Flexible Control and Monitoring with the Web-IO 4.0 Digital, 4x In/Out from Wiesemann & Theis

In modern industry and building automation, control and monitoring of switching signals are essential for optimizing processes and ensuring operational safety. The Web-IO 4.0 Digital, 4x In/Out from Wiesemann & Theis is a versatile, network-enabled device offering four switching channels that can be configured as digital inputs or outputs with 24V technology. With an intuitive web interface, comprehensive network services, and support for protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, and REST, the device is ideally suited for Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT). This article highlights the technical features, applications, and benefits of this flexible device developed for remote monitoring, building automation, and home automation.

Flexible Switching Channels for Versatile Applications

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital, 4x In/Out features four switching channels that can be configured either as inputs or outputs. This flexibility allows the device to be tailored to specific needs, whether for signal acquisition or control of devices. The channels operate with 24V technology, with outputs supplying currents up to 500 mA and are short-circuit protected. Coupling relays allow switching of voltages like 12 V, 48 V, 110 V, or 230 V. Each channel configured as an input is equipped with an integrated 32-bit pulse counter for accurately recording events such as switching operations or pulses. These features make the device ideal for applications like process monitoring, machine data acquisition (MDA), and fault message detection, where both control and monitoring are required.

Intuitive Operation and Network Connectivity

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital is extremely user-friendly thanks to its intuitive web interface, which can be switched between German and English. Users can control output-configured channels directly via the web interface and monitor the status of input-configured channels in real time. The interface is optimized for smartphones, enabling mobile access. Support for HTTP and HTTPS ensures secure communication. Developers can access current I/O statuses directly via HTTP requests, AJAX, or JavaScript to integrate the device into other websites or applications. The box-to-box function enables 1:1 forwarding of switching signals over the network, simplifying remote control across locations. These connectivity options make the device ideal for network-based control in connected environments.

Flexible Alarm and Notification Features

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital offers comprehensive alarm and message options. Up to 30 actions can be configured to trigger automatically upon changes to inputs or outputs. These include email notifications, SNMP traps (V1, V2, V3), switching of its own outputs, activation of outputs on another Web-IO, or HTTP requests to control third-party devices. These features are particularly valuable in critical applications such as remote monitoring or fault detection, where rapid response is required. The ability to send status messages via email supports the documentation and analysis of switching events, which is crucial for audits and quality management.

Seamless Integration into Industry 4.0 and IoT

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital is perfectly equipped to meet the requirements of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things. It supports modern protocols like OPC UA, REST, and MQTT, allowing simple integration into automation systems and IoT platforms. AMQP is also available upon request. Additional interfaces such as SNMP V1, V2c, V3, Modbus TCP, OPC DA, Syslog, and Sensobase (ODBC database integration) enable connection with existing systems and databases. Developers can access I/O states directly via TCP and UDP sockets (client and server) to create custom solutions. Support for FTP allows logging of switching signals, increasing process traceability. These connectivity features make the device a future-proof solution for building automation, home automation, and industrial applications.

Data Logging and Time Management

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital includes an integrated data logger that stores switching events and status changes. The storage duration ranges from at least 7 weeks to up to 20 years, depending on the selected logging frequency (15 seconds to 1 hour). Data can be exported in various formats such as FTP, Excel files, or email attachments, facilitating further processing. An internal battery-buffered clock ensures precise timestamps, which can be optimized through synchronization with a time server. These features guarantee reliable documentation and analysis of switching activities, especially beneficial in process monitoring and machine data acquisition.

Wide Range of Applications

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital, 4x In/Out is designed for a wide range of applications. In remote monitoring and fault detection, it monitors input signals to detect and report operational anomalies. In building automation, it controls devices such as lighting, gates, or barriers and enables remote switching operations. In home automation, it supports automation of lighting or heating systems to increase comfort and energy efficiency. In industrial environments, the device is suited for process monitoring and visualization as well as machine data acquisition (MDA) to optimize production processes. The pulse counters on the inputs enable recording of events such as production cycles or flow volumes. Additional use cases include control of barriers or access systems.

Flexible Power Supply and Standards Compliance

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital is powered via an external power supply (12–24 V DC) using screw terminal connections. This flexibility makes the device suitable for use in various environments. It complies with standards for office and industrial use, offering high immunity according to EN 61000-6-2 and low emissions according to EN 55032:2015 + A1 Class B, EN 61000-3-2, and EN 61000-3-3. These features ensure reliable and interference-free operation, even in demanding environments.

Please note: A power supply is not included in the delivery.

Durability and Reliability

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital is designed for continuous operation and comes with a five-year warranty. Its robust construction and optional DIN rail mounting make it ideal for industrial environments. The internal, battery-buffered clock ensures accurate timekeeping, which is further optimized through synchronization with a time server. These features demonstrate the device's durability and reliability, even under demanding conditions.
