In modern industrial and building technology, precise control, monitoring and data transmission are crucial for optimizing processes and ensuring operational safety. The Web-IO 4.0 Digital, 12x In, 12x Out, 1x RS232 by Wiesemann & Theis combines the functionality of a Web-IO with a serial Com server. It enables control and monitoring of 12 digital inputs and 12 digital outputs via TCP/IP Ethernet as well as the transmission of serial RS232 data streams. With an intuitive web interface, comprehensive network services and protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT and REST, it is ideally suited for Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT) as well as machine data acquisition (MDE) and DNC applications. This article highlights the technical features, applications and advantages of this versatile device.

Precise Control, Monitoring and Serial Data Transmission

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital, 12x In, 12x Out, 1x RS232 features 12 switching inputs in 24V technology, equipped with integrated 32-bit pulse counters for precise detection of events such as switching operations or pulses. The 12 switching outputs are digital outputs in 24V technology, capable of sourcing up to 500 mA and are short-circuit proof. Voltages of 12 V, 48 V, 110 V or 230 V can be switched via coupling relays. In addition, the device provides an RS232 interface (DB9 connector with DTE pinout, up to 230,000 baud) that transmits serial data streams over the network. This combination makes the device ideal for complex applications such as process monitoring, machine data acquisition (MDE), fault signal detection and DNC (Distributed Numerical Control) applications.

Intuitive Operation and Network Integration

The operation of the Web-IO 4.0 Digital is extremely user-friendly thanks to an intuitive web interface, switchable between German and English. Users can directly control the switching outputs via the web interface, monitor the status of the switching inputs in real time and manage serial data. The interface is optimized for smartphones, enabling control on the go. The support of HTTP and HTTPS ensures secure communication. Developers can access the current IO states directly via HTTP requests, AJAX or JavaScript to integrate the device into other websites or applications. The box-to-box function allows switching signals to be forwarded 1:1 over the network, facilitating cross-location control. These connectivity options make the device ideal for network control in connected environments.

Flexible Alarm and Notification Functions

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital offers comprehensive alarm and status reporting capabilities. Up to 30 actions can be configured, triggered automatically by changes to the inputs or outputs. These include email notifications, SNMP alarms (SNMP traps V1, V2, V3), switching its own outputs, controlling another Web-IO’s outputs, or HTTP requests for controlling third-party devices. These functions are especially beneficial in critical applications such as remote monitoring or fault detection, where quick response to events is required. The ability to send status notifications via email supports the documentation and analysis of switching operations, which is crucial for audits and quality management.

Seamless Integration into Industry 4.0 and IoT

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital is well-prepared for the requirements of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things. It supports modern protocols such as OPC UA, REST and MQTT, allowing easy integration into automation systems and IoT platforms. AMQP is also supported upon request. Additional interfaces like SNMP V1, V2c, V3, Modbus TCP, OPC DA, Syslog and Sensobase (database integration via ODBC) allow connection to existing systems and databases. Developers can access IO states or serial data directly via TCP and UDP sockets (client and server) to develop custom solutions. FTP support allows logging of switching signals and serial data, enhancing traceability of processes. These connectivity options make the device a future-proof solution for building automation, home automation, MDE and DNC applications.

Data Storage and Time Management

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital includes an integrated data logger that stores switching operations, status changes and serial data. Storage duration ranges from at least 7 weeks to a maximum of 20 years, depending on the selected storage frequency (15 seconds to 1 hour). Data can be exported in various formats such as FTP, Excel files or email attachments, facilitating further processing. An internal battery-buffered clock ensures accurate timestamps, which can be optimized through synchronization with a time server. These functions ensure reliable documentation and analysis of switching operations and serial data, especially beneficial in process monitoring and machine data acquisition.

Versatile Applications

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital, 12x In, 12x Out, 1x RS232 is designed for a wide range of applications. In remote monitoring and fault detection, it monitors switching inputs and reports status changes to detect and resolve operational issues. In building automation, it controls devices such as lighting, gates or barriers and enables cross-location switching. In home automation, it supports the automation of lighting or heating systems to increase comfort and energy efficiency. In industrial environments, the device is suitable for process monitoring and visualization as well as machine data acquisition (MDE) to optimize production processes. The RS232 interface allows integration into DNC applications, where serial data is transmitted from machines or controllers. The pulse counters on the inputs support the detection of events such as production cycles or flow rates. Additional use cases include the control of barriers or access systems.

Flexible Power Supply and Compliance

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital is powered by an external supply (12–24 V DC) via a screw terminal connection. This flexibility enables use in various environments. The device complies with standards for office and industrial environments and offers high interference immunity in accordance with EN 61000-6-2 as well as low emission according to EN 55032:2015 + A1 Class B, EN 61000-3-2 and EN 61000-3-3. These features ensure reliable and interference-free operation, even in demanding environments.
