sensorProbeX+ BEB unit

More Sensor Ports and Dry Contacts for Your SPX+ Master

The AKCP sensorProbeX+ BEB unit (SPX-BE-U-Sxx) is a pure expansion module for an existing sensorProbeX+ Master. Connected via the so-called Basic Expansion Bus (BEB), the BEB unit expands the number of available sensor ports and/or dry contact inputs without requiring an additional IP address, a dedicated network connection or a separate management interface. AKCP markets the sensorProbeX+ platform overall as “the world’s most advanced sensor monitoring device” – the BEB unit is the building block that allows this platform to be scaled cost-effectively within the same cabinet to significantly more sensors than a single SPX+ Master alone would enable.

Recommended for use within the same cabinet: According to the manufacturer, the BEB connection is designed for short distances within the same rack or cabinet. One SPX+ Master can connect up to 2 BEB units; the maximum total length of the cabling from the Master to the last unit in the chain is 18 meters – either as a single 18-meter run or split into 2x 9 meters when two BEB units are connected.

Since the BEB unit uses the same base design as the SPX+ Master, it is compatible with the entire AKCP sensor portfolio, including modern “Smart Sensors” such as thermal map sensors, RFID cabinet solutions, programmable LCD displays and battery monitoring sensors.

Choose SPX-BE-U-Sxx Variant

The sensorProbeX+ BEB unit is available in 5 factory-configured variants that differ in the number of sensor ports and/or dry contact inputs. In the order form, select the appropriate configuration via the dropdown “Choose SPX-BE-U-Sxx Variant”.

ℹ️

All 5 variants share the same BEB connection technology and can be combined freely with a compatible SPX+ Master. A maximum of 2 BEB units can be connected simultaneously per SPX+ Master – including as a combination of two different variants.

How the BEB Unit is Built

The housing of the BEB unit follows the low-profile design of the entire SPX+ family: 44 mm (W) x 44 mm (H) in cross-section, available as 0U tool-less rack mounting, classic 1U rack mounting or DIN rail mounting.

1

Sensor Ports (depending on variant)

RJ45 AutoSense ports automatically detect connected AKCP sensors. Depending on the selected variant, 4, 8 or 16 additional sensor ports are available.

2

Dry Contact I/O Terminal Blocks (depending on variant)

Screw terminals for dry contacts, configurable as input/output (0/5 VDC), pure opto-coupled 5V input or isolated voltage input (5–20 V). Depending on the variant, 20 or 40 additional dry contact channels are available.

3

BEB Connection to the Master

Instead of its own Ethernet port, the BEB unit has a BEB port that connects it to the BEB port of the SPX+ Master (or to another BEB unit in the chain). All communication runs over this connection – the BEB unit reports under the Master’s IP address.

4

Status Indicators

LED indicators provide information on power supply, network connection (of the parent Master) as well as the online and threshold status of the connected sensors.

5

Housing and Components

Like the entire SPX+ family, AKCP relies on highly integrated, power-saving SMD component technology for a long service life in continuous operation, with an MTBF of 1,400,000 hours based on field experience with sensorProbe devices.

6

Mounting

0U tool-less rack mounting, classic 1U rack mounting with mounting brackets or DIN rail mounting – the BEB unit can be placed directly next to or below the SPX+ Master in the same cabinet.

Interaction with the SPX+ Master

The BEB unit is not a standalone network device, but a pure hardware expansion of the SPX+ Master.

  • No own IP address, no own web interface – management is performed entirely via the SPX+ Master
  • Connection via the Master’s BEB port, recommended for use within the same cabinet
  • Maximum of 2 BEB units connectable per SPX+ Master
  • Maximum total length of the BEB cabling from the Master to the last unit: 18 meters
  • All sensors connected via BEB appear in the Master’s web interface and in SNMP/Modbus queries like locally connected sensors
💡

Practical example: An SPX+ Master with 4 sensor ports already monitors temperature and humidity in a server cabinet. If a BEB unit with 8 sensor ports and 20 dry contacts is additionally connected, further sensors as well as alarm contacts of neighboring devices can be recorded in the same cabinet – all still accessible via the Master’s single IP address, without additional network configuration.

Compatible with the Entire AKCP Sensor Portfolio

Since the BEB unit is integrated into the same sensorProbeX+ ecosystem via the Master, it can be combined with any AKCP intelligent sensor.

  • Environmental sensors such as temperature, humidity, airflow or air quality
  • Power sensors such as contactless current meters or battery condition sensors
  • Security sensors such as motion detectors, smoke detectors or vibration sensors
  • Smart sensors such as thermal map sensors, RFID swing-handle locks or programmable LCD displays

In total, an SPX+ Master including all connected BEB and EXP units as well as virtual sensors can manage up to 400 sensors online.

Part of a Fully SNMP-Capable Monitoring System

Via the SPX+ Master to which the BEB unit is connected, the expanded sensor and dry contact channels also benefit from the full functionality of the sensorProbeX+ platform.

SNMP v1/v2/v3

Fully SNMP-compliant for integration into existing network monitoring systems.

Modbus & BACnet

The Master’s EXP port serves optionally as a Modbus RS485 interface; optionally the system can be integrated into building automation systems via BACnet.

Notification Paths

Alarming via SNMP trap, e-mail, SMS as well as via the Master’s built-in signal buzzer.

Online Configuration Tool

The entire SPX+ system including BEB units can be assembled graphically via the AKCP online configuration tool and submitted for quotation.

Commissioning in a Few Steps

Integrating the BEB unit into an existing SPX+ system is straightforward.

  1. Select the appropriate BEB variant according to the desired expansion requirement
  2. Mount the BEB unit in the same cabinet as the SPX+ Master (0U, 1U or DIN rail)
  3. Connect the BEB unit via the BEB cable to the Master’s BEB port (max. total length 18 meters)
  4. Connect AKCP sensors to the additional sensor ports – automatic detection by AutoSense
  5. Optional: Connect dry-contact devices or alarm contacts to the additional I/O terminals
  6. New sensors and contacts appear automatically in the SPX+ Master’s web interface
