The Wireless LoRaWAN Sensor for Refrigeration System Monitoring
The Nano Sensorics FridgeSave is an advanced indoor sensor for fully capturing the status and condition of a refrigeration or cooling system. It combines a temperature sensor with a non-invasive current transformer (CT) and thus simultaneously measures temperature and current (RMS) – for example to monitor the operating status of a compressor or pump. The FridgeSave is housed in an industrial enclosure and is designed for mounting on a DIN rail or via a magnetic holder.
The sensor is fully wireless and powered by 3.6 V AA lithium batteries. An integrated advanced intelligent (AI) calculation algorithm ensures reliable readings for temperature and current. Data transmission takes place via a Class A LoRaWAN® radio network; configuration is performed “over the air” via downlink.
Temperature and Current in One Sensor
The FridgeSave simultaneously monitors two key parameters for the condition of a refrigeration system.
Temperature Measurement
Measuring range from -40 °C to 105 °C with accuracies of ±0.8 °C or ±0.4 °C depending on the temperature range.
Single-Phase Current Measurement
Non-invasive, clamp-on current transformer (CT) for measuring RMS current.
AI Calculation Algorithm
Integrated intelligent algorithm with automatic self-calibration.
Robust Industrial Enclosure
Designed for industrial and harsh operating environments.
Battery Powered
Fully wireless operation with 1 or 2 AA lithium batteries.
How the FridgeSave Is Built
The FridgeSave enclosure measures a compact 121 x 62 x 26 mm and weighs 200 g without or 248 g with battery.
Industrial Enclosure
Robust plastic housing made of ASA+PC-FF, designed for mounting on a DIN rail or via magnetic holder in industrial environments. An LED on the front of the enclosure indicates the connection status.
Temperature Probe
A temperature probe is permanently connected to the enclosure via an approx. 2 m cable and measures directly at the desired point, e.g. on the cooling circuit.
Split-Core Current Transformer
A hinged current transformer is connected to the enclosure via an approx. 1 m cable and is clamped around the conductor to be measured without interrupting the line. Other cable lengths are possible according to the manufacturer.
Battery Compartment
The rear cover is opened with a screwdriver. Behind it is the battery compartment for one or two AA lithium batteries (3.6 V, type ER14505).
Labeling
On the rear of the sensor there is a label with sensor name, serial number, production date and QR code.
Reliable Long-Range Wireless Connectivity
The FridgeSave uses LoRaWAN® for energy-efficient and long-range data transmission.
LoRaWAN® 1.0.3
Class A end device with support for OTAA, ABP, ADR and Adaptive Channel Setup.
End-to-End Encryption
Radio transmission secured by LoRaWAN® AES encryption.
Frequency Band EU863–870 (Standard)
Also optionally available for US902–928, AU915–928, EU433, RU864 or IN865.
Range up to 10 km
Transmission range under line-of-sight conditions; the actual range depends on the environment.
Adjust Settings via Downlink
After installation, the FridgeSave can be conveniently configured remotely without having to open the device again.
- Measurement interval (Tx period) adjustable via downlink on port 3
- Green status LED can be switched on, off or briefly toggled via downlink
- Device reset can be triggered via downlink command
- Multiple settings can be combined in a single downlink message
- Optional configuration additionally possible via NFC directly on the device
Simple Commissioning, Low Maintenance in Operation
After inserting the batteries, the FridgeSave automatically connects to the LoRaWAN network.
- Open the rear cover with a screwdriver
- Insert two AA lithium batteries (3.6 V)
- Close the rear cover again
- Mount the enclosure on a DIN rail or via magnetic holder
- Position the temperature probe at the desired measuring point and clamp the current transformer around the conductor to be measured without interrupting the line
- Wait for the connection to be established: The LED flashes for 15 seconds and lights up continuously for 3 seconds upon successful connection before going out
If the connection is not established immediately, the sensor automatically makes further connection attempts after 10 seconds, 60 seconds, 10 minutes, 1 hour and finally every 24 hours. Using the button on the device, the sensor can be restarted and an immediate new connection attempt triggered. Apart from occasional battery replacement, the FridgeSave is maintenance-free and is factory-calibrated. The sensor is intended for indoor use and should not be mounted near ventilation slots, windows or door openings with constant drafts.
Important Safety Instructions
- Suitable for indoor use
- Do not open, crush or puncture the enclosure or battery
- Remove batteries when not in use to prevent leakage
- Keep the device and battery dry and away from liquids
- Use only equivalent battery types recommended by the manufacturer
- Do not bend, deform, paint or put the sensor in a microwave
- Do not clean with solvents or alcohol, only with a slightly damp cloth
- Not suitable for metrological or commercial billing purposes
Environmentally Sound Disposal
The FridgeSave falls under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU). The device and its components must be disposed of separately from household and industrial waste at a local collection point. The battery must be disposed of separately.
Areas of Application
According to the manufacturer, the FridgeSave is particularly designed for monitoring cooling and pumping systems.
- Monitoring the condition and maintenance needs of refrigeration and cooling systems
- Monitoring the pumping status of pumps (pumping fluid flow status)
- Food industry
- General environmental measurement
- Industrial plants and factories
- Renewable energy installations
The Nano Sensorics FridgeSave combines temperature and current measurement in a robust, battery-powered LoRaWAN sensor – a practical solution for early detection of anomalies in the operation of cooling systems or pumps, for example when the current consumption of a compressor or pump changes unusually.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Nano Sensorics FridgeSave and what is it used for?
The FridgeSave is a battery-powered LoRaWAN sensor that simultaneously measures temperature and current. It is used to monitor the condition and maintenance needs of refrigeration and cooling systems as well as pumping systems, for example in the food industry or in industrial plants.
Does the power line need to be interrupted for installation?
No. The current transformer is non-invasive (split-core) and is simply clamped around the conductor to be measured without disconnecting the line.
How is the FridgeSave mounted?
According to the manufacturer, the enclosure is designed for mounting on a DIN rail or via a magnetic holder, making it easy to install the sensor in control cabinets or on metallic plant components.
How long does the battery last?
The manufacturer’s specifications vary slightly here: the technical data state a battery life of less than 10 years, while the general feature list in the manual indicates up to 13 years. In any case, the actual runtime depends on the selected settings and ambient conditions. The sensor is powered by one or two 3.6 V AA lithium batteries.
Can the FridgeSave be installed outdoors?
No. According to the safety instructions in the manual, the FridgeSave is intended for indoor use, even though the enclosure is designed for industrial and harsh environments.
How are the measurement interval and other settings configured?
Configuration is primarily performed via LoRaWAN downlink message on port 3, for example to adjust the measurement interval, control the green LED or reset the device. Optional configuration via NFC directly on the device is also possible.
Are other cable lengths for the probe and current transformer possible?
As standard, the temperature probe cable length is 2 m and that of the current transformer is 1 m. According to the manufacturer, other cable lengths are also possible.
