The Schabus floor water sensor SHT 5090 detects escaping conductive water at the installation location, completely without drilling, screwing or gluing. Thanks to its high dead weight, the sensor stays securely on the surface. It is laid on the floor surface or stood upright against a wall. No mounting is required.
This makes the SHT 5090 ideal where drilling is not possible or not desired, for example in listed buildings or rental properties, on sensitive floors such as tiles and design coverings, in hard-to-reach areas and for temporary installations. Its three ball contacts are made of V2A stainless steel. As soon as water creates a sufficiently conductive connection between the sensor contacts, the connected water detector triggers the configured reaction.
The SHT 5090 is an accessory for the Schabus water detectors SHT 5000, SHT 5001 and SHT 5002 and is supplied with a permanently connected 2.5-metre LIYY cable. The sensor itself operates passively and does not emit its own alarm.
Important note: The SHT 5090 is intended for locations that are normally dry. It is not suitable for permanently flooded or constantly damp environments. The IP67 degree of protection is not approval for permanent underwater use. It must not be connected directly to a supply voltage or an electrical load, but only to a suitable sensor input of a water detector.
Good to know: Evaluation and the desired reaction are performed by the connected water detector. The sensor only provides the information “contacts dry” or “contacts wetted”. Water detection must be checked after placement at the actual point of use.
Installation without drilling, protection without effort
The SHT 5090 combines a heavy, stable housing with three ball contacts made of stainless steel and a cable that fits directly to the Schabus water detectors.
No drilling, no gluing
The sensor is simply placed or laid on a non-conductive monitoring surface. No mounting is required.

The dead weight ensures a secure stand. The sensor can lie flat or stand upright against a wall.

The sensor body is made of impact-resistant, tough-elastic plastic. The degree of protection is IP67.
Two-core cable
The two-core LIYY cable fits directly to the two-pole sensor input of the Schabus water detectors.
2.5 metres, extendable
The cable is permanently connected and can be extended to a total length of up to 50 m. Special lengths are available on request.

How the SHT 5090 is constructed
Contacts, connection cable and housing form a potted unit. The device contains no parts that you need to service and must not be opened.
Heavy, compact sensor body
The round body is made of impact-resistant, tough-elastic plastic. Together with the stainless steel balls, this results in a high dead weight that keeps the sensor securely on the surface without fixing.
Labelled top side
On the top side you will find the type designation SHT 5090, article number 300721 and the device identifications.
Three ball contacts made of V2A stainless steel
The three balls are arranged around the housing. They are the measuring contacts and at the same time the support points. Due to the arrangement, at least two balls always have floor contact, even when lying at an angle, leaning against a wall or standing behind furniture.
Permanently connected two-core cable
The LIYY cable is 2.5 m long, permanently potted and has two cores (brown and white) of 0.14 mm² each. It is connected to the designated sensor input of the water detector. Route it so that it does not shift or pull the sensor away.
How the SHT 5090 detects water
The sensor operates passively. Evaluation is performed by the connected water detector.
Contacts dry
There is no conductive connection between the balls. The water detector evaluates “no water”.
Contacts wetted
Conductive water bridges the balls. The water detector evaluates “water detected” and triggers the configured reaction.
No own alarm
The sensor itself does not generate an acoustic warning signal. Alarm and indication come from the water detector.
Which water is detected?
For typical household drinking, process, rain, machine and grey water, the conductivity is fully sufficient. Very pure or distilled water as well as condensate may not be detected reliably.
Place, connect, test
Ensure that the contacts can reach the escaping water.
Placement
- Select the location where escaping water is expected first, for example under a washing machine, a sink, a radiator or a heating system.
- Place or lay the sensor with the ball contacts facing downwards on a non-conductive monitoring surface.
- Ensure a secure stand. The sensor can also be stood upright against a wall; what matters is that it stands securely and that water reaches the contacts.
- Route the cable so that it does not shift or pull the sensor away.
- Do not run the cable parallel to 230 V mains cables and protect it against crushing, tension and sharp edges.
Connection
- Identify the water detector (SHT 5000, SHT 5001 or SHT 5002). The connection terminals are given in its operating instructions.
- Connect the two-core cable to the designated sensor input.
- Carry out extensions and connections suitable for the respective environment and observe the device-specific requirements.
- Test the entire detection chain: water detection, indication, acoustic alarm and intended subsequent function.
Notes on the cable
- Use thin, unshielded LIYY cable, max. 2 × 0.14 mm²
- Up to 50 m of sensor cable is possible; the existing 2.5 m are included
- In the case of parallel connection the individual cable lengths are added together
- The cable is only temporarily water-resistant
- Do not run parallel to 230 V
- Additionally observe the requirements of the connected water detector
Commissioning
- Check stand, cable and contacts by visual inspection.
- Deliberately wet the sensor contacts in the chosen position with water. The test must show that water actually reaches the contacts.
- Observe the reaction: indication on the water detector and intended subsequent function.
- Then dry contacts and floor. Check the return to the normal condition and any required acknowledgement on the water detector.
Manufacturer’s notes
- Read the instructions for the sensor and the instructions for the connected water detector and keep both
- Work on mains voltage may only be carried out by qualified electricians; isolate and verify absence of voltage beforehand
- Never connect low-voltage models to mains voltage
- Do not connect passive water sensors directly to a supply voltage or an electrical load
- Use only on a non-conductive surface and in locations that are normally dry
- Do not continue to use damaged cables or housings
- Do not open potted components
- Keep packaging material away from children
- Always carry out a full functional test after placement, connection or modification
- Repairs and maintenance may only be carried out by the manufacturer or authorised specialist personnel
What the SHT 5090 does not do
- The sensor only detects water at the ball contacts that it reaches. For larger areas further sensors are advisable
- It is not a level sensor. For level applications the manufacturer recommends mini float switches
- It must not lie permanently under water. The IP67 degree of protection is not approval for permanent underwater use and the cable is only temporarily water-resistant
- It has no own alarm; warning and subsequent function are performed by the water detector
- Very pure or distilled water and condensate may not be detected reliably; check suitability with the water actually to be monitored
- Specifications for float switches do not automatically apply to electrode sensors
Clean, check, find faults
Cleaning and re-checking
- Clean with a soft, damp cloth
- Do not use solvent-based agents
- Remove deposits from the contacts and then dry the sensor
- Repeat the functional test after cleaning or a change of placement
Troubleshooting
No reaction?
Check that model, connection and sensor input are correct and that the contacts are actually being wetted.
Indication remains?
Check for residual water or deposits on the contacts or whether the indication on the water detector still needs to be acknowledged.
Unexpected indication?
Check connections for moisture and the cable routing.
If the fault persists, put the system into a safe state and contact Schabus Support.
In the event of a service case
- Get in touch and describe the fault as precisely as possible: what happened, when does it occur and what indication does the device show?
- The manufacturer will review your enquiry and advise the next steps. Many questions can be clarified by telephone or e-mail.
- After consultation, prepare the return: pack breakage-proof, enclose a fault description, contact details and a copy of the purchase receipt.
The manufacturer cannot accept unstamped consignments.
Warranty, guarantee and disposal
The SHT 5090 is covered by the statutory warranty of at least 2 years in the EU. The manufacturer Elektrotechnik Schabus additionally offers a 5-year guarantee that can be registered online. Repair and spare parts are available directly from the manufacturer, even beyond the statutory warranty.
The device bears the CE marking. The full EU declaration of conformity can be requested from the manufacturer or downloaded from the website.
The SHT 5090 does not belong in household waste. In accordance with Directive 2012/19/EU (WEEE) the device must be collected separately at the end of its service life and sent for environmentally sound recycling, for example via a municipal collection point for electrical equipment (WEEE Reg. May the sensor lie permanently under water?
No. The SHT 5090 is intended for leak detection at locations that are normally dry. The IP67 degree of protection does not mean approval for permanent underwater use. The LIYY connection cable is also only temporarily water-resistant. For continuous level monitoring use a suitable float switch.
Does the sensor detect every type of water?
