Risk of fire in the server cabinet

Risk of fire in the server cabinet

Your mission critical 19 inch server cabinet can be exposed to various risks. A possible risk in the IT rack that should not be underestimated is fire.
The causes of fire / fire can be very different:

Lack of maintenance of the existing UPS system

The batteries of the UPS system (uninterruptible power supply) must be checked regularly. If the battery packs of the UPS are swollen, they must be replaced immediately. The leakage of electrolyte / battery acid can lead to an electrical short circuit! Depending on the ambient conditions / environmental parameters prevailing in the server rack - keyword cabinet temperature - the lifespan of the UPS Battery can be drastically shortened. Most of the UPS manufacturers specify an ambient temperature of +20 degrees Celsius, which is not prevalent in many server cabinets. Also, an overheated UPS represents a not to be underestimated fire danger in the cabinet.

Technical defect

Every electrical device in the 19 inch server cabinet carries a potential fire hazard. Common causes of fire in the server cabinet are defective components and power supplies.

Insufficient cooling in server rack

If the IT rack is not cooled sufficiently, the installed network, storage and server equipment may overheat. Heat can be known to cause fire.

Man-Made risks

Even by human hands, fire can be kindled. The classic is the smoking in the EDP & server room. There are sufficient cases of intentional or negligent arson. Even flammable work direct or in the vicinty of the server room can be a cause of fire.

Early detection of risks using sensors

By installing suitable sensors and SNMP driven alarm systems, risks and threats in the server enclosure can be detected and reported at an very early stage. Temperature sensors installed in the server cabinet detect overtemperature and heat. SNMP driven humidity sensors measure the realtive humidity (rH) in the rack and serve the detection of risks such as impending electrostatic discharge (ESD) or dewpoint formation.

Suitable water sensors and water leak sensing cables detect leakage of battery acid from bloated UPS batteries. By installing a smoke detector, a multi sensor or thermal fire detector in the 19-inch server cabinet, the emergence of smoldering fire can also be detected early.

Proven Alarm systems and sensors for your server rack

An proven alarm system, in the form of Didactum's IP-based stand-alone monitoring system 100 III, 500 II (DC), will send relaible notifications and alerts in the form of SNMP traps, e-mail or SMS (via GSM or LTE modem). The alarm right out of the server cabinet can also signaled by optionally available sirens and flashing lights. At the same time, the alert can also be forwarded to the building management system via relay switching. All measurement data, status changes and events are recorded in the syslog of the SNMP enabled hazard alarm system, including date and exact time. With SNMP command you can also switch off the power supply of the electrical consumers connected to an PDU power strip.
