The modularly expandable video door intercom with facial recognition
The Akuvox AV-S535 is a SIP video door intercom with an aluminum front panel and 5-inch touchscreen, which Akuvox itself positions as a next-generation platform with a modular architecture. The manufacturer describes the device as flexibly adaptable to a wide range of use cases – from residential complexes and apartment buildings to office buildings and commercial properties, all the way to industrial sites. At its core is facial recognition, complemented by an IPS display with 720x1280 pixels running under Linux as the operating system.
Modular concept: Unlike many classic door stations, the AV-S535 is, according to the manufacturer, deliberately designed for expandability. The base unit can be extended with function modules, for example for fingerprint recognition, mobile network connectivity (LTE) at locations without network cabling, an induction loop for hearing aid users, or a QR code scanner. This modularity makes it possible to adapt one and the same base station to different structural and functional requirements without having to replace the device entirely.
Door release can be carried out via facial recognition, the integrated card or NFC reader, PIN code entry, Bluetooth (BLE), or QR code – the release methods can be combined depending on the property.
Access, video and audio in one device
The AV-S535 combines facial recognition, video communication, and multiple access methods in one robust aluminum housing.
Facial recognition
Recognition speed under 200 ms with a recognition accuracy of 99.7%.
Dual camera
Main and secondary camera, each 2 megapixels with automatic light adjustment, field of view 116°(H)/62°(V).
5-inch touchscreen
IPS display with 720x1280 pixels for the user interface, video image, and visitor guidance.
RF & NFC reader
Integrated reader for 13.56 MHz and 125 kHz cards as well as NFC.
Expandable via module
Optional function modules for fingerprint, LTE, induction loop, or QR scanner.
How the AV-S535 is built
The housing of the AV-S535 is designed as a closed aluminum unit with clearly organized functional areas. From top to bottom, the device can be divided into the following sections:
Camera section with dual camera
In the upper area sit the main camera and a second, independent secondary camera (each 2 megapixels, automatic light adjustment). This dual-camera arrangement typically serves more reliable capture from different angles or lighting conditions during facial recognition. The optics are complemented by a light sensor, a motion sensor, and separate infrared and white-light LEDs.
5-inch touchscreen
Centrally located in the housing is the 5-inch IPS display with 720x1280 pixels. Video calls, visitor display, PIN entry, and operation of the integrated directory all run via the touchscreen.
Card and NFC reader
Below the display is the RF reader for 13.56 MHz (including MIFARE, DESFire, Felica) and 125 kHz cards (EM), as well as NFC for door release via a compatible smartphone.
Microphone and speaker
A discreetly installed microphone and speaker handle two-way voice communication, including echo cancellation.
Expansion area for function modules
The AV-S535 is structurally prepared for the installation of an additional module. Depending on the requirement, a fingerprint, LTE, induction loop, or QR scanner module can be integrated here without changing the station's basic function.
Connections on the rear
On the rear are the Ethernet connection with Power over Ethernet (802.3at), an additional 12 V/500 mA power output for supplying external small devices, a relay output for the door opener, two inputs, as well as interfaces for Wiegand (input/output selectable) and RS485.
Housing, mounting, and tamper protection
The front panel is made of aluminum, and the overall housing is protected to IP66 against dust and jetting water as well as to IK08 against mechanical impact. Mounting can be either flush-mounted (flush-mount enclosure) or surface-mounted (surface-mount enclosure); a tamper alarm reports forced removal attempts.
Five ways to open the door
The AV-S535 combines classic and biometric access methods in one device.
- Facial recognition directly via the integrated dual camera
- Presenting an EM, MIFARE, DESFire, or Felica card at the RF reader
- Entering a personal PIN code on the touchscreen
- Release via Bluetooth (BLE) using a paired smartphone
- Scanning a QR code, for example for time-limited visitor access
Practical example: A resident approaches the entrance of a residential complex. The AV-S535 recognizes the face in under 200 ms and opens the door automatically, without a card or PIN code being necessary. A visitor without a stored face instead receives a time-limited QR code from the resident and scans it at the device.
Reliable recognition in any lighting condition
The camera of the AV-S535 is permanently active and automatically adapts to changing lighting conditions.
- Camera permanently in operation, no manual wake-up required
- Infrared LEDs and an additional white-light LED for recording in darkness
- Automatic white balance for natural color reproduction
- Minimum illumination of 0.1 lux for recording in very low light
- Facial recognition in under 200 ms with 99.7% recognition accuracy
- Relay output can be individually controlled via DTMF tones
- Motion sensor, light sensor, and tamper alarm for additional security
Integration into existing systems
The AV-S535 is designed as an open SIP and ONVIF device and can be used both standalone and within larger access and video environments.
SIP
Direct integration into IP telephone systems and SIP-capable endpoints.
ONVIF
Connection of the camera feed to common video management and surveillance systems, including third-party network video recorders (NVRs).
Wiegand & RS485
The Wiegand port can be operated as either an input or output; external access readers or third-party devices can be connected via this and via RS485.
ACMS / SDMC
Central management of multiple Akuvox devices via the manufacturer's own management platforms, ideal for multiple locations or access points.
For voice transmission, the AV-S535 uses the SIP versions v1 (RFC2543) and v2 (RFC3261) as well as the audio codecs G.711a, G.711µ, and G.722, complemented by echo cancellation, voice activity detection, and a comfort noise generator. On the network side, the device supports, among others, IPv4, HTTP(S), FTP, DNS, NTP, RTSP, RTP, TCP, UDP, ICMP, DHCP, and ARP. The camera delivers video streams in H.264 with resolutions from CIF up to 1080p.
Modular architecture for changing requirements
According to Akuvox, what makes the AV-S535 special is its targeted expandability via function modules, which extend the range of use of the base station without having to replace the device.
- Fingerprint module for additional biometric recognition (up to 20,000 fingerprint templates)
- LTE module for mobile network connectivity at locations without fixed network cabling
- Induction loop module for improved voice transmission for hearing aid users
- QR scanner module for access release via common barcode and QR code formats
Matching mounting accessories are available for both the base version and the variant with a built-in function module: for both device versions, Akuvox offers its own flush-mount and surface-mount enclosures as well as rain shields, since the module slightly changes the station's overall depth.
Also designed for many users on a standalone basis
The AV-S535 can manage access data locally on the device even entirely without central management software.
Up to 20,000 users
Local user and contact management directly on the device, each with up to 20,000 entries.
