The Handcrafted Mini Float Switch Made of PP Plastic with Reversible Switching Function (Normally Open/Normally Closed)
The Schabus SHT 5010 is a mini float switch made entirely of polypropylene (PP). The reed contact is soldered to the cable and potted liquid-tight with Wepuran®. The switching contact activates at a liquid level of approximately 4 cm and reliably monitors levels in tanks, cisterns, pump sumps and shafts.
The switching function is selectable: The SHT 5010 works as a normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) contact. By turning the float body 180°, you obtain the reverse contact function; only the E-ring at the end of the shaft needs to be released. Therefore, two separate variants are not required.
The float switch is suitable for all liquids with a density of at least 0.7 g/cm³, for example water, heating oil, diesel, vegetable oil or lubricating oils. It is an accessory for the Schabus water detectors SHT 5000, SHT 5001 and SHT 5002, e.g. for overflow detection, dry-run protection or level control.
Important note: Incorrect electrical connection can destroy the sensitive reed contacts and lead to malfunctions with personal injury or property damage. The SHT 5010 must not be operated directly on inductive or capacitive loads (e.g. relays, solenoid valves, PLC/PLS). The permissible switching capacity must not be exceeded.

How the SHT 5010 Is Constructed
The SHT 5010 consists of a float body on a shaft with thread, the reed contact potted in the shaft, and a permanently connected control cable.
Float Body
The float is made of PP (Ø 23 mm). Inside it is a ring magnet. As the liquid level rises, the float moves upward on the shaft (stroke 7.6 mm) and the reed contact is closed. Overall dimensions are L = 58 mm × Ø 23 mm.
Shaft with Thread, Nut, Rubber Ring and E-Ring
The shaft (Ø 8.3 mm) and the connection thread (M10x1) are made of PP. The float switch is mounted via thread, nut and rubber ring. The E-ring at the end of the shaft keeps the float on the shaft. When it is released, the float can be turned 180° and the switching function reversed. Secure vertical mounting is possible with the matching mounting bracket (Art. No. 300787).
Reed Contact (Normally Open)
A Meder reed contact is located in the shaft, soldered to the cable and potted liquid-tight with Wepuran®. In the supplied position the contact works as a normally open (NO) contact. Protection class is IP68.
LIYY Control Cable (2-core)
The cable (2 × 0.14 mm² LIYY) is 2.5 m long. It is only temporarily waterproof, flame-retardant, low-adhesion, self-extinguishing and largely resistant to oils, greases, coolants and lubricants.

Mounting the Float Switch
- Always operate the float switch vertically; the maximum permitted deviation from the vertical axis is 30°.
- For secure, vertical mounting on tank or shaft walls, the mounting bracket (Art. No. 300787) is suitable. It reliably prevents excessive inclination.
- Do not block the float; it must remain freely movable. When used in unprotected outdoor bodies of water, the dirt trap basket (Art. No. 300320) protects against leaves, dirt and small animals.
Selecting the Switching Function
- Release the E-ring at the end of the shaft.
- Turn the float body 180°. This gives you the reverse switching function (normally open or normally closed).
- Reattach the E-ring.
Connecting the Float Switch
- Connect the float switch to the water detector via the supplied 2.5 m LIYY cable.
- For extensions, use only thin, unshielded LIYY control cable (2 × 0.14 mm²). Total length max. 50 m per alarm line; when several sensors are connected in parallel, the individual cable lengths are added.
- Never run cables parallel to 230 V mains cables. Do not permanently expose the LIYY cable to water, as it is only temporarily waterproof.
- Do not exceed the permissible switching capacity (max. 10 W, 25 V AC / 60 V DC / 500 mA).
Protection for inductive loads: For inductive loads, the float switch must be protected by an RC circuit (AC voltage) or a freewheeling diode (DC voltage, e.g. 1N4007). Recommended RC circuit for reed contacts (10 … 40 VA): AC 24 V, 100 Ω, 0.33 µF, type A 3/24.

Thin, unshielded control cable sold by the meter for proper extensions up to max. 50 m total cable length per alarm line.

Yes, on request the manufacturer produces special lengths. In addition, the cable can be extended with LIYY control cable (Art. No. 300780) up to a maximum total length of 50 m.
Are the cables waterproof?
The LIYY cables used are only temporarily waterproof and not suitable for permanent water contact. The float switch itself is potted liquid-tight to protection class IP68.
Do I need to use a freewheeling diode with a third-party device?
Yes. If a third-party device with a coil (e.g. an external relay or contactor) is connected to the potential-free output, a freewheeling diode must be connected in parallel with the coil. When switching off, high voltage peaks (induction voltage) occur briefly that can damage the sensitive reed contacts. The diode dissipates these and ensures longevity and functional reliability.
Why must LIYY cables not be run parallel to 230 V mains cables?
Parallel routing can lead to interference, electromagnetic influences and, in the worst case, safety risks. Always use separate cable ducts or maintain sufficient distance.
What do I need to consider for the electrical connection?
Incorrect connection can destroy the sensitive reed contacts and lead to malfunctions. No direct connection to inductive loads (e.g. relays, solenoid valves), no direct connection to capacitive loads (e.g. PLC/PLS) or cable lengths over 50 m, and the permissible switching capacity must not be exceeded. For inductive loads, protection with an RC circuit or freewheeling diode is mandatory. If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician or our support.
How long is the warranty?
The statutory warranty of at least 2 years applies in the EU. In addition, the manufacturer Schabus offers a 5-year guarantee that can be registered online.
