Nano Sensorics VocLess

The LoRaWAN sensor for VOC, temperature and humidity indoors

The Nano Sensorics VOCLESS is an indoor sensor for the complete measurement of volatile organic compounds (VOC), temperature and humidity. The sensor is housed in a room sensor enclosure, designed for wall mounting and operates fully wirelessly with 3.6 V AA lithium batteries. An integrated advanced intelligent (AI) calculation algorithm ensures reliable acquisition of the measured variables; data transmission is performed via a Class A LoRaWAN® radio network.

According to the manufacturer, the VOCLESS provides data for predicting environmental conditions and helps to optimise indoor air quality while minimising energy consumption. It is suitable for public and commercial buildings such as schools, university campuses, hospitals, government buildings and offices as well as for industrial facilities, warehouses and factories.

The VOCLESS is easy to set up and connect to the LoRaWAN radio network. Thanks to the integrated AI and correction algorithms, no additional manual calibration is required throughout the lifetime of the device.

VOC, temperature and humidity in one device

The VOCLESS simultaneously records the three most important parameters for a healthy indoor climate.

🧪

VOC measurement

Detection of volatile organic compounds on a VOC index scale from 1 to 500 points, with a repeatability of less than ±5 index points.

🌡️

Temperature measurement

Detection in the range from -10 °C to 70 °C with an accuracy of max. ±0.2 °C to ±0.3 °C depending on the temperature range.

💧

Humidity measurement

Detection from 0 to 100 % relative humidity (non-condensing).

🧠

AI calculation algorithm

Integrated intelligent algorithm with automatic adaptation to the respective indoor environment.

🔋

Battery life of up to 7 years

Operation via 2 AA lithium batteries, runtime depending on settings and environment.

How to understand the VOC index

The integrated AI algorithm of the VOCLESS evaluates the measured VOC values and automatically adapts its output to the respective indoor environment.

All VOC events are mapped onto an index scale from 1 to 500 points. The value 100 corresponds to the average indoor air composition of the past 24 hours. Values between 100 and 500 indicate a deterioration in air quality, while values between 1 and 100 indicate an improvement.

According to the manufacturer, ventilation is recommended from a VOC index above 100; above an index of 250, intensive ventilation and air purification of the indoor space is immediately required.

How the VOCLESS is designed

The compact room sensor housing measures 86 x 86 x 25.5 mm and weighs 85 g without batteries; according to the manufacturer, the design is deliberately such that it blends unobtrusively into the design of indoor spaces.

1

Housing

Robust plastic housing made of ABS UL94-V0, designed for permanent wall mounting indoors. The side ventilation slots must not be blocked or taped over, as they are required for air circulation to the sensor.

2

Battery compartment behind the rear cover

The rear cover of the housing is opened with a screwdriver. Underneath is the battery compartment for two AA lithium batteries of type ER14505 with 3.6 V.

3

Button and LED indicator

A button is used to restart the device and triggers an immediate connection attempt to the LoRaWAN network. The green LED indicates the connection status: After inserting the batteries or after a reset, it flashes for 15 seconds; if the connection is successful, it lights up continuously for 3 seconds and then goes out. The LED can additionally be switched on, off or toggled for 5 seconds via downlink command.

4

Mounting lugs

The rear cover has holes through which the sensor is fastened to the wall with two suitable screws.

5

Labeling

On the rear of the sensor there is a label with the sensor name, serial number, production date and QR code.

What VOC monitoring brings in operation

The manufacturer lists several concrete benefits that continuous VOC monitoring provides for building management systems (BMS).

  • Indoor air safety at a glance: BMS can monitor and control the effects of building materials, cleaning agents, furniture and occupancy intensity
  • Health and productivity: Warnings in the event of elevated VOC levels that can affect the health and productivity of users
  • Early HVAC fault detection: Indications of possible faults in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems based on changed environmental conditions
  • Analysis of HVAC effectiveness: Key figures on the effectiveness of the climate technology as a basis for noticeable energy savings
  • Automated adaptation: BMS systems can quickly adapt HVAC parameters in buildings, offices, warehouses or industrial facilities in order to maintain maximum effectiveness

Installation in a few steps

The installation manual describes the procedure from battery installation to network connection.

1

Open the housing

The rear cover of the sensor is opened with a screwdriver.

2

Insert the batteries

Two AA lithium batteries with 3.6 V are inserted into the battery compartment as shown in the manual.

3

Close the housing and mount

The rear cover is closed again and the housing is securely fastened to the wall with two suitable screws.

4

Check the network connection

After inserting the batteries or after pressing the button, the sensor automatically connects to the LoRaWAN network; the LED indicates the connection process.

5

Observe the mounting location

The sensor must not be placed near ventilation openings, windows or door openings with a constant supply of fresh air. The device is not suitable for outdoor use, nor for dusty or dirty environments with excessive operating temperatures.

💡

Note on establishing the connection: If the first connection is not successful, further automatic attempts follow after 10 seconds, 60 seconds, 10 minutes, 1 hour and finally every 24 hours until the connection is successfully established. Pressing the button restarts the sensor and immediately triggers a new connection attempt.

Factory-calibrated and maintenance-free

The VOCLESS is factory-calibrated. Thanks to the integrated intelligent calculation algorithms (AI) as well as automatic correction and index algorithms, the sensor remains maintenance-free in indoor environments throughout the lifetime of the device; according to the manufacturer, no additional manual calibration is required. Apart from occasional battery replacement, there is therefore no further maintenance effort.
