Com-Server LC

Serial Network Connection with the Com-Server LC from Wiesemann & Theis

The Com-Server LC from Wiesemann & Theis is a compact and universal solution for industrial-grade integration of a serial device via TCP/IP Ethernet into networks. With network services such as virtual COM ports, box-to-box connections, and TCP socket communication, the device offers versatile communication options for industrial applications. Thanks to plug & play commissioning via WuTility, support for Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), optional TLS encryption, and a robust design for DIN rail mounting, the Com-Server LC is ideal for Industry 4.0, automation technology, and network environments requiring reliability and flexibility. This article highlights the technical features, applications, and benefits of this efficient solution for serial network connection.

Transparent Serial Communication over the Network

The Com-Server LC enables seamless integration of a serial device with a switchable RS232, RS422, or RS485 interface into modern network environments. Windows COM redirection allows serial programs to be redirected to virtual COM ports without the need to modify program code. This makes the Com-Server LC the ideal solution for virtual environments such as VMware or HyperV, where physical COM ports are missing, or as a replacement for local serial interfaces. Communication can optionally be secured with TLS encryption to protect sensitive data. Multipoint operation allows distribution of data to up to six network participants simultaneously, while packetization options optimize serial protocols with sensitive timing requirements.

Box-to-Box for Transparent Data Transmission

The box-to-box function of the Com-Server LC enables logical connection of two Com-Servers over the network to create a bidirectional, transparent, and operating system-independent data tunnel. Serial data is transmitted quickly and reliably between devices, with automatic reconnect functions handling connection interruptions. This feature is ideal for applications where serial devices at remote locations need to be connected, such as in automation technology or distributed production systems. Communication can optionally be secured with TLS encryption to ensure the highest data security.

TCP-/UDP Socket Communication for Flexible Integration

For developers, the Com-Server LC offers comprehensive options to integrate serial devices into custom network applications via TCP-/UDP socket communication. As a TCP client, the connection can be actively controlled, while the TCP server mode allows event-driven connections. The UDP protocol provides efficient, connectionless communication for applications requiring low latency. This flexibility makes the Com-Server LC ideal for integration into customized software solutions such as control systems or data loggers, and also supports multipoint operation and packetization options for optimized data transmission.

Robust Interfaces and Flexible Hardware

The Com-Server LC is equipped with a switchable RS232/RS422/RS485 interface and an Ethernet interface (10/100BaseT) with autosensing and auto-MDIX. An alternative hardware version as 20mA/TTY is also available. The robust design, including the option for DIN rail mounting, makes the device ideal for use in demanding industrial environments. Power supply is provided either via Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) or an external supply (12V-48V DC) via a screw terminal. The standards-compliant design ensures high immunity to interference according to EN 61000-6-2 and low emissions according to EN 55032:2015 + A1 Class B, EN 61000-3-2, and EN 61000-3-3.

Easy Commissioning and Management

Commissioning the Com-Server LC is extremely simple thanks to the WuTility software and is accomplished in just three clicks. Configuration is done via web-based management, Telnet, or control sockets from custom applications. Support for DHCP facilitates integration into networks, while remote configuration allows management from any network location. These features make the Com-Server LC especially attractive for network administrators and automation engineers who require a fast and low-maintenance solution.

Please note: No power supply is included in the delivery.

Comparison with Other Serial Network Connections

Compared to other serial network adapters, the Com-Server LC offers a compact and cost-effective solution for connecting a single serial device. While devices like the Com-Server PoE 3x Isolated support multiple serial ports, the Com-Server LC is optimized for applications with a single device. Unlike more complex solutions, the Com-Server LC relies on plug & play operation and easy commissioning via WuTility. Support for TLS encryption and multipoint operation distinguishes it from simpler converters.

Versatile Applications

The Com-Server LC is designed for applications in Industry 4.0, automation technology, and IT environments. In industry, it integrates serial devices such as sensors or controllers into networks. In automation technology, the box-to-box function enables connection of remote devices. For data archiving, it stores serial data from scales or barcode readers. Other applications include integration of legacy devices and networking of IoT devices.

Durability and Reliability

The Com-Server LC is designed for continuous operation and comes with a five-year warranty. The robust hardware and standards-compliant design make it ideal for industrial environments. Support for TLS encryption and multipoint operation ensures secure and flexible data transmission.
