The Schabus water detector SHT 240 is a plug-in warning device with a fork sensor for the early detection of escaping water. A burst hose, an overflowing sink or water ingress in the basement: as soon as the two metal contacts of the fork sensor come into contact with water, the SHT 240 triggers an acoustic and optical alarm. The alarm comes directly from the unit and is audible even through closed doors.

The SHT 240 is simply plugged into a 230 V socket; there are no batteries and therefore no empty batteries. It is particularly suitable for monitoring vulnerable areas, for example under washing machines and dishwashers, in kitchens, basements, utility rooms and boiler rooms. This allows leaks and the onset of water damage to be detected at an early stage.

Once the fork sensor is dry again, the alarm stops automatically and the function LED changes from red to green. Manual reset is not required. The detector has no options or variants.

How the SHT 240 is designed

The system consists of the socket-mounted unit and the permanently connected fork sensor.

Position the sensor correctly and put it into operation

Before installation and commissioning, carefully read the operating instructions. The fork sensor should be placed where escaping water is likely to collect first. The mounting position alone determines how early a water leak is detected.

The right position

Both metal contacts must rest on the floor and must not be covered by carpets, skirting boards or other objects. The contacts must not be permanently connected to each other in a conductive manner.

Commissioning step by step

1. Place the fork sensor at the desired location on the floor or fasten it flush on the wall. The connecting cable is permanently attached to the unit.
2. Plug the SHT 240 into a 230 V socket. Route the sensor cable so that it cannot be damaged and does not create a trip hazard.
3. The green LED and a short alarm tone indicate that the unit is ready for operation and is monitoring the sensor.

Extending the sensor cable

If the sensor is to be placed further from the unit, the cable can be extended up to 50 m. Use a suitable thin, unshielded cable such as LIYY 2 × 0.14 mm²; larger cross-sections can cause malfunctions. To do this, cut the existing cable and connect it with terminals. The sensor cable must not be laid parallel to 230 V mains cables. On request Schabus supplies pre-assembled special lengths; technical support will advise on this.

How the SHT 240 works

Function test, recommended monthly

Touch both sensor contacts with a cloth soaked in water. The alarm must be triggered immediately. Remove the cloth and allow the contacts to dry; the alarm then switches off again. The manufacturer recommends performing this test monthly for your own safety.

Behaviour in the event of an alarm

1. Immediately check the monitored area and eliminate the cause of the water leak.
2. If necessary, interrupt the water supply and take suitable measures to prevent further damage.
3. Do not touch electrical appliances, sockets or cables in the area of the escaped water as long as an electrical hazard cannot be ruled out. In case of doubt, switch off the power supply to the affected area.
4. Remove the water and dry the two contacts of the fork sensor completely.
5. Only put the water detector back into operation once the cause has been eliminated and the area is safe. After every alarm, check the function of the detector and sensor before resuming monitoring.

Troubleshooting

How to keep the SHT 240 reliable

The water detector is largely maintenance-free. The unit and fork sensor should be checked regularly for dirt and damage.

The unit must not be immersed in water or other liquids and must not be cleaned under running water. Check the function after cleaning and at least once a month.

Water, level or other liquids

The SHT 240 is suitable for detecting water or conductive liquids, for example escaping water at a washing machine, dishwasher, in the basement or in the utility room. For monitoring a defined liquid level, for example in pump shafts, cisterns, rainwater tanks or containers, as well as for non-conductive liquids such as heating oil or diesel, a float switch is required. For this purpose Schabus offers the SHT 241 (Art. No. 300241) with mini float switch, which monitors from a minimum level of 4 cm. For special media the manufacturer provides individual advice.

Warranty, guarantee, returns and disposal

The SHT 240 is covered by the statutory warranty of at least 2 years in the EU. The manufacturer Elektrotechnik Schabus additionally offers a 5-year guarantee that can be registered online. Repair and spare parts are available directly from the manufacturer, also beyond the statutory warranty. In the event of a warranty claim, a fault description, proof of purchase and complete contact and delivery details are required. Damage caused by improper use, modifications to the unit, external influences or unauthorised repairs is excluded.

Returns: First contact support and discuss the procedure, then pack the unit securely against breakage with adequate padding and enclose a note with the fault description, contact details and a copy of the proof of purchase. No unit should be sent without prior consultation; unpaid shipments cannot be accepted. Repairs and maintenance may only be carried out by the manufacturer or authorised specialist personnel.

The SHT 240 must not be disposed of with household waste. In accordance with Directive 2012/19/EU (WEEE) it must be collected separately at the end of its life, for example at a municipal collection point for electrical equipment (WEEE Reg. No. DE 91394868). Please also dispose of packaging material in an environmentally friendly manner.
