Precise Climate and Pressure Monitoring in the CAN Bus Network
The Didactum CAN sensor for temperature, humidity, and pressure is a high-quality 3-in-1 sensor with an attractive price-performance ratio. By connecting multiple sensors in a CAN daisy chain, temperature, humidity, and pressure values can be measured at any desired location in a room, data center, or cleanroom.
Each measured parameter - pressure, humidity, and temperature - is displayed as a separate element in the Didactum web interface. This makes it possible to define individual threshold values and trigger events such as notifications or other actions. A key feature is the automatic calculation of the dew point based on the recorded temperature and humidity values - essential for avoiding condensation problems in sensitive areas such as data centers, cleanrooms, or archives.
As a robust CAN bus sensor, the sensor supports daisy-chaining with other CAN devices. Depending on the system configuration, 10 to 32 CAN units can be connected in a single CAN bus chain, enabling high scalability.
Sensor Design at a Glance
The sensor has four key elements that are relevant for installation, wiring, and status checking.
Status LEDs (RUN/ERR)
The green "RUN" LED indicates that the sensor is correctly connected to the main module. The red "ERR" LED (Error) lights up when the connection to the main module has been interrupted.
Pressure, Humidity & Temperature Sensing Element
The sensing element is located outside the housing to achieve higher measurement accuracy and precision.
TR Switch
Must be set to "ON" (down) when the sensor is the last device in the CAN bus chain. Otherwise, the switch remains on "OFF" (up).
CAN Connections
Two equivalent digital RJ11-6P4C ports with auto-sensing for connection to the main module, other CAN sensors, or CAN expansions.
Correctly Setting the TR Switch
The TR switch ensures proper termination of the CAN bus chain and must be configured differently depending on the sensor's position within the chain.
- Single sensor: If only one CAN sensor is connected to the main module, this sensor is both the only and the last device in the chain. The TR switch must be set to "ON" (down).
- Sensor in the middle of the chain: If multiple sensors or modules are connected via the CAN bus and the sensor is not at the end of the chain, the TR switch must be set to "OFF" (up).
- Last sensor in the chain: If the sensor is at the end of a chain with multiple devices, the TR switch must be set to "ON" (down).
Rule of thumb: Only the final device at the end of the CAN bus chain requires termination set to "ON". All devices before it, or in the middle of the chain, remain on "OFF".
Measurement Accuracy for Pressure, Humidity, and Temperature
The sensor simultaneously captures three environmental parameters - each with its own specified measurement accuracy.
In addition to pressure accuracy, a pressure RMS noise of 0.2 Pa (equivalent to approx. 1.7 cm) and a temperature-related pressure error of ±1.5 Pa/K (equivalent to approx. ±12.6 cm for a 1 °C temperature change) are specified. The humidity measurement hysteresis is ≤2 % RH. The sensor covers a pressure range of 300 to 1100 hPa as well as an operating range of -40 °C to +85 °C and 0 to 95 % RH.
Application Areas of the Sensor
The Didactum CAN sensor for temperature, humidity, and pressure is suitable for many areas where all three environmental parameters are relevant at the same time.
- Data centers: Temperature, pressure, and humidity monitoring help prevent overheating, condensation, and overpressure, protecting servers
- Cleanrooms and laboratories: Precise climate monitoring is essential for quality assurance in research, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductor manufacturing
- Industrial automation: Environmental monitoring protects machines and systems from harmful environmental influences and helps optimize processes
- HVAC systems: Real-time environmental monitoring provides the basis for efficient control of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
- Agriculture & greenhouses: Climate monitoring ensures optimal growing conditions through accurate tracking of temperature, humidity, and pressure
- Warehousing and logistics: Protection of temperature-sensitive goods such as food, medicine, or artwork through real-time data and alarms
- Museums and archives: Climate monitoring protects valuable exhibits and documents from damage caused by incorrect temperature or humidity levels
- Building management: Central control and optimization of indoor climate in office buildings, hotels, or schools
Functions in the Web Interface
Logic Schemas
Automated actions when thresholds are exceeded, e.g. activating ventilation or sending an alert.
Dashboard View
Clear display of all measured values for uninterrupted monitoring and fast response.
Thresholds
Individually adjustable for temperature, humidity, and pressure: Low Alarm, Low Warning, Normal, High Warning, High Alarm.
Logging
SD card logging up to 500 GB for trend analysis and documentation requirements.
Dew Point Calculation
Automatic calculation from temperature and humidity values to prevent condensation.
Separate Elements
Pressure, humidity, and temperature are displayed as separate, individually configurable elements.
Connecting CAN Sensors
Up to 32 CAN units can be connected in a CAN bus chain, making the Didactum system highly modular. Each connected CAN sensor expansion unit provides additional analog ports, while CAN dry contact expansions provide additional potential-free contact inputs. Whether you use just a single sensor or a complex network of multiple CAN bus sensors and other CAN devices, the system adapts flexibly to your requirements.
The sensor is powered directly via the CAN bus chain (12V DC, max. 1 watt), so no separate wiring is required. An additional CAN power supply (12V/1A) is only needed when the number of CAN devices in the chain exceeds 12. The maximum distance to the monitoring unit is 225 m.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set the TR switch correctly?
If the sensor is the only or the last device in the CAN bus chain, the TR switch must be set to "ON" (down). If the sensor is in the middle of a chain with multiple devices, the switch must be set to "OFF" (up). Only the last device at the end of the chain is terminated.
What do the "RUN" and "ERR" LEDs mean?
The green "RUN" LED indicates that the sensor is correctly connected to the main module. If the red "ERR" LED lights up instead, the sensor has lost connection to the main module - in this case, check the CAN bus wiring and termination.
How many sensors can be combined in one CAN bus chain?
Depending on the system configuration, 10 to 32 CAN devices can be connected in a single chain. An additional CAN power supply (12V/1A) is only required if the number of CAN devices in the chain exceeds 12.
What accuracy does the sensor have for pressure, humidity, and temperature?
Temperature accuracy is ±1.5 °C, humidity accuracy is ±3 % RH (max.) with hysteresis of ≤2 % RH. Pressure error is ±0.25 % (equivalent to about 1 m at 400 m altitude change), and pressure RMS noise is 0.2 Pa. The sensor covers a pressure range of 300 to 1100 hPa as well as an operating range of -40 °C to +85 °C and 0 to 95 % RH.
How is the dew point calculated?
The dew point is calculated automatically in the Didactum web interface from the sensor's recorded temperature and humidity values and displayed as a separate element. No manual calculation or additional hardware is required.
Which connections does the sensor have?
The sensor has two equivalent digital RJ11-6P4C ports with auto-sensing. These allow connection to the main module as well as to other CAN sensors or CAN expansions in a daisy chain. Power is supplied directly via the CAN bus, so no separate power supply is required.
