Precise climate monitoring in a CAN bus network
The Didactum humidity and temperature CAN sensor is a high-quality humidity and temperature sensor with an attractive price-performance ratio. By connecting multiple humidity and temperature sensors in a CAN daisy chain, temperature and humidity values can be measured at any location in a room or server cabinet.
Each environmental parameter of the sensor is displayed as a separate element in the Didactum web interface. This makes it possible to define individual threshold values and trigger events such as notifications or other actions. A key feature is the automatic calculation of the dew point based on the captured temperature and humidity values - essential for avoiding condensation problems in sensitive areas such as data centers, production facilities, or warehouses.
As a robust CAN bus environmental sensor, the sensor supports daisy chaining with other CAN devices. Depending on the system configuration, 10 to 32 CAN units can be connected in a single CAN bus chain, which enables high scalability.
Sensor structure at a glance
The sensor has four key elements that are relevant for installation, wiring, and status checks.
Status LEDs (RUN/ERR)
The green "RUN" LED indicates that the sensor is correctly connected to the monitoring system. The red "ERR" LED lights up when the connection to the main module has been interrupted.
Humidity and temperature sensing element
Continuously measures relative humidity and ambient temperature at the installation site.
TR switch
Termination switch for the CAN bus. It must be set to "ON" (down) when the sensor is the last device in the CAN bus chain.
CAN connections
Two equivalent digital RJ11-6P4C ports with auto-sensing for connection to the main module, additional CAN sensors, or CAN expansions.
Setting the TR switch correctly
The TR switch ensures proper termination of the CAN bus chain and must be set differently depending on the sensor's position within the chain.
- Single sensor: If only one CAN sensor is connected to the main module, that sensor is also the only and last device in the chain. The TR switch must be set to "ON" (down).
- Sensor in the middle of the chain: If multiple sensors or modules are connected via the CAN bus and the sensor is not at the end of the chain, the TR switch must be set to "OFF" (up).
- Last sensor in the chain: If the sensor is at the end of a chain made up of multiple devices, the TR switch must be set to "ON" (down).
Rule of thumb: Only the last device at the end of the CAN bus chain requires termination set to "ON". All devices before it or in the middle of the chain remain set to "OFF".
Measurement accuracy and operating temperature range
For this sensor, it is important to distinguish between the range of guaranteed measurement accuracy and the much wider operating temperature range of the housing.
The sensor itself is designed for use in a very wide temperature and humidity range (−40 °C to +100 °C, 0 to 95% RH). The stated measurement accuracy of ±0.4 °C and ±3% RH applies to the narrower range of −10 °C to 85 °C and 0–80% RH, where values are captured with maximum precision.
Sensor applications
The Didactum humidity and temperature CAN sensor serves as an industrial CAN climate sensor and is suitable for numerous applications.
- Telecommunications stations: Continuous monitoring at remote sites prevents device failures due to overheating or moisture
- Energy facilities: Precise environmental monitoring in power plants contributes to operational safety and efficiency
- Cheese storage: Exact humidity and temperature conditions ensure product quality through real-time data and alarms
- Greenhouses: Monitoring air temperature and relative humidity supports automated climate control systems
- Data centers: Monitoring critical parameters prevents outages by maintaining safe operating conditions
- Industrial facilities: Early detection of anomalies minimizes the risk of downtime in production systems
- Warehouses: Protect goods from moisture damage or mold growth through controlled environmental conditions
- Pharmaceutical storage: Precise climate control to comply with storage requirements for medicines and vaccines
Functions in the web interface
Logic diagrams
Automatic actions based on sensor data, e.g. activate cooling or send an alarm.
Dashboard view
Individually customizable overview with multi-graphs, gauges, and dials.
Threshold values
Five states: Low alarm, Low warning, Normal, High warning, High alarm.
Charts and logging
SD card logging up to 500 GB for trend analysis and compliance documentation.
Dew point calculation
Automatic calculation from temperature and humidity values to prevent condensation.
Separate elements
Temperature and humidity are shown as separate, individually configurable elements.
Connecting CAN sensors
Up to 32 CAN units can be connected in a CAN bus chain, making the Didactum system highly modular. Each connected CAN sensor expansion unit provides additional analog ports, while CAN dry-contact expansions provide additional floating contact inputs. Whether you use just a single sensor or a complex network of multiple CAN bus sensors and other CAN devices, the system adapts flexibly to your requirements.
An additional CAN power supply (12V/1A) is only required when the number of CAN devices in the chain exceeds 12.

Frequently asked questions
How do I set the TR switch correctly?
If the sensor is the only or last device in the CAN bus chain, the TR switch must be set to "ON" (down). If the sensor is in the middle of a chain with multiple devices, the switch must be set to "OFF" (up). Only the last device at the end of the chain is terminated.
What do the "RUN" and "ERR" LEDs mean?
The green "RUN" LED indicates that the sensor is correctly connected to the main module. If the red "ERR" LED lights up instead, the sensor has lost the connection to the main module - in this case, check the CAN bus wiring and termination.
How many sensors can be combined in a CAN bus chain?
Depending on the system configuration, 10 to 32 CAN devices can be connected in a single chain. An additional CAN power supply (12V/1A) is only required if the number of CAN devices in the chain exceeds 12.
Which temperature and humidity range is covered by the accuracy specification?
The stated accuracy of ±0.4 °C and ±3% RH applies in the range of −10 °C to 85 °C and 0–80% RH. The sensor housing itself is designed for a much wider operating range of −40 °C to +100 °C and 0–95% RH.
How is the dew point calculated?
The dew point is automatically calculated in the Didactum web interface from the sensor's recorded temperature and humidity values and displayed as a separate element. No manual calculation or additional hardware is required.
Which connections does the sensor have?
The sensor has two equivalent digital RJ11-6P4C ports with auto-sensing. These can be used to connect it to the main module as well as to additional CAN sensors or CAN expansions in a daisy chain.
