RTU-Expander 3004

The input/output expander for the Perseus Industrial family

The HW group RTU Expander 3004 is a 12-module DIN rail device with an RS-485 Modbus RTU interface. It provides 30 digital inputs with S0 counters as well as 4 digital relay outputs and thereby expands the industrial I/O capabilities of the Perseus platform via Modbus/RTU.

Multiple RTU Expanders can be connected in series (daisy-chain) from the RS-485 terminal block. All devices in the chain can be powered with a nominal voltage of 12 V (GND and +U) via the RS-485 terminal block.

2

RS-485 terminal block

An RS-485 connection links the RTU Expander via Modbus/RTU to a Perseus Industrial device. Further RTU Expanders can be connected in series via the same terminal block, and all devices can be powered with 12 V (GND, +U).

3

4

4 DO terminals (relays)

Four terminals for standard relay outputs (up to 50 V / 1000 mA) for controlling external devices, with definable pulse outputs and local condition control.

5

Status indicators

LEDs on the device front indicate the status of power, RS-485 communication as well as the state of the individual DI and DO channels.

Scalable I/O expansion for the Perseus Industrial family

RTU Expanders can be flexibly combined depending on the application in order to specifically scale the number of digital inputs and outputs of a Perseus Industrial device (e.g. Perseus Industrial 310/315).

  • Perseus Industrial 310/315 (main device): 5x DI, 2x DO, 2x RJ11 ports, 1x RS-485 RTU, 2x WLD / 1x WLD-L
  • RTU Expander 1004 (6 DIN modules): 10x DI, 4x DO
  • RTU Expander 2004 (9 DIN modules): 20x DI, 4x DO
  • RTU Expander 3004 (12 DIN modules): 30x DI, 4x DO
  • RTU Expander 0002 230V (2 DIN modules): 2x 230 V DO

Multiple RTU Expanders can be connected in series (daisy-chain) from the RS-485 terminal block of a Perseus Industrial device and all powered together with 12 V via this terminal block.

Commissioning in just a few steps

The RTU Expander 3004 is configured directly via a Perseus Industrial device and does not require its own configuration interface.

  1. Mount the device on the DIN rail in the control cabinet
  2. Establish the RS-485 connection to the Perseus Industrial device (or connect further RTU Expanders in series)
  3. Ensure power supply via the RS-485 terminal block (12 V, GND and +U)
  4. Connect detectors to the DI terminals and actuators to the DO terminals (relays)
  5. Configure the additional inputs and outputs on the Perseus Industrial device

Practical application examples

  • External I/O expansion for the Perseus platform
  • Connection of numerous smoke, door and motion detectors in industrial plants
  • Acquisition of power failure detectors across multiple locations in one control cabinet
  • Reading of energy meters with S0 interface
💡

Practical example: In a large control cabinet, several RTU Expander 3004 units are connected in series from the RS-485 terminal block of a Perseus Industrial device in order to acquire several dozen door and smoke detectors as well as S0 energy meters in total. The four relay outputs of each expander additionally control ventilation or signal lights at the respective locations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the HW group RTU Expander 3004 and what is it used for?

The RTU Expander 3004 is a 12-module DIN rail device that expands the digital I/O capacities of a Perseus Industrial device via Modbus/RTU by 30 digital inputs with S0 counters and 4 relay outputs. It serves as an external I/O expansion for the Perseus platform.

Does the RTU Expander 3004 have different variants?

No, the RTU Expander 3004 is supplied as a standalone module without options. Within the RTU Expander series, however, further models with different I/O counts are available (1004, 2004, 3004, 0002 230V).

How is the RTU Expander 3004 connected to a Perseus device?

Via an RS-485 terminal block using the Modbus/RTU protocol. Multiple RTU Expanders can be connected in series (daisy-chain) from the same terminal block and powered together with 12 V DC via this terminal block.

What is an S0 pulse counter and what is it used for?

The 30 digital inputs of the RTU Expander 3004 feature integrated S0 pulse counters according to EN 62053-31, Class B. This allows, for example, electricity, gas or water meters with an S0 interface to be connected directly and their pulses to be counted.

Which Perseus devices can be expanded with the RTU Expander 3004?

The RTU Expander 3004 belongs to the Perseus Industrial module family and expands devices such as the Perseus Industrial 310 and 315 with additional digital inputs and relay outputs.

How is the RTU Expander 3004 powered?

The device does not require a separate power supply. It is powered with a nominal voltage of 12 V (GND and +U) directly via the RS-485 terminal block, which also handles communication with the Perseus Industrial device.
