The active mini float switch made of V2A stainless steel with logic-level output for controllers and automation
The Schabus SHT 8080 is an active mini float switch with the switching principle “logic level”. It is supplied with an operating voltage and, when the float is raised, outputs a voltage level equal to the operating voltage. With the float down the output is LO (0 V), with the float up it is HI.
The output is current-limited by a resistor and is evaluated high-impedance by an input, for example in home automation, building management systems, programmable controllers or microcontroller boards. The float body made of V2A stainless steel and the contacts hand-potted in Wepuran® make it a robust switch for level detection.
The SHT 8080 works with a mechanically actuated switching contact (reed technology) as a changeover switch: turning the float body over is not required. The switching contact actuates from approx. 4 cm level height. It is not suitable for direct connection to Schabus water detectors.
Important note: The SHT 8080 is an active sensor and is not suitable for direct connection to Schabus water detectors (not compatible with the Schabus water detector series SHT 5000). Schabus water detectors are designed only for passive sensors with potential-free contacts. It is intended for controllers with high-impedance inputs.
Detect level – as a logic level
The SHT 8080 switches between 0 V and the operating voltage depending on the float position.
Switching principle “logic level”
Output LO = 0 V, HI = Ub − 0.1 V (at Ub = 10 V and I = 10 mA). Float down LO, float up HI.
Changeover switch
Switching principle changeover: turning the float body over is not required.
Switching point from 4 cm
The switching contact actuates from approx. 4 cm level height – for water level signalling and reliable level detection.
For many liquids
Suitable for all liquids with a density of at least 0.7 g/cm³, e.g. water, heating oil, diesel, vegetable oil and lubricating oils.
V2A stainless steel
Corrosion-resistant material made of V2A stainless steel, contacts hand-potted in Wepuran®.
TTL, CMOS and PLC
Directly connectable to high-impedance logic circuits; with shared operating voltage also to TTL or CMOS inputs. Operating voltage 5 – 42 V DC.
Extremely long service life
Up to 1 trillion switching cycles at 5 V / 1 mA, 10 billion at 5 V / 10 mA.
Cable extendable up to 20 m
4 m LIYY control cable (3 × 0.14 mm²), extendable to a maximum of 20 m.
How the active float switch works
The SHT 8080 has current limiting and requires an operating voltage. The output reports the float position as a voltage level.
- Float down: the output is LO (0 V)
- Float up (raised): the output is HI, i.e. at the level of the operating voltage
- The switching contact is actuated mechanically; the conductivity of the liquid is not decisive
- The float works reliably in all media with a density of at least 0.7 g/cm³
- The output is current-limited by a resistor (1 kΩ) and may only be connected to high-impedance inputs
- High-impedance interrogation of the state is a prerequisite for long, wear-free operation
- The operating voltage (e.g. 5 V or 12 V) must be shared with the evaluating circuit
- The switch is designed for very low switching currents; no direct load may be switched

How the SHT 8080 is constructed
The SHT 8080 is a compact stainless-steel float switch with permanently connected supply cable.
Float body made of V2A stainless steel
The corrosion-resistant float body rises with the liquid level and actuates the switching contact mechanically. The dimensions are length 59 mm × Ø 28 mm.
Switching contact in reed technology
The contacts are hand-potted in Wepuran®. The contact works as a changeover switch and actuates from approx. 4 cm level height.
Current-limited logic-level output
The output is current-limited by a resistor (output impedance 1 kΩ, recommended max. output current 20 mA). The degree of protection is IP67; the temperature range is −15 °C to max. +60 °C.
LIYY connecting cable (3-core)
The white cable (3 × 0.14 mm², Ø 3.8 mm) is 4 m long. The cores: brown = + operating voltage, white = output voltage, green = ground.
Mounting and connection
Read the operating instructions carefully before mounting and commissioning.
Mounting the float switch
- Install the float switch vertically, inclined by a maximum of 30°.
- For vertical mounting the optional mounting bracket (article 300787) is recommended. Alternatively the float can be fixed through a suitable bushing on a pipe or holder.
- Route the cable in a dry environment or in a protective conduit. If the cable is too short it can be extended to a maximum of 20 m.
Connecting the float switch
- Provide an operating voltage of 5 to 42 V DC. Connect the brown core to plus and the green core to ground.
- Connect the white core (output voltage) to a high-impedance input of your circuit. The operating voltage must be shared with the circuit.
- Evaluate the signal: LO (0 V) means float down, HI (operating voltage) means float up.
Important: Do not switch a direct load. The float switch must be connected to a high-impedance input. The lower the current, the longer the service life.
Which liquids does the float switch detect?
Because the switching contact is actuated mechanically, the conductivity of the liquid plays no role.
- Works reliably in all media with a density of at least 0.7 g/cm³
- Suitable for water, heating oil, diesel, vegetable oil, lubricating oils and other liquids
- Also detects demineralised water and oil-containing liquids
- Unlike sensors with open electrodes there is no risk of electrolysis

Frequently asked questions
What does “active float switch” mean?
An active float switch generates an electrical voltage signal; with the SHT 8080 a change from 0 V to the operating voltage. This makes it particularly suitable for controllers with high-impedance logic inputs such as TTL or CMOS circuits.
Can the SHT 8080 be operated with Schabus water detectors?
No. The SHT 8080 is not compatible with the water detectors from Elektrotechnik Schabus, for example the SHT 5000 series. It is intended for independent controllers with logic inputs, not for the potential-free inputs of the water detectors.
How does the switching logic work?
With the float down the output is LO (0 V), with the float up it is HI (operating voltage). The contact switches at a liquid level of approx. 4 cm (Low → High). Because it is a changeover switching principle, turning the float body over is not required.
How is the cable wired?
Brown = + operating voltage, white = output voltage, green = ground.
With which voltage is the float switch operated?
With 5 to 42 V DC. The output is 0 V at LO and Ub − 0.1 V at HI (at Ub = 10 V and I = 10 mA). The output impedance is 1 kΩ; a maximum output current of 20 mA is recommended.
What must I observe when connecting?
The float switch must be connected to a high-impedance input. The operating voltage (e.g. 5 V or 12 V) must be shared with the circuit. No direct load may be switched.
How much current can the switch switch?
The switch is designed for very low switching currents, ideal for example for an LED with 11 mA at 12 V. The lower the current, the longer the service life: up to 1 trillion switching cycles at 5 V / 1 mA and 10 billion at 5 V / 10 mA.
How is the switching point defined?
The contact switches at a level height of approximately 4 cm.
How is the float switch mounted?
Vertically, inclined by a maximum of 30°. For vertical mounting the optional mounting bracket (article 300787) is recommended. Alternatively the float can be fixed through a suitable bushing on a pipe or holder.
Is the cable water-resistant?
According to the manufacturer the LIYY cable used is only briefly water-resistant. It is flame-retardant, self-extinguishing and resistant to many oils and coolants, but should be routed in a dry environment or in a protective conduit.
Is the float switch suitable for permanent moisture or use in liquids?
Yes. Float switches are designed for damp environments and use in liquids. The V2A stainless-steel model is corrosion-resistant and maintenance-free. Unlike sensors with open electrodes there is no risk of electrolysis.
Does the float switch also detect distilled water?
Yes. Because it is a mechanically actuated switching contact, the conductivity of the liquid is not decisive. The float works reliably in all media with a density of at least 0.7 g/cm³, including demineralised water or oil-containing liquids.
How long is the warranty?
The statutory warranty of at least 2 years in the EU applies. In addition the manufacturer Schabus offers a 5-year guarantee that can be registered online.
