The Schabus water sensor SHT 5008 detects escaping conductive water on hard floors, for example on concrete, screed, stone or tiles. Its three nickel-plated brass contacts are potted in an impact-resistant, tough-elastic plastic housing. The potting with Wepuran is corrosion-stable and ensures high safety and longevity.
The SHT 5008 is an accessory for the Schabus water detectors and is supplied with a permanently connected 2-metre cable. It is fixed to the floor with the contacts facing downwards. As soon as conductive water reaches and bridges the contacts, the connected water detector evaluates this connection and triggers the configured reaction. The sensor itself operates passively and does not emit an acoustic alarm.
Thanks to the three-core design it offers more than a conventional floor sensor: on the water detector SHT 5001 it enables an AND/redundancy circuit according to its operating instructions. On all other connections it works as a particularly robust two-core floor sensor.
Important note: The SHT 5008 is intended for locations that are normally dry. It detects escaping water and is not a level sensor for permanently wet or flooded areas. It must not be connected directly to a supply voltage or an electrical load, but only to a suitable sensor input of a water detector.
Good to know: Evaluation and the desired reaction are performed by the connected water detector. The sensor only provides the information “contacts dry” or “contacts wetted”. Alarm, indication and subsequent function come from the water detector.
Water detected, damage averted

The LIYY cable is temporarily water-resistant, flame-retardant, low-adhesion and self-extinguishing, and largely resistant to oils, greases, coolants and lubricants (manufacturer’s specification).
How the SHT 5008 is constructed
Contacts, connection cable and housing form a potted unit. The device contains no parts that you need to service and must not be opened.
Impact-resistant plastic housing
The tough-elastic, round housing protects the potted contacts. It is compact and conditionally tread-resistant.
Top side (“Front”)
The top side faces upwards. Here you will find article number 300719 and the device identification.
Underside (“Back”) with three brass contacts
The three nickel-plated brass contacts are located on the underside. When installed they face downwards towards the floor and must not be covered. Conductive water that bridges at least two contacts is evaluated as water by the water detector.
Central opening for fixing
In the centre between the contacts is the opening for the screw with which the sensor is fixed to the floor.
Permanently connected three-core cable
The white LIYY cable is 2 m long and has three cores of 0.14 mm² each. It is potted into the side of the housing. For the two-pole standard connection any two wires are twisted together; for the AND/redundancy circuit on the SHT 5001 the three cores are used separately according to its connection diagram.
How the SHT 5008 detects water
The sensor operates passively. Evaluation is performed by the connected water detector.
Contacts dry
There is no conductive connection between the contacts. The water detector evaluates “no water”.
Contacts wetted
Conductive water bridges the contacts. The water detector evaluates “water detected” and triggers the configured reaction.
No own alarm
The sensor itself does not generate an acoustic warning signal. Alarm and indication come from the water detector.
Resistance measurement
The Schabus water detectors operate as impedance or resistance measuring devices and evaluate the connection between the contacts.
Two connection types for different tasks
The three-core cable of the SHT 5008 allows two connection types. The two must not be confused with each other.
Two-pole standard connection
The sensor inputs of the Schabus water detectors are always two-pole. For this, any two wires of the SHT 5008 are twisted together. The sensor then works as a particularly robust two-core floor sensor.
AND/redundancy circuit on the SHT 5001
The three contacts form two separate measuring paths. If the associated relay contacts are wired according to the operating instructions of the SHT 5001, the common load circuit only closes when both alarm lines have triggered.
The AND/redundancy circuit is not a dynamic measurement of the water level and does not automatically distinguish between standing and rising water. The connection terminals and the exact connection diagram can be found in the operating instructions of the respective water detector.
Correct placement, fixing and connection
Choose the mounting location so that escaping water can actually reach the contacts.
Floor mounting
- Check the mounting point. Take account of cables and seals in the substrate and choose a suitable fixing method.
- Select the location where escaping water is expected first, for example at a low point of the floor or near a possible leak.
- Mount the sensor with the contacts facing downwards. Seal the drill hole professionally if necessary.
- Do not cover the contacts. Water must be able to reach them unhindered.
- Route the cable safely: protected against crushing, tension and sharp edges, with connections that are secured against moisture.
- Do not run the cable parallel to 230 V mains cables.
Connection
- Identify the water detector. Check type and version; the connection terminals are given in its operating instructions.
- Select the connection type: two-pole with two twisted cores or three-core for the AND/redundancy circuit on the SHT 5001.
- Connect the sensor only to the designated sensor input.
- Carry out extensions and connections suitable for the respective environment and observe the device-specific requirements.
- Test the entire detection chain: water detection, indication, acoustic alarm and intended subsequent function.
Notes on the cable
- Use thin, unshielded cables, max. 2 × 0.14 mm² (LIYY)
- Up to 50 m of sensor cable per input is possible; the existing 2 m are included
- With the three-core special wiring all three required cores must be retained
- The cable is only temporarily water-resistant
- Do not run parallel to 230 V
- Additionally observe the requirements of the connected water detector
Commissioning
- Carry out a visual inspection: check fixing, cable and seal; contacts must be clean.
- Deliberately wet the contacts at the actual mounting location with water. The test must show that water really reaches the contacts.
- Observe the reaction: check the indication on the water detector and the intended subsequent function, for example a valve or a pump, under controlled conditions.
- Restore the normal condition: dry contacts and floor, check reset and any required acknowledgement on the water detector.
Manufacturer’s notes
- Read the instructions for the sensor and the instructions for the connected water detector and keep both
- Work on mains voltage may only be carried out by qualified electricians; isolate and verify absence of voltage beforehand
- Never connect low-voltage models to mains voltage
- Do not connect passive water sensors directly to a supply voltage or an electrical load
- Use only in environments that are normally dry
- Do not continue to use damaged cables or housings
- Do not open potted components
- Keep packaging material away from children
- Always carry out a full functional test after installation, connection or modification
- Repairs and maintenance may only be carried out by the manufacturer or authorised specialist personnel
What the SHT 5008 does not do
- The sensor only detects water at the contacts that it reaches. For larger areas further sensors are advisable
- It is not a level sensor. For continuous monitoring of a liquid level use a suitable float switch
- It must not lie permanently in water; the connection cable is only temporarily water-resistant
- It has no own alarm; warning and subsequent function are performed by the water detector
- It detects conductive water. For soft floor coverings such as carpet or parquet the SHT 5009 is intended
- Specifications for float switches do not automatically apply to electrode sensors
Clean, check, find faults
Cleaning and re-checking
- Clean with a soft, damp cloth
- Do not use solvent-based agents
- Remove deposits and dry contacts and mounting surface
- Repeat the functional test after cleaning, changes to the mounting or connection work
Troubleshooting
No reaction?
Check that model, connection and sensor input are correct and that the contacts are actually being wetted.
Indication remains?
Check for residual water or deposits on the contacts or whether the indication on the water detector still needs to be acknowledged.
Unexpected indication?
Check connections for moisture, the cable routing and the selected connection type.
If the fault persists, put the system into a safe state and contact Schabus Support.
In the event of a service case
- Get in touch and describe the fault as precisely as possible: what happened, when does it occur and what indication does the device show?
- The manufacturer will review your enquiry and advise the next steps. Many questions can be clarified by telephone or e-mail.
- After consultation, prepare the return: pack breakage-proof, enclose a fault description, contact details and a copy of the purchase receipt.
The manufacturer cannot accept unstamped consignments. Support is available Monday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Warranty, guarantee and disposal
The SHT 5008 is covered by the statutory warranty of at least 2 years in the EU. The manufacturer Elektrotechnik Schabus additionally offers a 5-year guarantee that can be registered online. Repair and spare parts are available directly from the manufacturer, even beyond the statutory warranty.
The device bears the CE marking. The full EU declaration of conformity can be requested from the manufacturer or downloaded from the website.
The SHT 5008 does not belong in household waste. In accordance with Directive 2012/19/EU (WEEE) the device must be collected separately at the end of its service life and sent for environmentally sound recycling, for example via a municipal collection point for electrical equipment (WEEE Reg. May the sensor lie permanently in water?

How do I test and clean the sensor?
Wet the contacts at the actual mounting location and check the reaction of the water detector as well as the intended subsequent function. What to do if the sensor does not react or the indication remains?
If there is no reaction, check that model, connection and sensor input are correct and that the contacts are really being wetted. If the indication remains, check for residual water, deposits and acknowledgement on the water detector. In the event of unexpected indications, check moist connections and the cable routing. If the fault persists, put the system into a safe state and contact Schabus Support.
Are there options or additional variants?
No. The SHT 5008 has no options. With cable and mounting material it is complete.
How long is the warranty?
The statutory warranty of at least 2 years applies in the EU. In addition, the manufacturer Schabus offers a 5-year guarantee that can be registered online.
