Power supply for CAN devices 12V/1A

Additional Power Supply for Long CAN-Bus Chains

The Didactum power supply for CAN devices 12V/1A is required as soon as a CAN-Bus chain consists of more than 12 sensors or expansion units. The reason for this is the voltage drop along the CAN-Bus cable: the more devices connected in series, the more the available voltage drops at the end of the chain. The CAN-12V-1A feeds new energy into the bus at exactly this point and thus reliably supplies the next group of up to 12 CAN devices with power.

The module is looped directly into the CAN-Bus chain and is itself daisy-chain capable: it can therefore be placed at any point between two sensor groups. In total, depending on the system configuration, 10 to 32 CAN devices can be operated in a single chain, with a maximum of 24 sensors per chain recommended.

Commissioning is carried out without additional software: after looping into the chain and correctly setting the TR switches, the new device group is simply detected and integrated via the CAN-Bus configuration of the Didactum monitoring system.

When is the additional power supply required?

An additional power supply is only relevant for larger CAN-Bus chains – it is not required for smaller installations.

If even more devices are needed, another CAN-12V-1A module can be inserted at a suitable point in the chain – the procedure for connecting is identical.

Module structure at a glance

The housing is deliberately kept simple and has four central elements that are relevant for connection and status monitoring.

1

Power 12V DC

Connection for the supplied 12V DC plug-in power supply, which supplies power to the module.

2

INPUT Port

Connected to the sensor group that is closer to the main monitoring unit.

3

OUTPUT Port

Connected to the more distant, additional sensor group that is newly supplied by the module.

4

Status LED (green)

Lights up green as soon as the module is connected and working properly.

⚠️

Important note: INPUT and OUTPUT ports must not be mixed up. If CAN sensors are connected to the wrong port, this can damage the CAN-Bus line. Please read the connection steps completely before putting the module into operation.

Correctly looping the module into the CAN-Bus chain

In the following example, a first sensor group (Group 1) is already connected to the monitoring unit. The CAN-12V-1A is required as soon as a total of more than 12 sensors are to be operated.

1

Supply module with power

Connect the CAN-12V-1A to a power socket using the supplied power supply. The green status LED must light up.

2

Connect second sensor group

Connect all further sensors (Group 2) to the OUTPUT port of the CAN-12V-1A. Group 2 should not comprise more than 15 sensors connected in series.

3

Check status of all sensors

All sensors must switch on. If individual sensors do not respond, reduce the number of sensors connected to Group 2 and check the status again.

4

Connect first group to the module

Connect the last sensor of Group 1 to the INPUT port of the CAN-12V-1A.

5

Set TR switches

Set the TR switch of the last sensor in Group 1 to "OFF". Set the TR switch of the last sensor in Group 2 to "ON".

6

Configure CAN-Bus

Then start the CAN-Bus configuration in the web interface of the monitoring system so that the new sensor group is detected.

If even more sensors are required, another CAN-12V-1A module can be added in the chain. The connection steps are identical.

Operating status at a glance

The green status LED on the front of the module indicates that the CAN-12V-1A is being supplied with power and is working properly. If the LED does not light up, the power supply and the secure fit of the power supply plug (⌀3.4/1.35 mm) should be checked first.

Use in the Didactum system

The CAN-12V-1A is not an independent monitoring device, but a pure supply component for the CAN-Bus.

ℹ️

The module cannot be operated independently and does not itself provide any sensor or measurement values. It is always used together with a Didactum monitoring system with one or two CAN-Bus ports and the CAN sensors or expansion units connected to it.

CAN Sensors

e.g. combination sensors for smoke, temperature and humidity on the CAN-Bus.

Analog Expansion Units

Each expansion unit adds further analog sensor ports via the CAN-Bus.

Dry-Contact Expansions

Expansions for additional potential-free contacts via the CAN-Bus.

Didactum Monitoring System 50T etc.

Is integrated into the chain at a free CAN-Bus port of the monitoring system.

Application areas of the additional power supply

The CAN-12V-1A is used wherever extensive CAN-Bus installations with many sensors or expansion units are operated.

  • Large server rooms and data centers with numerous distributed climate sensors
  • Industrial plants with long CAN-Bus chains across several control cabinets
  • Storage and logistics centers with many distributed temperature and humidity sensors
  • Building complexes with central monitoring of several technical rooms
  • Telecommunications sites with extensive sensor technology at one location
  • Retrofitting existing Didactum installations with growing sensor requirements

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need the CAN-12V-1A?

An additional power supply is only required if more than 12 CAN devices (sensors and expansions) are to be operated in one CAN-Bus chain. It is not required for smaller installations.

How many additional CAN devices can one module supply?

One CAN-12V-1A module supplies an additional group of up to 12 CAN devices with power. If even more devices are required, another module can be inserted at a suitable point in the chain.

What happens if INPUT and OUTPUT are mixed up?

If CAN sensors are connected to the wrong port, this can damage the CAN-Bus line. The INPUT port must always point towards the main monitoring unit, the OUTPUT port towards the more distant sensor group.

How are the TR switches set when looping in the module?

The TR switch of the last sensor in the first group (closer to the monitoring unit) is set to "OFF". The TR switch of the last sensor in the second, newly connected group is set to "ON".

Does the CAN-12V-1A provide measurement values itself?

No. The CAN-12V-1A is a pure supply module for the CAN-Bus and does not provide its own sensor or measurement values. It is only used together with a Didactum monitoring system and CAN sensors or expansion units connected to it.

How do I know if the module is working correctly?

The green status LED on the front lights up as soon as the module is supplied with power and is working properly. If the LED does not light up, the power supply and the fit of the power supply plug should be checked.
