The compact access control terminal with door controller and card reader in one device
The Akuvox AV-A08K is a slim access control terminal that combines a door controller and card reader in a single, very compact housing. This eliminates the need for building operators to purchase a separate controller and reader, reducing installation effort and costs. Flexible recognition methods are available for access release: PIN code via the illuminated touch keypad, card at the integrated multi-frequency card reader, and mobile access via NFC. The device comes from the same series as the A08 model, which was awarded the iF Design Award 2025, and was developed under the guiding principle of “minimum installation space, maximum access performance”.
Flexible mounting: The AV-A08K can be mounted either flush (recessed into the wall) or surface-mounted. Connection is via Ethernet (RJ45, 10/100 Mbps) with Power over Ethernet according to 802.3af; alternatively via an external 12 V DC connection with 600 mA output power if PoE is not available.
Thanks to support for Wiegand and the open OSDP protocol, the AV-A08K can be operated either as a standalone door controller or integrated as a pure card reader into existing access systems.
Door controller, card reader and keypad in one device
The AV-A08K combines all the essential functions of a professional access terminal in a compact, robust housing.
Illuminated touch keypad
Capacitive numeric keypad for direct PIN code entry on the device.
Multi-frequency card reader
Integrated reader for 13.56 MHz and 125 kHz RFID cards in one device.
Mobile access via NFC
Door opening directly via smartphone at the integrated reader (Android only).
Ethernet, PoE & 12V DC
Operation via Power over Ethernet or alternatively via external 12 V DC supply.
Aluminium frame with tempered glass
Robust front made of tempered glass in an aluminium frame.
Wiegand & OSDP
Open protocols for integration into existing access infrastructures.
How the AV-A08K is built
The slim housing of the AV-A08K is deliberately kept compact so that the terminal can also be installed on narrow door frames or in tight wall recesses.
Front panel made of tempered glass
The front consists of tempered glass (Toughened Glass), framed in an aluminium frame, which gives the device additional mechanical stability for continuous use.
Round status indicator
At the upper end of the housing sits a round, illuminated status indicator that signals the current state of the terminal.
Touch keypad with additional keys
Below this is the capacitive numeric keypad (0–9) with an additional delete and a confirmation key for entering PIN codes.
Card reader behind the tempered glass
The multi-frequency card reader for 13.56 MHz and 125 kHz cards is located concealed behind the glass front in the lower area of the housing.
Rear connections
On the rear are the Ethernet connection with PoE (alternatively 12 V DC connection), a relay output, two inputs as well as a selectable Wiegand port (input/output) and an RS485 interface for OSDP or external access components. A small speaker (8 Ω / 0.5 W) provides acoustic feedback during operation.
Mounting type and tamper protection
The housing can be mounted either flush or surface-mounted and is equipped with a tamper alarm against forced dismantling.
Flexible ways to grant access
Depending on the application, the AV-A08K can be used in different ways for access release.
- Entry of a personal PIN code on the touch keypad
- Holding a 13.56 MHz or 125 kHz card to the integrated reader
- Mobile access via NFC directly from the smartphone (Android only)
- Central release and management via ACMS, SDMC or the Akuvox Cloud
Practical example: An employee in a shared office has forgotten their access card. Since their profile in the access management system is also linked to a PIN code, they simply enter it on the touch keypad of the AV-A08K and enter the building without a replacement card having to be issued.
More than just door opening
Beyond pure access release, the AV-A08K includes functions that are typically required in professional access management.
- Time-controlled access schedules (Access Schedule)
- Management of different access authorization levels
- Switchable to pure card reader mode for external controllers
- Logging of all door access events
- Flexible shift planning and time & attendance (Attendance Management)
Integration into existing systems
The AV-A08K is designed as an open access terminal and can be integrated both as a standalone unit and into larger access infrastructures.
Wiegand
Classic connection of external access readers or controllers.
OSDP
Open, encrypted protocol for secure connection to modern access controllers.
RS485
Serial interface for connecting further access components.
ACMS / SDMC / Cloud
Central management of multiple terminals via the Akuvox management platforms or the Akuvox Cloud.
On the network side, the AV-A08K supports among other things IPv4, HTTP(S), FTP, DNS, NTP, TCP, UDP, ICMP, DHCP and ARP.
Also designed for many users as a standalone unit
The AV-A08K can also manage access data locally on the device entirely without central management software.
Up to 20,000 users
Local user management directly on the device, even without ACMS/SDMC.
Up to 100,000 cards
Very large capacity, also suitable for sites with many access rights holders.
Up to 20,000 PIN codes
Individual PIN codes for door opening directly on the touch keypad.
Up to 100,000 access logs
Extensive local event log for the traceability of access events.
According to the manufacturer, integrated NFC access via smartphone only works with Android devices. For iPhone users, PIN code and card remain available as access methods.
Maintenance and operation from a distance
For professional operation and remote maintenance, the AV-A08K includes several administrative functions.
- Auto-provisioning for automated initial setup
- Management via a web-based management portal
- Web-based packet dump for network diagnostics
- Backup and restore of the configuration
- Firmware updates via the web interface
- Central management via the Akuvox Cloud
- Central management via Akuvox SDMC and ACMS
Robustly built for continuous outdoor use
As an access terminal, the AV-A08K is exposed to direct weather and potential sabotage – the design is accordingly geared towards continuous operation.
- Aluminium frame with tempered glass front panel
- IP65 protection against dust and water jets
- Impact resistance according to IK09 for additional vandalism protection
