The LoRaWAN sensor for CO2, temperature and humidity indoors
The Nano Sensorics CARBONLESS is an indoor sensor for the complete measurement of CO2 concentration, temperature and humidity. The sensor is housed in a room sensor enclosure, designed for wall mounting and operates fully wirelessly with 3.6 V AA lithium batteries. An integrated advanced intelligent (AI) calculation algorithm ensures reliable acquisition of the measured variables; data transmission is performed via a Class A LoRaWAN® radio network.
The CARBONLESS is easy to set up and connect to the LoRaWAN radio network. Thanks to the integrated AI algorithms and Automatic Baseline Correction (ABC) technology, the sensor automatically calibrates itself in normal indoor environments.
CO2, temperature and humidity in one device
The CARBONLESS simultaneously records the three most important parameters for a healthy indoor climate.
CO2 measurement
Measuring range from 400 to 5,000 ppm, extendable up to 10,000 ppm, with an accuracy of ±30 ppm ±3 % of the measured value.
Temperature measurement
Detection in the range from -10 °C to 70 °C with an accuracy of max. ±0.4 °C.
Humidity measurement
Detection from 0 to 100 % relative humidity (non-condensing).
AI calculation algorithm
Integrated intelligent algorithm with automatic self-calibration (ABC technology).
Battery life of up to 10 years
Operation via 2 AA lithium batteries, runtime depending on settings and environment.
How the CARBONLESS is designed
The compact room sensor housing measures 86 x 86 x 25.5 mm and weighs 80 g without batteries.
Housing
Robust plastic housing made of ABS UL94-V0, designed for permanent wall mounting indoors. The side ventilation slots must not be blocked or taped over, as they are required for air circulation to the sensor.
Battery compartment behind the rear cover
The rear cover of the housing is opened with a screwdriver. Underneath is the battery compartment for two AA lithium batteries of type ER14505 with 3.6 V.
Button and LED indicator
A button is used to restart the device and triggers an immediate connection attempt to the LoRaWAN network. The green LED indicates the connection status: After inserting the batteries or after a reset, it flashes for 15 seconds; if the connection is successful, it lights up continuously for 3 seconds and then goes out. The LED can additionally be switched on, off or toggled for 5 seconds via downlink command.
Mounting lugs
The rear cover has holes through which the sensor is fastened to the wall with two suitable screws.
Labeling
On the rear of the sensor there is a label with the sensor name, serial number, production date and QR code.
Reliable radio connection over long distances
The CARBONLESS uses LoRaWAN® for energy-efficient and long-range data transmission.
LoRaWAN® 1.0.3
Class A end device with support for OTAA, ABP, ADR and Adaptive Channel Setup.
End-to-end encryption
Securing of the radio transmission via LoRaWAN® AES encryption.

Also optionally available for US902–928, AU915–928, EU433, RU864 or IN865.
Range of up to 10 km
Transmission range with line of sight, link budget from 137 dB (SF7) to 151 dB (SF12).
Adjust settings via downlink
After installation, the CARBONLESS can be conveniently configured remotely without having to open the device again.
- Measuring interval (Tx period) adjustable via downlink on port 3, minimum 30 seconds
- Green status LED can be switched on, off or toggled for 5 seconds via downlink
- Device reset can be triggered via downlink command
- Multiple settings can be combined in a single downlink message
- Optional configuration additionally possible via NFC directly on the device
Factory-calibrated with automatic self-calibration
The CARBONLESS is factory-calibrated and requires no further maintenance in normal operation.
Thanks to the integrated intelligent calculation algorithms (AI) and the Automatic Baseline Correction (ABC) technology from Nano Sensorics, the sensor is maintenance-free in normal indoor environments. A “normal environment” is defined as a room without continuous 24-hour occupancy and without permanently high CO2 levels.
The ABC technology continuously tracks the lowest measured CO2 value over a defined period and compensates for long-term drift against the expected fresh air value of 400 ppm CO2. In a normal indoor environment, the CO2 value temporarily drops almost to outdoor air level over the course of a week; by comparing the lowest value over 7 days with this 400 ppm reference point, the CARBONLESS detects whether a zero-point adjustment is necessary.
If a room is permanently occupied and the CO2 value never drops to background level – for example in closed, unventilated rooms – the ABC algorithm does not work reliably. In this case, the ABC function must be deactivated and the sensor must instead be calibrated manually every two to three years.
For manual calibration, the device is taken outdoors to fresh air for 10 minutes after inserting the batteries; the sensor uses the CO2 values measured there as a reference for calibrating the indoor values.
Installation in a few steps
The installation manual describes the procedure from battery installation to network connection.
Open the housing
The rear cover of the sensor is opened with a screwdriver.
Insert the batteries
Two AA lithium batteries with 3.6 V are inserted into the battery compartment as shown in the manual.
Close the housing and mount
The rear cover is closed again and the housing is securely fastened to the wall with two suitable screws.
Check the network connection
After inserting the batteries or after pressing the button, the sensor automatically connects to the LoRaWAN network; the LED indicates the connection process.
Observe the mounting location
The sensor must not be placed near ventilation openings, windows or door openings with a constant supply of fresh air. The device is not suitable for outdoor use, nor for dusty or dirty environments with excessive operating and storage temperatures.
Note on establishing the connection: If the first connection is not successful, further automatic attempts follow after 10 seconds, 60 seconds, 10 minutes, 1 hour and finally every 24 hours until the connection is successfully established. Pressing the button restarts the sensor and immediately triggers a new connection attempt.
Important safety instructions
