The MID-certified three-phase meter for operation with current transformers
The HW group Meter 3f PRO380-Mb x/5A M-Bus is a static three-phase energy meter for indirect measurement via external current transformers (CTs) with an M-Bus interface. It measures and displays a range of instantaneous values, including voltage, current, active power, reactive power, apparent power, mains frequency and power factor – some of these values on the LCD display and others additionally via M-Bus.
MID-compliant for billing purposes: The PRO380-Mb x/5A complies with the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) 2014/32/EU. This MID approval confirms the meter’s accuracy and quality and permits its use for billing purposes, for example in consumption-based cost allocation in multi-unit buildings.
For indirect measurement with current transformers: Unlike the direct-measurement version, this meter is not connected directly to the full load current. Instead, it is connected to external current transformers (CTs), which reduce the primary current to a secondary current of x/5A. This also makes the meter suitable for considerably higher currents than direct measurement would allow. The PRO380 series is also available as a standard version, a dual-tariff version, and with M-Bus and pulse output.
Indirect measurement, M-Bus and pulse output in one device
The PRO380-Mb x/5A combines precise energy measurement via current transformers with several data transmission options.
Indirect measurement via CTs
Three-phase measurement at 3x230V/400V via external current transformers with an x/5A secondary current.
MID-certified
Compliant with the Measuring Instruments Directive 2014/32/EU and suitable for billing purposes.
M-Bus interface
Digital reading of meter data via M-Bus in accordance with EN13757-3.
S0 pulse output
Additional forward and reverse pulse outputs for remote reading or accuracy testing.
Comprehensive measured values
Voltage, current, active, reactive and apparent power, mains frequency and power factor for each phase.
Infrared interface
Reading and configuration via PC software using an optical infrared interface.
How the PRO380-Mb x/5A is designed
The PRO380-Mb x/5A is housed in flame-retardant PC plastic and is designed for installation on a 35 mm DIN rail.
Housing and front cover
The housing is made of flame-retardant PC plastic and has a transparent, coloured protective cover over the connection terminals. The device weighs approximately 0.39 kg and clips onto a 35 mm DIN rail.
Two-line LCD display
A multifunctional 8-digit LCD display shows the current measured value in the upper line and the unit, phase and/or direction in the lower line. The blue backlight can be permanently switched on, switched off or activated by pressing a button.
Two control buttons
Two buttons on the front are used to scroll through the display pages and configure the device. Depending on the hold time (1, 3 or 5 seconds), the buttons are used for scrolling, opening a menu or confirming a setting.
Red status LED
A red LED on the front flashes proportionally to the measured energy flow – 10,000 pulses per kWh. The faster it flashes, the more power is currently flowing through the connected current transformers.
CT input terminals (CT1–CT3)
Instead of the phase conductors, the secondary cables of the three external current transformers (CT1, CT2 and CT3) are connected here on the input and output sides. The scaled measuring current (x/5A) is supplied through these connections.
Voltage measurement terminals (UL1–UL3, UN)
In addition to the CT inputs, the meter has dedicated terminals for measuring the voltage of each phase (UL1, UL2 and UL3) and for the neutral conductor (UN), as the voltage must be measured separately during indirect measurement.
S0 pulse outputs
Two electrically isolated open-collector outputs (terminals 18/19 for forward pulses and 20/21 for reverse pulses) output energy consumption proportionally as pulses. In this version, the outputs are always based on a CT ratio of 5/5.
M-Bus communication terminals
Digital M-Bus communication in accordance with EN13757-3 takes place via terminals 22/23.
External tariff input
External 230V AC voltage can be applied to terminals 24/25 to switch between tariffs T1 and T2.
Infrared port
The meter can be read and configured by direct contact using an optional infrared reading head and PC software via the optical infrared interface (IEC62056-21:2002 protocol).
Set the current transformer ratio before commissioning
Important note: The CT ratio must be programmed before commissioning and cannot be changed afterwards. An incorrectly configured CT ratio can result in incorrect billing values.
When switched on for the first time, the meter automatically prompts for the CT ratio.
- After switching on, the display shows “SEt Ct – CTx 0005”
- Select the secondary current /1 or /5
- Confirm by holding both buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds
- Enter the four-digit primary current (0001–9999)
- Confirm each digit individually by holding both buttons for 3 seconds
- The CT ratio is permanently stored after the final digit has been confirmed
What the PRO380-Mb x/5A displays
The meter displays a wide range of instantaneous values, individually for each phase and as a total value.
- Voltage for each phase (L1, L2 and L3)
- Current for each phase (L1, L2 and L3), based on the programmed CT ratio
- Total and phase-specific active power

Frequently asked questions
What is the HW group Meter 3f PRO380-Mb x/5A M-Bus and what is it used for?
The PRO380-Mb x/5A is an MID-certified three-phase energy meter for indirect measurement via external current transformers with an M-Bus interface. Thanks to its MID approval, it is also suitable for billing purposes in installations with higher currents.
How does this meter differ from the direct-measurement PRO380-Mb 100A version?
The PRO380-Mb x/5A is connected via external current transformers (CTs), which reduce the primary current to a secondary current of x/5A. It measures current and voltage via separate terminals. In contrast, the 100A version is connected directly to the full load current and operates without external current transformers.
Are the current transformers included in the delivery?
No. External current transformers are required for operation, but must be purchased separately to match the respective installation.
How is the CT ratio configured?
When switched on for the first time, the meter automatically prompts for the CT ratio: first the secondary current (/1 or /5), followed by the four-digit primary current. Each entry is confirmed by holding both buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. The CT ratio must be programmed before commissioning and cannot be changed afterwards.
How can the data be read?
The data can be read digitally via the M-Bus interface in accordance with EN13757-3. An S0 pulse output and an infrared interface for direct reading via PC software are also available.
How many meters can be operated on one M-Bus line?
Up to 64 meters per bus, depending on the M-Bus level converter, the selected baud rate and the installation conditions.
How is the PRO380-Mb x/5A installed?
The meter clips onto a 35 mm DIN rail and should be installed on a fire-resistant wall in a dry and well-ventilated environment.
Does the PRO380-Mb x/5A support two tariffs?
Yes. An external 230V AC input at terminals 24/25 can be used to switch between tariffs T1 and T2.
