The DIN rail expander for more digital inputs and outputs
The HW group RTU Expander 2004 is a 9-module DIN rail device with an RS-485 Modbus RTU interface. It provides 20 digital inputs with S0 pulse counters as well as 4 digital relay outputs and thereby expands the input/output capacity of Perseus Industrial devices via Modbus/RTU.
Multiple RTU Expanders can be connected in series (daisy-chain) from the RS-485 terminal block. All expanders in the chain can be powered directly via the RS-485 terminal block with a nominal voltage of 12 V (GND and +U), so that no separate power supply is required for each module.
Key features at a glance
20x digital inputs (DI)
Dry-contact inputs with S0 pulse counters, compliant with EN 62053-31 Class B.
Suitable for many detectors
E.g. smoke detectors, door contacts, motion detectors or mains voltage presence.
4x relay outputs (DO)
Standard relays with up to 50 V / 1000 mA switching load per output.
RS-485 Modbus/RTU
Connection to the Perseus Industrial family as well as daisy-chaining of multiple expanders.
How the RTU Expander 2004 is designed
The plastic housing for DIN rail mounting occupies 9 DIN module widths, measures approximately 155 x 90 x 57 mm (W x H x D) and weighs about 302 g, with protection class IP40.
DIN rail housing
Compact plastic housing for mounting on a 35 mm DIN rail, designed for industrial use.
20 input terminals
Twenty screw-terminal inputs for dry contacts, each with an integrated S0 pulse counter for capturing counting pulses, e.g. from electricity or water meters.
4 relay outputs
Four standard relay outputs (up to 50 V / 1000 mA) for controlling external actuators such as ventilation, lighting or signal devices, galvanically isolated.
RS-485 terminal block
An RS-485 terminal block connects the expander via Modbus/RTU to a Perseus Industrial device and simultaneously serves to supply the 12 V supply voltage for the entire expander chain.
Status LEDs
LEDs on the device front indicate the status of the individual inputs and outputs as well as the operating state.
Scalable RTU DIN rail architecture
The RTU Expander 2004 is part of a modular system: DIN rail RTU expanders can be connected to the Perseus Industrial family as required by the respective application in order to scale the number of DI (dry-contact inputs) and DO (standard relay outputs).
- Perseus Industrial 310/315 (main device): 5x DI, 2x DO, 2x RJ11 ports, 1x RS-485 RTU, 2x WLD / 1x WLD-L – 6 DIN modules
- RTU Expander 1004: 10x DI, 4x DO – 6 DIN modules
- RTU Expander 2004: 20x DI, 4x DO – 9 DIN modules (this product)
- RTU Expander 3004: 30x DI, 4x DO – 12 DIN modules
- RTU Expander 0002 230V: 2x 230 V DO – 2 DIN modules
Areas of application
- External I/O expansion for the Perseus Industrial platform
- Connection of additional smoke detectors, door contacts or motion detectors
- Monitoring of mains voltage presence at multiple distribution boards
- Control of additional external actuators via the relay outputs
Frequently asked questions
What is the HW group RTU Expander 2004 and what is it used for?
The RTU Expander 2004 is a DIN rail expansion module with 20 digital inputs and 4 relay outputs. It expands the input/output capacity of devices from the Perseus Industrial family via an RS-485 Modbus/RTU connection.
Can multiple RTU Expanders be used at the same time?
Yes. Multiple RTU Expanders can be connected in series (daisy-chain) from the RS-485 terminal block of the Perseus device, also in combination with other expander models of the family.
Does each expander require its own power supply?
No. All RTU Expanders connected in the chain can be powered directly via the RS-485 terminal block (GND and +U) with a nominal voltage of 12 V.
Which detectors can be connected to the digital inputs?
According to the manufacturer, the inputs are suitable among other things for smoke detectors, door contacts, motion detectors and sensors for mains voltage presence, each as dry contact with S0 pulse counter.
How does the RTU Expander 2004 differ from the other models in the series?
The RTU Expander 2004 offers 20 digital inputs and 4 relay outputs on 9 DIN modules. Models 1004 and 3004 offer 10 and 30 digital inputs respectively, also with 4 relay outputs; model 0002 230V instead provides 2 additional 230 V relay outputs.
