The Compact Water Sensor for Floors, Edges and Corners: Two Nickel-Plated Brass Contacts, Hand-Potted, for Schabus Water Alarms
The Schabus water sensor SHT 5800 detects conductive water at possible leak points. Its compact design allows installation even in narrow places, for example at wall-floor transitions, in corners or along edges – precisely where larger sensors do not fit.
As soon as water creates a sufficiently conductive connection between the two contacts, the connected Schabus water alarm detects the water and triggers an alarm according to its settings. The sensor itself operates passively and has no acoustic alarm generator.
The SHT 5800 is an accessory for the Schabus water alarms SHT 5000, SHT 5001 and SHT 5002 and is supplied with a permanently potted 2 m long LIYY cable. The impact-resistant, tough-elastic plastic housing is intended for normally dry areas where escaping water is to be detected at an early stage.
Important note: The SHT 5800 is intended for normally dry areas with occasional moisture. It is not suitable for permanently flooded or constantly wet environments. It may only be connected to a suitable sensor input of a water alarm, never directly to a supply voltage or an electrical load.
Good to know: The sensor only provides the water alarm with the information “contacts dry” or “contacts wetted”. Evaluation, alarm and follow-up function are handled by the water alarm. A single wetted contact surface is not sufficient for detection; water must reach both contacts.

The sensor is hand-potted with Wepuran plastic for safety and durability.
Two-Core LIYY Cable
The 2 m long white cable fits directly to the two-pole sensor input of the Schabus water alarms.
Extendable up to 50 m
The entire sensor cable may be up to 50 m long. Special lengths are available on request.
Mounting Material Included
One screw and one wall plug are included. The sensor is secured at the designated mounting hole.

How the SHT 5800 Is Constructed
Housing, contacts and connection cable form a potted unit. The device contains no parts that you need to maintain and must not be opened.
Compact Plastic Housing
The flat, elongated housing is made of impact-resistant, tough-elastic plastic. It is hand-potted with Wepuran plastic and is therefore corrosion-resistant, mechanically robust and durable.
Labelled Top Side
On the top side are the type designation SHT 5800, the article number 300758 and the device markings. The mounting hole is located in the centre.
Bottom Side with Two Brass Contacts
On the bottom side are the two nickel-plated brass contacts. They are the measuring points and must face the expected water path. The mounting hole is located between the contacts.
Permanently Potted Connection Cable with Two Cores
The white LIYY cable is 2 m long and has two cores (brown and white) of 0.14 mm² each. It is connected to the designated sensor input of the water alarm. Route it without tensile stress and without sharp bends.
How the SHT 5800 Detects Water
The sensor operates passively. Evaluation is performed by the connected water alarm.
Contacts Dry
There is no conductive connection between the contacts. The water alarm evaluates “no water”.
Contacts Wetted
Conductive water connects both contacts. The water alarm evaluates “water detected” and triggers the set response.
No Own Alarm
The sensor itself does not generate an acoustic warning signal. Alarm and display come from the water alarm.
Which Water Is Detected?
The electrical conductivity of the liquid is decisive. Very pure water or condensation may have too low conductivity. Check the function under the actual operating conditions.
Position, Connect, Test
Take the actual water path into account. Edges, seals or other obstacles must not shield the contacts from the water.
Mount at the Possible Leak Point
- Choose a place where water collects or runs along, for example at a wall-floor transition, in a corner or at an edge.
- Orient the contact side so that the two contacts face the expected water path. Do not place them behind an edge or seal.
- Secure the sensor at the designated mounting hole, for example with the enclosed mounting material (screw and wall plug).
- Route the cable without tensile stress and without sharp bends. Do not run it parallel to 230 V mains cables and protect connection points from moisture.
Connection
- Identify the water alarm (SHT 5000, SHT 5001 or SHT 5002). The connection terminals are described in its operating instructions.
- Connect the two-core cable to the designated sensor input.
- Carry out extensions and connections suitable for the respective environment and observe the requirements of the water alarm.
- Check the entire alarm chain: water detection, display, acoustic alarm and the intended follow-up function.
Notes on the Cable
- Use unshielded LIYY cable, max. 2 × 0.14 mm² (for example the manufacturer’s LIYY cable, article 300780)
- The entire sensor cable may be up to 50 m long; the existing 2 m are included
- Do not run parallel to 230 V cables
- The cable is only briefly waterproof
- According to the manufacturer, LIYY cable is flame-retardant, low-adhesion, self-extinguishing and largely resistant to oils, greases, coolants and lubricants
- Additionally observe the requirements of the connected water alarm
Commissioning
- Visually check the fixing, cable and contacts.
- Deliberately wet both contacts with water. The test must show that water actually reaches the contacts at the chosen mounting location.
- Observe the response: indication on the water alarm and the intended follow-up function.
- Then dry the sensor. Check the return to the normal state and, if necessary, the required acknowledgement on the water alarm.
Manufacturer’s Notes
- Read the instructions for the sensor and the instructions for the connected water alarm and keep both
- Work on mains voltage may only be carried out by qualified electricians; isolate and verify absence of voltage beforehand
- Never connect low-voltage models to mains voltage
- Do not connect passive water sensors directly to a supply voltage or an electrical load
- Use only in normally dry locations
- Do not continue to use damaged cables or housings
- Do not open potted components
- Keep packaging material away from children
- Always perform a full functional test after installation, connection or modification
- Repairs and maintenance may only be carried out by the manufacturer or authorised specialist personnel
What the SHT 5800 Does Not Do
- It detects water only at the two contacts. For larger areas further sensors are useful
- It is not a level sensor. For level applications the manufacturer recommends mini float switches
- It is not intended for permanently wet or flooded areas. The connection cable is only briefly waterproof
- It has no own alarm; warning and follow-up function are handled by the water alarm
- Very pure water and condensation may not be reliably detected
- A single wetted contact surface is not sufficient for detection
- Specifications for float switches do not automatically apply to electrode sensors

- Do not use solvent-containing cleaners
- Then dry the contacts
- Repeat the functional test after cleaning or changing the mounting
Troubleshooting
No Response?
Check whether the model, connection and sensor input are correct and whether both contacts are actually being wetted.
Indication Remains?
Check whether residual water or deposits are present on the contacts or whether the indication on the water alarm still needs to be acknowledged.
Unexpected Indication?
Check connections for moisture and the cable routing.
If the fault persists, put the system into a safe state and contact Schabus Support.

- Get in touch and describe the fault as precisely as possible: What happened, when does it occur and what indication does the device show?
- The manufacturer examines your enquiry and states the next steps. Many questions can be clarified by telephone or e-mail.
- After consultation, prepare the return: pack shatter-proof, enclose a fault description, contact details and a copy of the proof of purchase.
The manufacturer cannot accept unfree shipments.
Warranty, Guarantee and Disposal
The SHT 5800 is covered by the statutory warranty of at least 2 years in the EU. The manufacturer Elektrotechnik Schabus additionally offers a 5-year guarantee that can be registered online. Repair and spare parts are available directly from the manufacturer, even beyond the statutory warranty.
The device bears the CE marking. The complete EU declaration of conformity can be requested from the manufacturer or downloaded from the website.
The SHT 5800 does not belong in household waste. In accordance with Directive 2012/19/EU (WEEE), the device must be collected separately at the end of its service life and sent for environmentally sound recycling, for example via a municipal collection point for electrical equipment (WEEE Reg.
