MID-certified single-phase energy meter with Modbus
The HW group PRO1-Mod 0.25–45A ModBus MID is a static single-phase active energy meter for direct measurement up to 45 A. It belongs to the Inepro PRO1 series and is certified according to the EU Measuring Instruments Directive 2014/32/EU (MID), which means it may also be used for legally regulated billing purposes.
In addition to the LCD display showing instantaneous values such as voltage, current, active, reactive and apparent power, frequency and power factor, the Mod variant features an RS485 interface with Modbus RTU protocol for central remote reading. This makes the meter particularly suitable for energy submetering in combination with higher-level HWg monitoring systems.

How the PRO1-Mod 0.25–45A ModBus MID is constructed
The series DIN housing made of flame-retardant PC plastic measures 17.5 x 117 x 63 mm (W x H x D), height without protective cover 90 mm, weight approx. 0.08 kg.
Measurement system and accuracy
Nominal voltage Un 230 V AC with an operating range of 195–253 V AC. Base current (Ib) 5 A, maximum rated current (Imax) 45 A, operating current range 0.4 % Ib to Imax. The meter achieves accuracy class B according to EN 50470-1/-3 (equivalent to 1 % accuracy) and complies with the basic error limits of ±1.5 % at 0.05 Ib and ±1.0 % between 0.1 Ib and Imax (each at cos φ = 1, 0.5L or 0.8C). The operating frequency is 50 Hz ±10 %, internal power consumption is max. 2 W or 10 VA per phase.
Overcurrent withstand and insulation
The meter can temporarily withstand 30 times Imax for 0.01 s. The insulation withstands 4 kV AC test voltage for 1 minute as well as surge voltages of 6 kV (1.2/50 µs wave); the protection class is II (double insulated). The housing achieves protection class IP51 and is designed for mechanical environmental class M1 and electromagnetic environmental class E2 according to 2014/32/EU.
Connection and terminals
Connection is made via terminals 1 (phase in, L-IN), 3 (phase out, L-OUT), 4 (neutral in, N) and 6 (neutral out, N); the maximum terminal diameter for conductors is 8 mm² (solid copper). Terminals 20/21 carry the S0 pulse output, terminals 23/24 the Modbus communication (RS485, on the Mod variant via two identical RJ45 sockets for daisy-chaining to further meters). The meter stores all meter readings in a non-volatile memory for more than 10 years.
Display and control button
The two-line LCD shows direction and communication indicators in the upper line and the actual measured values in the lower line. A red LED flashes proportionally to the measured active power (standard 10,000 impulses/kWh) and indicates the energy direction (import/export) via the FW/RV symbol. By pressing the button (1, 3 or 5 seconds) you can scroll through all data pages or call up the programming menu; without operation the display automatically returns to scroll mode after 30 seconds (standard cycle time 10 seconds, adjustable 1–30 seconds). The display backlight can be configured to On/Off/Button mode.
Modbus RTU and infrared communication
The Mod variant communicates via RS485 using the Modbus RTU protocol (16-bit CRC). Factory settings are address 01 and baud rate 9600 Bd (8 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit); baud rate (1200/2400/4800/9600 Bd), parity (even/none/odd) and Modbus ID (1–247) can be changed on the device via a key combination and a 4-digit password. The maximum bus load is 60 meters per bus, the range up to 1000 m. For test setups via a serial converter without a complete Modbus infrastructure, the manufacturer recommends an additional termination resistor (120 Ω/0.25 W) at terminals 23/24. In addition, an infrared interface according to IEC 62056-21:2002 (IEC1107, 900–1000 nm, direct contact) is available for local reading via an infrared head to a PC.
S0 pulse output
The galvanically isolated, optically isolated S0 output (open collector) requires an external voltage source of 5–27 V DC at pin 20 (collector) and the signal wire at pin 21 (emitter); the maximum switching current is 100 mA. The pulse rate is programmable between 10,000, 2,000, 1,000, 100, 10, 1, 0.1 and 0.01 imp./kWh, the pulse width is 32 ms for powers up to 5625 W and 11.2 ms above that.
Read measured values directly via Modbus RTU
Via the RS485 interface (function code 03, read; function code 06/10, write) the meter provides extensive registers for instantaneous and energy values.
Instantaneous values (from register 5000)
Voltage, current, mains frequency, active, reactive and apparent power as well as power factor, each as Float ABCD.
Energy values (from register 6000)
Total, forward and reverse active and reactive energy per tariff, in kWh or kvarh.
Device information (from register 4000)
Serial number, firmware/hardware version, combination code, error code and power-down counter.
Writable parameters
Modbus ID, baud rate, parity, LCD cycle time, S0 output rate and combination code can be remotely configured via function code 06/10.
