The active water sensor with resistance output for digital inputs with pull-up or pull-down
The Schabus SHT 8815 is an active water sensor for external control units with the switching principle “unipolar resistance”. It is connected to the digital input of a controller that has an internal pull-up or pull-down resistor and thereby supplies the sensor with voltage.
When the sensor contacts are connected by water or a conductive liquid, the internal resistance of the sensor drops significantly, from several megaohms to a few hundred ohms. The level at the digital input is thereby pulled from HI to LO or from LO to HI. The controller thus detects water without additional relays or adapters.
The SHT 8815 is intended for regularly dry environments with only occasional water occurrences. It is not suitable for direct connection to Schabus water detectors.
Important note: The SHT 8815 is an active sensor and is not suitable for direct connection to Schabus water detectors (not for the classic Schabus water detectors SHT 5000/5001). Schabus water detectors are designed only for passive sensors with potential-free contacts. It is exclusively intended for connection to controllers with suitable digital inputs.
Detect water – by resistance change
On contact with water the resistance of the SHT 8815 drops significantly. Your digital input switches reliably.
Unipolar resistance
Dry several megaohms, wet a few hundred ohms. The resistance change is detected directly by the digital input.
For digital inputs
For digital inputs on PLCs and other controllers with internal pull-up or pull-down resistor.
High sensitivity
Thanks to active electronics the sensor also detects very weakly conductive water (except purest distilled water).
Two contacts
Two contacts made of nickel-plated brass in a compact design.
Impact-resistant, conditionally tread-resistant
Tough-elastic, corrosion-resistant potting in Wepuran® for high safety and durability.
For floor mounting
Screwable via the aluminium-reinforced mounting hole; mounting material is included.
Auxiliary power from the controller
The sensor requires auxiliary power, for example via the operating voltage of the controller or an internal pre-current.
Cable extendable up to 20 m
4 m LIYY control cable (2 × 0.14 mm²), extendable to a maximum of 20 m.
How the active sensor works
The SHT 8815 changes its internal resistance as soon as liquid connects both contacts.
- Dry: the resistance between the contacts is several megaohms
- Wet: the resistance drops to a few hundred ohms (example value)
- The level at the digital input is pulled from HI to LO or from LO to HI depending on the wiring
- The controller supplies the sensor with voltage via its digital input; an internal pull-up or pull-down resistor is a prerequisite
- The sensor detects conductive liquids, including those with very low conductivity
- When the contacts dry again, the resistance rises back to several megaohms
What is included in the box
The sensor is supplied with the material for mounting.
- SHT 8815 active water sensor
- Mounting material (1 screw, 1 wall plug)
- Operating instructions
How the SHT 8815 is constructed
The SHT 8815 is a compact, fully potted sensor with permanently connected supply cable.
Compact, potted housing
The plastic housing measures 34 × 12 × 10 mm and is hand-potted in Wepuran®. The active electronics are thereby protected. The degree of protection is IP 68; the operating temperature range is −15 °C to +50 °C.
Two contacts made of nickel-plated brass
The two contacts on the underside detect liquid contact directly. As soon as they are connected by a conductive liquid, the resistance drops.
Aluminium mounting hole
The integrated, aluminium-reinforced screw hole (Ø 3.2 mm) allows secure fastening. Screw and wall plug are included.
LIYY connecting cable (2-core)
The cable (2 × 0.14 mm², Ø 3.8 mm) is 4 m long. The cores: brown = digital input, positive (plus), white = ground / 0 V.
Mounting and connection
Read the operating instructions carefully before mounting and commissioning.
Mounting the sensor
- Securely screw the sensor with screw and wall plug through the integrated aluminium mounting hole.
- If the cable is too short it can be extended to a maximum of 20 m, e.g. with LIYY cable (article 300780).
Connecting the sensor
- Operate the sensor only with safety extra-low voltage (SELV/PELV).
- Connect the brown core to the digital input (positive, plus) of the controller and the white core to ground (0 V).
- Evaluate the signal: in the dry state the level remains unchanged; on water contact the level at the digital input is pulled from HI to LO or from LO to HI.
Important: In permanent moisture, electrolysis can lead to corrosion of the contacts. The sensor is therefore intended for regularly dry environments and only occasional water occurrences.
Which liquids does the sensor detect?
The SHT 8815 requires a conductive liquid, i.e. water with free ions.
- Detects conductive liquids such as tap water or salt water
- Also detects very weakly conductive water
- Purest distilled water is not detected
- The low level at the digital input (with 100 kΩ pull-up resistor) depends on the medium and is lower with salt water (2 %) than with tap water and distilled water

Frequently asked questions
Can I connect the SHT 8815 directly to a Schabus water detector?
No. The SHT 8815 is an active sensor and is therefore not compatible with Schabus water detectors, which are designed for passive sensors with potential-free contacts. It is exclusively intended for connection to controllers with suitable digital inputs.
How does the sensor work on water contact?
The sensor detects conductive liquids by a significant resistance change: dry the resistance is several megaohms, wet a few hundred ohms. This change is reliably detected by digital inputs with internal pull-up or pull-down resistor. The level at the digital input is thereby pulled from HI to LO or from LO to HI.
Does the sensor need its own power supply?
Yes. The SHT 8815 is an active sensor and requires auxiliary power, for example from the operating voltage of the connected controller or an internal pre-current. The power consumption is 4 mA according to the manufacturer. Without this energy the sensor does not work reliably.
How is the cable wired?
Brown = digital input, positive (plus), white = ground / 0 V.
Which controllers are suitable?
Any controller with a digital input that has an internal pull-up or pull-down resistor, for example PLC digital inputs, Loxone, WAGO, Beckhoff, Siemens LOGO!, KNX BMS or Home Assistant, openHAB and ioBroker (with pull-up).
Can the sensor be permanently installed in a damp environment?
Not recommended. The SHT 8815 is designed for regularly dry environments. In permanent moisture, electrolysis can lead to corrosion of the contacts. It is ideal for applications where water only needs to be detected occasionally.
Which liquids can the sensor detect?
Conductive liquids such as tap water or salt water. The sensor also detects very weakly conductive water; only purest distilled water is not detected.
How is the sensor mounted?
The sensor can be securely screwed; an integrated aluminium mounting hole is provided for this purpose. The matching mounting material (1 screw, 1 wall plug) is included in the scope of delivery.
Can I extend the connecting cable?
Yes. The sensor cable (2 × 0.14 mm²) can be extended by up to 20 metres, e.g. with LIYY cable (article 300780). This cable is briefly water-resistant, flame-retardant and self-extinguishing, oil- and coolant-resistant as well as low-adhesion (does not stick).
How long is the warranty?
The statutory warranty of at least 2 years in the EU applies. In addition the manufacturer Schabus offers a 5-year guarantee that can be registered online.
