How the Meter 3f ED 310.DB HWG is designed
A microprocessor digitizes current and voltage signals, performs all calculations, and controls the display, communication, and pulse outputs.
Measurement system
The ED 310 is a static multi-phase active energy meter with accuracy class A or B according to EN 50470-1 and EN 50470-3. The microprocessor digitizes analog current and voltage signals and calculates consumption and delivery for each tariff (up to four tariffs, or eight energy registers), as well as operating times, maximum current, and maximum power, including per-phase values. Calibration is performed entirely electronically, with no mechanically adjustable components. High measurement accuracy is maintained even when only one or two phases are connected, including phase shifts of up to 180°.
Connection and measurement range
The meter is directly connected using four wires to a reference voltage Un of 3 x 230/400 V (operating range 0.75 Un to 1.15 Un, nominal frequency 50 Hz, 45–55 Hz). Starting current is below 15 mA, minimum current is 200 mA, and transition current is 500 mA. The reference current Iref can be configured to 5 A or 10 A, while the continuous maximum current Imax can be configured in whole-number multiples of Ib between 40 A and 63 A. The total measurement range extends from 15 mA to 63 A. Power consumption per voltage circuit is a maximum of 0.7 W/8 VA, and a maximum of 0.01 VA per current circuit.
Tariff inputs
Up to three external inputs allow switching between up to four tariffs. Switching is performed by applying a switching voltage Ut of 230 V to the tariff terminals (permitted range 0.75 Ut to 1.15 Ut, maximum consumption at 230 V: 1.5 mA). The active tariff is shown on the display.
M-Bus communication module
The DB version is equipped with an M-Bus module that is galvanically isolated from the rest of the meter and powered via the two-wire communication line itself (supply range 24–36 V DC). In idle mode, the module draws 2.4 mA, logically representing “1”. To transmit a logical “0”, the current increases to 12–20 mA. Depending on the selected communication speed, distances between 350 m and 1,000 m can be covered. Both RJ45 sockets are identical and allow several meters to be connected in series on the same bus.
Optical interface and S0 output
An optical interface according to EN 62056-21 enables local reading via an optical probe connected to a PC or PDA using RS-232 or USB. The communication speed can be configured from 300 Bd to 9,600 Bd. The programmable S0 output (class A according to EN 62053-31, two-wire, open collector) provides 0.15 to 10,000 pulses/kWh with a standard pulse width of 40 ms, a supply voltage of 24 V DC (max. 30 V DC), a current of 5–15 mA, and a maximum cable length of 1,000 m. A red calibration LED also emits light pulses using the programmable meter constant (default: 10,000 pulses/kWh) for testing purposes.
Housing, display, and environment
The housing (107 x 91 x 71.5 mm, approx. 0.4 kg without or 0.5 kg with communication module) is designed for DIN-rail mounting and provides IP20 protection in an operating temperature range of -25 °C to +55 °C without condensation. The LCD display can show consumption/delivery per tariff, RMS current and voltage, instantaneous power, maximum values, power factor, operating time, meter constant, and an instantaneous power bar graph. The L1, L2, and L3 symbols indicate the presence and correct sequence of the phase voltages. Delivery values are marked with a preceding “-”.
What “ED 310.DB” means
The type designation of the ED 310 family encodes the connection type, communication module, and other features.
D = Direct connection
The “D” in ED 310.D stands for the direct four-wire connection, in contrast to the indirect ED 310.I version using current transformers.
B = M-Bus module
The meter is equipped with a display and M-Bus communication module. Alternatives include “0” without an additional module or “M” with an RS-485 module.
Optical communication
The Meter 3f ED 310.DB HWG also features optical communication according to EN 62056-21.
ODB measurement direction
The ODB symbol indicates the “consumption” measurement direction; ODB/DOD stands for consumption and delivery. The exact measurement direction is defined in the customer data sheet.
