → Download backup settings
- The file is downloaded to your computer as
settings.zor - Save the file in a secure location (e.g. on a network drive or local hard disk)
The saved settings.zor file contains network parameters, sensor configurations, user data, and alarm settings. It can be re-imported via the web interface or via USB stick.
What gets backed up?
- Network configuration (IP address, gateway, DNS)
- Users and passwords
- Sensor configurations and labels
- Alarm rules and notification settings
- SNMP configuration
- Email settings
What isn't backed up?
- Historical sensor data (measurement history)
- Logic schemes (must be backed up separately)
Firmware update via HTTP (web interface)
Updating via the web interface is the simplest and recommended method for updating your Didactum device's firmware.
Requirements
- Settings backed up (see chapter 2)
- Correct firmware file downloaded (see chapter 1 for the correct file naming)
- Stable network connection to the device confirmed
Step-by-step instructions
- Log in to the web interface
- Navigate to: System menu → Firmware → Upload source → From local file system
- Click "Select file"
- Select the correct firmware file (see downloads above)
- Click "OK" to start the upload
- Once the upload finishes, the web interface shows the message "Firmware Upload"
Recommendation for kernel updates: If both a kernel update (firmware-kernel.zor) and a web interface update are available, always perform the kernel update first, then the web interface update.
Update duration and behavior
- Total duration: approx. 2 minutes
- The ERR LED on the front panel blinks during the update
- Once complete: all LEDs briefly turn off, and the device restarts
- After the restart (30–60 seconds after the LEDs turn off), the web interface is reachable again
Never manually restart the device during an update. This can damage the firmware and require a full re-flash.
Importing a sensor configuration
You can also import a previously saved sensor configuration file (settings.zor) through the same upload dialog:
- System menu → Firmware → Upload source → From local file system
- Select the
settings.zorfile - Click "OK"
Firmware update via USB stick
Updating via USB stick allows you to update the firmware even when the web interface is unreachable or there's no local network connection.
Requirements
- USB stick formatted with the FAT32 file system
- Correct firmware file downloaded
- The file name must not be changed (the processor looks for a fixed file name)
Step 1 – firmware update via USB
For devices running version 2.7.1 or later:
- Download the
firmware.zorfile (web interface update) - Optional: also download
firmware-kernel.zorfor the kernel update - Recommendation: update the kernel first, then the web interface
- Format the USB stick with the FAT32 file system
- Copy one file onto the USB stick (keep the file name)
- Plug the USB stick into the device's "HS" USB port
- Wait until the device automatically detects the stick and starts the update process
Step 2 – resetting the IP address or user via USB
If the web interface is unreachable, service files are available for download (as tools.zip or tools-DESKTOP-2M75R26.zip):
- Copy the desired file onto the USB stick (keep the file name)
- Plug the USB stick into the HS USB port
- Wait until the process is complete (LEDs turn off, device restarts)
- Remove the USB stick while the device is restarting
Step 3 – restoring saved settings via USB
- Format the USB stick with the FAT32 file system
- Copy the backup file onto the USB stick and rename it to
settings.zor - Plug the USB stick into the HS USB port
- Wait until the process is complete
USB process – important notes
- Remove the USB stick while the device is restarting (when all LEDs turn off)
- Never manually restart the device during the process
- If an error occurs during the update, the ERR LED lights up permanently
Restoring factory settings
Restoring factory settings resets the device to its original default values. This is necessary when the device is no longer working correctly or the web interface is no longer reachable.
Restoring factory settings erases all custom configurations. Be sure to create a backup beforehand (chapter 2).
Method A – via the web interface
- Log in to the web interface
- Navigate to: System menu → Firmware → Reset to factory settings
- Confirm and start the process
- The device restarts with factory settings
Method B – via USB stick (if the web interface is unreachable)
Download the service file settings.zor (from the tools.zip or tools-DESKTOP-2M75R26.zip archive) and follow the USB instructions in chapter 4.
After the restore, the following default credentials apply:
- IP address:

Method C – hardware reset (physical button)
Some device series have a hardware reset button on the back or bottom of the device:
- Find the button labeled "RESET"
- Press and hold the button with a pointed object (e.g. a toothpick or pen) for 10–15 seconds
- Release the button once the LEDs light up and go off again
- The device restarts with factory settings
Restoring saved settings
If you previously created a backup of your settings (file settings.zor), you can restore it in several ways.
Method A – restoring via the web interface
- Log in to the web interface
- Navigate to: System menu → Firmware → Upload source → From local file system
- Select the saved
settings.zorfile - Click "OK"
- The system imports the configuration and restarts if necessary
Method B – restoring via USB stick
- Format the USB stick with the FAT32 file system
- Copy the backup file onto the USB stick and rename it to
settings.zor - Plug the USB stick into the HS USB port
- The device automatically detects the file and imports the configuration
- The ERR LED blinks during the process – all LEDs turn off during the restart
- Remove the USB stick once the LEDs turn off
What gets restored?
- Network configuration (IP, gateway, DNS, VLAN)
- User accounts and passwords
- Sensor labels and configurations
- Alarm rules and thresholds
- Email and SNMP settings
- Notification configurations
Historical sensor data (measurement history) is not restored when restoring settings.
Full device recovery (re-flashing)
In rare cases, it's necessary to completely rewrite the firmware of your Didactum monitoring system. Reasons for this include a malfunction or a firmware update that changes the memory layout.
Please back up your configuration before performing a full system recovery. All user data and settings are lost during this process!
Required accessories
- An SD card (SDHC < 32GB)
- An SD card reader
- The "Etcher" program (etcher.balena.io)
- The current firmware image for the system recovery
Preparing the SD card
- Insert the SD card into the card reader
- Open the Etcher program on your computer
- Select the firmware file and the target drive
- Click the "Flash!" button to start the write process
Once the write process finishes, you can restore the firmware of your Didactum monitoring system.
Performing the system recovery
- Set your monitoring system's "N-R" DIP switch to the R (Restore) position
- Insert the SD card with the firmware image into the SD card slot of your Didactum monitoring system
- Restart the device. The "Error" LED will now start blinking. This means the firmware is being written to the monitoring system
- Wait until the "ACT" LED lights up, then remove the SD card
- Set the "N-R" DIP switch back to N
- Now restart the device
LED status indicators during the update
The LEDs on the front of the device indicate the status of the update or recovery process.
| LED behavior | Meaning |

| ERR LED blinking | Update or recovery in progress – file is being installed |
| ERR LED off, ACT LED blinking fast | Update completed successfully – restart follows |
| All LEDs off | Device is restarting – remove the USB stick now (for USB updates) |
| ACT LED blinking normally | Restart complete – device ready for operation |
| ERR LED lit permanently | Error occurred during the update – full recovery required |
Update completion checklist
- Current firmware version noted (System menu → Info)
- Settings backed up (
settings.zordownloaded) - Screenshots of the current configuration taken (logic schemes, alarm rules)
- Correct firmware file downloaded (file name checked against device series)
- Kernel update installed first (if available), then the web interface update
- Update process waited out (approx. 2 minutes), device not manually restarted
- After restart: web interface reachable and firmware version updated
- Configuration checked for completeness
- Configuration file re-imported if needed (
settings.zor)
Full System Recovery
During a full system recovery, the Didactum monitoring device is reset to factory settings, and all individual configurations and stored data are deleted.
