The Robust 2-Wire Video Door Intercom with Keypad
The Akuvox AV-R20K-2 is a compact SIP video door intercom with an aluminium front panel and integrated keypad, specifically designed for retrofitting existing 2-wire cabling. Many residential and office buildings still have older 2-wire wiring from analog intercom systems, the replacement of which would be complex. The AV-R20K-2 makes this existing cabling usable to operate a modern, IP-based SIP intercom system – without having to lay any new cables. According to the manufacturer, it is typically used for retrofitting residential and office buildings and is space-saving as well as certified for outdoor use.
A single 2-core cable simultaneously provides power and network connectivity. To integrate it into an IP network, the 2-wire cabling is connected to the rest of the network via a suitable Akuvox 2-wire switch or adapter (e.g. NS-2 or NC-2). There is no classic Ethernet port or Wi-Fi on the door station itself.
The integrated keypad allows secure PIN entry directly at the door – in addition to the 2-megapixel Full HD camera with infrared night vision, a card reader, and the weatherproof IP65 housing.
Video, Audio and Access over 2 Wires
The AV-R20K-2 combines all the essential functions of a professional door intercom in a compact, robust housing.
Full HD Camera with IR LED
2-megapixel camera with infrared supplementary lighting for a clear image even at night.
2-Wire Connection
Power and network over a single 2-core cable, ideal for retrofitting.
Keypad
Physical keyboard for PIN entry directly at the door station.
Dual Audio with Anti-Echo
Clear, lag-free conversations thanks to echo cancellation and noise filtering.
SmartPlus App
Call answering, live image and door opening on the go via smartphone.
How the AV-R20K-2 Is Built
The housing of the AV-R20K-2 is deliberately kept narrow so that the device can also be installed in tight wall niches or next to door frames.
Aluminium Front Panel
The front is made of robust aluminium instead of plastic, giving the device additional mechanical stability for continuous use.
Camera Section with Night Vision
Camera lens with a field of view of 110° horizontal and 58° vertical, supplemented by infrared LEDs, a light sensor and an infrared sensor for detecting activity in front of the door.
Keypad with Card Reader
Below the camera is the illuminated keypad for PIN entry, supplemented by an integrated card reader for 13.56 MHz cards.
Microphone and Speaker
A discreetly installed microphone and speaker handle the voice connection with dual-audio and anti-echo technology.
2-Wire Connector on the Rear
On the rear are the 2-wire connector for power and network, a relay output, an input, as well as interfaces for Wiegand and RS485 for connecting external access components.
Mounting Type and Tamper Protection
The housing can be mounted either flush or surface-mounted and is equipped with a tamper alarm against forced removal.
Flexible Ways to Open the Door
Depending on the use case, the AV-R20K-2 can be used in different ways for access control. According to the manufacturer, the door station even supports combined release by card and PIN.
- Release via a connected indoor video station in the building
- Presenting a 13.56 MHz card at the integrated reader
- PIN entry via the keypad
- Remote opening via the Akuvox SmartPlus app, even while on the go
Practical example: An existing building with old 2-wire cabling receives a modern video door intercom without any new cabling. Residents open the door either by card, PIN code or smartphone app, while visitors ring the doorbell as usual and are received via video.
Reliable Images Even in the Dark
The camera of the AV-R20K-2 is permanently active and automatically adapts to the lighting conditions.
- Camera permanently in operation – no manual wake-up required
- Infrared LEDs for recordings in complete darkness
- Automatic white balance for natural color reproduction
- Minimum illumination of 0.1 lux for recordings in very low light
- Multi-Way Unlock: combined release by card and PIN possible
- Infrared sensor and tamper alarm for additional security
Integration into Existing Systems
The AV-R20K-2 is designed as an open SIP device and can be used both standalone and in larger access control and video environments.
SIP
Direct integration into IP telephone systems and SIP-capable endpoints.
ONVIF
Connection of the camera image to common video management and surveillance systems.
Wiegand & RS485
Connection of external access readers or serial third-party devices via two open interfaces.
Capacity
Locally up to 4,000 users, 1,000 contacts, 20,000 cards and 4,000 PIN codes manageable.
The integrated NFC reader for door opening via smartphone (instead of a card) only works with Android devices according to the manufacturer. iPhone users open the door instead via the Akuvox SmartPlus app, by card or by PIN entry on the keypad.
Maintenance and Operation from Afar
For professional operation and remote maintenance, the AV-R20K-2 offers several administrative functions.
- Auto-provisioning for automated initial setup
- Management via a web-based management portal
- Web-based packet dump for network diagnostics
- Backup and restore of the configuration
- Export of access logs (Entry Logs)
- Export and import of access tables
- Firmware updates via the web interface
- System logs including door access logs
Robustly Built for Continuous Use
As a door station, the AV-R20K-2 is exposed to the elements and potential sabotage – the design is accordingly engineered for continuous operation.
- Aluminium front panel for additional mechanical robustness
- IP65 protection rating against dust and water jets, certified by the manufacturer for outdoor use
- Integrated tamper alarm in case of forced removal
- Infrared sensor for additional environmental detection
Commissioning in Just a Few Steps
Setting up the AV-R20K-2 can be completed quickly even when retrofitting.
- Decide on mounting type: flush or surface-mounted
- Connect the door station to the existing 2-wire cabling
- Connect the 2-wire cabling to the IP network via a suitable Akuvox 2-wire switch or adapter
- Perform basic setup via the door station’s web interface
- Install the Akuvox SmartPlus app on the smartphone and link the device
- Optional: Enroll cards and PIN codes as well as wire the relay/input for the door opener
