Power supply: Wall Plug Adaptor Series

The compact backup power supply for 12 V devices with power failure notification

The HW group UPS 12V is a backup power source for devices with 12 V DC supply. It delivers a stable output voltage of 12 V at up to 1.5 A and reports a failure of the external power supply via an integrated relay output. In terms of power supply, the UPS 12V is compatible with all HW group devices that are operated with 12 V power adapters.

In the IT sector, industry and households, an uninterruptible power supply is standard. For small devices such as monitoring systems, telephone systems (PBX) or controllers with a 12 V power adapter, however, there are hardly any suitable solutions, and a complex 230 V UPS is uneconomical for this purpose. This is where the UPS 12V comes in: it protects your device without significantly increasing the installation requirements.

From mains operation to battery operation

The UPS is supplied by the same 12 V power adapter that also powers the end device. In the event of a failure, the battery takes over.

  • In normal operation, the power adapter supplies the UPS and thus the connected device; the battery is charged
  • If the external power supply fails, the 12 V battery immediately takes over the supply
  • The Power IN LED goes out, the Power OUT LED remains lit
  • On the UPS 12V the signal relay opens at the same time (NO opens, NC closes)
  • The supplied device can report the failure or correctly terminate its activity
  • After the power supply returns, the relay closes again and the battery is charged
  • On the UPS 12V and 5V the 1-Wire UNI output reports battery voltage, battery current, the estimated operating time at the current load and the status of mains or battery operation
  • Each of these values occupies a sensor position in the connected device. Values that are not required can be disabled via the “1-Wire UNI USB Calibrator”

Connection and functional check

Commissioning is carried out in a few steps.

  1. Connect the 12 V / 1.5 A power adapter to the UPS. Both green LEDs light up
  2. Connect the device to be protected to the Power Out pin connector
  3. Optional: Connect the relay output (UPS 12V) or 1-Wire UNI output (UPS 12V and 5V) to the monitoring device
  4. Switch on the UPS at the main switch
  5. For a functional check, unplug the power adapter: the Power IN LED goes out, the Power OUT LED remains on
  6. If the UPS is switched off at the main switch, the Power OUT LED also goes out
