Backup Power Supply Module

Uninterruptible Backup Power Supply for Your Monitoring System

The Didactum backup power supply module is an essential expansion module for anyone who values maximum fail-safe operation and system availability for their monitoring solution. Especially in critical IT infrastructures, data centers, industrial facilities, and building management, continuous monitoring plays a central role. A power outage can not only lead to data loss or system failures, but also to serious security risks - with the Didactum backup module, such scenarios can be effectively avoided.

The module is inserted directly into the designated battery slot of the Didactum Monitoring System or PDU and is automatically recognized thanks to plug-and-play technology - no complicated configuration is required. During normal operation via the main power supply, the installed batteries are continuously charged. If a power failure or interruption occurs, the module automatically switches to battery operation without interruption, so that the monitoring system and all connected sensors and extensions continue to receive power.

As soon as the main power supply is restored, the batteries are automatically recharged and ready for the next use. The status of the backup module can be viewed at any time via the monitoring system's web interface; warning messages for low battery charge or technical problems are generated automatically and can be sent to the responsible personnel by email, SMS, or SNMP trap.

Installation and Integration in Didactum Devices

Installation of the backup power supply is extremely simple and user-friendly. The module is specifically designed for seamless integration into Didactum Monitoring Systems such as the Monitoring System 500T and 550T, as well as into the PDU4T and PDU8T. It is inserted directly into the corresponding monitoring device and connected via the designated slots. Before installation, ensure that only the recommended 14500 Li-ion batteries, 800 mAh, 2.5A, Button Top (XTAR), are used - these offer an optimal combination of capacity, safety, and longevity. After inserting the batteries, the module is firmly connected to the monitoring device and can be easily combined with additional expansion modules and sensors.

Compatible Devices

The backup module can be used in the following Didactum devices that have a corresponding battery slot.

Monitoring System 500T

Backup power reserve for the central 19" monitoring unit.

Monitoring System 550T

Backup power reserve for the 19" rackmount solution with expanded I/Os.

PDU4T

Backup power supply for the switchable 4-port PDU.

PDU8T

Backup power supply for the switchable 8-port PDU.

Function and Benefits in Detail

While normal operation runs via the main power supply, the batteries of the backup power supply are continuously charged. If a power failure or interruption occurs, the module automatically switches to battery operation without interruption. This ensures that the Didactum Monitoring System remains active and can continue to power all connected sensors, such as temperature, humidity, smoke, or dust particle sensors. As soon as the main power supply is restored, the batteries are automatically recharged so they are ready for the next use.

💡

Practical example: During maintenance work on a data center's power grid, the main supply fails briefly. The monitoring system switches to the backup module without interruption, continues monitoring temperature and access sensors, and additionally reports the incident by email to the IT staff - as soon as power returns, the batteries automatically recharge.

Power Supply Priority in the System

The main board of compatible Didactum devices usually has several equivalent power supply lines (e.g. with redundant 230V AC or 24-48V DC supply). If several of these lines are active at the same time, the system automatically selects the line with the highest applied voltage - the switchover occurs without delay. The backup module is charged via the primary power supply line and only takes over system supply when all regular power supply lines fail at the same time. The system therefore only falls back on the battery reserve in the event of a complete power failure.

LED Indicators on the Module

Three LEDs on the front of the backup module provide information about the current operating status at all times.

1

“Progress"

Lights up while the installed batteries are charging.

2

“Complete"

Indicates that the batteries are fully charged.

3

“Input power"

Signals that voltage is present on the module's charging line.

Bridge Time and Battery Specification

The bridging time of the backup power supply depends on the number and power consumption of the connected sensors and extensions. It ranges from about 8 minutes at maximum load to 8 hours at lower load. This makes the module suitable both for short power outages and for longer interruptions, such as those that may occur during maintenance work or network issues.

Bridging timeapprox. 8 min. to 8 hrs.
Battery typeLi-ion, 14500 format
Voltage3.7 V
Recommended battery14500, 800 mAh, 2.5A, Button Top (XTAR)
⚠️

Important battery notes: Only rechargeable 14500 Li-ion batteries may be used. Do not use non-rechargeable batteries. Do not use deeply discharged or fully discharged batteries. The batteries are not included in the scope of delivery and must be purchased separately.

Installation in a Few Steps

The backup module is installed directly on the monitoring system housing and is easy to fit even for users with limited technical experience.

  1. Loosen the two countersunk screws on the cover labeled "Battery extension slot" on the rear of the device and remove the cover.
  2. Insert only rechargeable Li-ion batteries (14500 format, 3.7 V) into the VT-ACCU board.
  3. Place the battery housing with its contact pins into the corresponding recesses on the board.
  4. Slide the battery housing in until it clicks into place on the board.
  5. Fasten the unit to the cover using the two M3 screws previously removed.
  6. Insert the assembled unit into the "Battery extension slot" of the monitoring system and fasten the cover back onto the housing with the two countersunk screws.

Storage and Shipping Note

⚠️

Attention: If the backup module is installed in a monitoring system with already charged batteries and then shipped, the system will remain operational during transport until the batteries are fully discharged. For shipping or longer storage, it is therefore recommended to remove the batteries beforehand or disconnect the system completely from the mains.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the backup power supply module and what is it needed for?

It is an expansion module that automatically and without interruption supplies compatible Didactum Monitoring Systems and PDUs with battery power in the event of a failure of the main power supply. This keeps monitoring active throughout the power outage.

Are the batteries included?

No. The module is delivered without batteries. Only rechargeable 14500 Li-ion batteries may be used; the recommended type is 14500, 800 mAh, 2.5A, Button Top from XTAR. Non-rechargeable or deeply discharged batteries must not be used.

Which devices is the backup module compatible with?

The module is designed for installation in the Monitoring System 500T, the Monitoring System 550T, as well as the PDU4T and PDU8T.

How long can the module power the system during a power outage?

The bridging time depends on the number and power consumption of the connected sensors and extensions and is between about 8 minutes at maximum load and up to 8 hours at lower load.

When does the system switch to battery reserve?

As long as at least one of the regular power supply lines is active, the system automatically uses the line with the highest applied voltage. Only when all regular power supply lines fail at the same time does the backup module take over system supply without delay.

How can I tell the battery charge status?

Three LEDs on the module itself indicate the status: "Progress" during charging, "Complete" when the batteries are fully charged, and "Input power" as soon as voltage is present on the charging line. In addition, the battery status can be viewed at any time in the monitoring system's web interface, including automatic warnings when the battery level is low.

What should be considered when shipping a system with the backup module installed?

If a monitoring system with already charged batteries in the backup module is shipped, it will remain operational for as long as the batteries last during transport. For shipping or longer storage, the batteries should therefore be removed beforehand or the system should be completely disconnected from the mains.

Do I need to configure the module manually after installation?

No. Thanks to plug-and-play technology, the Didactum Monitoring System automatically detects the installed backup module, so no additional configuration is required.
