Nano Sensorics AmpSense

The wireless LoRaWAN current sensor for three-phase current measurement

The Nano Sensorics AmpSense is an advanced sensor for measuring electrical current via easy-to-install, non-invasive split-core current transformers. It is designed for indoor use and measures three-phase alternating current simultaneously via three current transformer clamps. An integrated advanced intelligent (AI) calculation algorithm ensures reliable current detection with an accuracy of less than ±1 %. Calibration is not required for the AmpSense.

Data transmission is performed via a Class A LoRaWAN® radio network. The sensor is powered by 3.6 V lithium batteries and achieves a battery life of up to 13 years depending on the configuration. Configuration is done "over the air" via downlink, making the AmpSense easy to commission and integrate into existing LoRaWAN networks.

1

Housing

Robust plastic housing made of ASA+PC-FR with a protection class of up to IP65, intended for wall mounting indoors. An LED on the front of the housing indicates the connection status.

2

Three split-core current transformers

Three hinged current transformers are connected to the housing via cables – one per phase. Each transformer is clamped around the respective conductor without interrupting the line.

3

Rear side with battery compartment

The rear cover is opened with a screwdriver. Behind it is the battery compartment for two AA lithium batteries (3.6 V, type ER14505).

4

Wall mounting

After closing the rear cover, the housing is fastened to the wall with two suitable screws.

5

Labeling

On the rear of the sensor there is a label with the sensor name, serial number, production date and QR code.

Reliable radio connection over long distances

The AmpSense uses LoRaWAN® for energy-efficient and long-range data transmission.

LoRaWAN® 1.0.3

Class A end device with support for OTAA, ABP, ADR and Adaptive Channel Setup.

End-to-end encryption

Securing of the radio transmission via LoRaWAN® AES encryption.

Frequency band EU863–870 (standard)

Also optionally available for US902–928, AU915–928, EU433, RU864 or IN865.

Range of up to 10 km

Transmission range with line of sight; the actual range depends on the environment.

Adjust settings via downlink

After installation, the AmpSense can be conveniently configured remotely without having to open the device again.

  • Measuring interval (Tx period) adjustable via downlink on port 3
  • Green status LED can be switched on, off or briefly toggled via downlink
  • Device reset can be triggered via downlink command
  • Multiple settings can be combined in a single downlink message
  • Optional configuration additionally possible via NFC directly on the device

Easy commissioning, low-maintenance in operation

After inserting the batteries, the AmpSense automatically connects to the LoRaWAN network.

  1. Open the rear cover with a screwdriver
  2. Insert two AA lithium batteries (3.6 V)
  3. Close the rear cover again
  4. Mount the housing on the wall with two suitable screws
  5. Clamp the three split-core current transformers around the respective phase conductors without interrupting the lines
  6. Wait for the connection to be established: The LED flashes for 15 seconds and lights up continuously for 3 seconds if the connection is successful before going out

If the connection is not successful immediately, the sensor automatically makes further connection attempts after 10 seconds, 60 seconds, 10 minutes, 1 hour and finally every 24 hours. The button on the device can be used to restart the sensor and trigger an immediate new connection attempt. Apart from occasional battery replacement, the AmpSense is maintenance-free and is factory-calibrated; further calibration is not required. The sensor is intended exclusively for indoor use and should not be mounted near ventilation slots, windows or door openings with constant drafts.

Important safety instructions

  • Suitable for indoor use only
  • Do not open, crush or puncture the housing or battery
  • Remove batteries when not in use to prevent leakage
  • Keep the device and battery dry and away from liquids
  • Use only equivalent battery types recommended by the manufacturer
  • Do not bend, deform, paint or place the sensor in a microwave
  • Do not clean with solvents or alcohol, only with a slightly damp cloth
  • Not suitable for metrological or commercial billing purposes

Environmentally friendly disposal

The AmpSense falls under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU). The device and its components must be disposed of separately from household and industrial waste at a local collection point. The battery must be disposed of separately.

Areas of application

According to the manufacturer, the AmpSense is suitable for current measurement in commercial, industrial and public buildings and can be connected to energy management or building management systems (BMS) as well as SCADA systems.

  • Smart Buildings
  • Government buildings
  • Public buildings
  • Industrial facilities
  • Factories
  • Warehouses

By monitoring the three-phase current, according to the manufacturer, electrical consumers such as lighting (indoor and street lighting), air conditioning (HVAC) or elevators can be monitored for anomalies: Changes in current consumption can indicate faults or maintenance requirements at an early stage. The data obtained also support the analysis of system efficiency, help to reduce energy consumption and contribute to reducing the CO₂ footprint of connected buildings.

The Nano Sensorics AmpSense combines precise three-phase current measurement, non-invasive split-core installation and battery-powered wireless LoRaWAN connectivity in a compact, low-maintenance sensor.
