Didactum Expansion Unit 32xDI (CAN)

Up to 64 potential-free contacts per CAN bus expansion

The Didactum Dry Contact Expansion Unit is a CAN bus expansion module specially developed for Didactum high-end monitoring systems. It was designed to make existing systems with alarm and switching contacts IP-based monitorable as part of the convergence of building technology and IT. Each unit provides 32 additional inputs for potential-free contacts in the standard version, connected via a 2-wire signal cable and monitored around the clock over the network or the internet.

The unit is connected via the included RJ12 patch cable to one of the two CAN bus ports of a Didactum Monitoring System (for example, 50T, 100T, 300T, 500T or 550T) and is automatically detected. In the integrated web server of the monitoring system, each individual contact can be named separately, assigned its own normal state (NO/NC), and linked to custom alarm rules or actions - for example, sending an SNMP trap or an SMS notification in the event of a fault.

Customers who require a higher total number of contacts can expand the unit with the optional "Dry Contacts Board" to a total of 64 potential-free contacts. Up to 8 units can also be chained per CAN bus branch, making it possible to centrally monitor even very large infrastructures with extensive alarm technology in an IP-based way.

The unit is factory-fitted with the additional "Dry Contacts Board" and therefore has 64 potential-free contact inputs right away.

Scalability in detail

Up to 8 Dry Contact Expansion Units can be chained per CAN bus branch of a Didactum Monitoring System. In combination with the 64-contact version, this results in up to 512 potential-free contacts on a single CAN bus branch - ideal for data centers, building complexes, or industrial plants with extensive alarm technology. Since Didactum Monitoring Systems typically have two CAN bus ports, this number can be doubled if needed.

Contacts per unit32 (standard), 64 (with board)
Max. units per CAN branch8
Max. CAN bus length225 m
Power consumption1 watt

An additional CAN power supply (CAN-12V-1A) is recommended as soon as several units are operated in a long chain, to ensure reliable power supply for all devices on the CAN bus.

Power supply and stability

The Dry Contact Expansion Unit requires only 1 watt of power and is supplied directly via the CAN bus by the connected Didactum Monitoring System - a separate power supply is usually not necessary. For larger installations with several daisy-chained units or long CAN bus chains, the additional CAN-12V-1A power supply is recommended; it is integrated directly into the CAN bus line and reliably powers all downstream devices. Without this additional power supply, voltage may drop too much in long chains or with many connected units, which can lead to unstable operation.

Flexible mounting options

The expansion unit can be mounted in three different ways depending on the installation site.

19-inch rack mounting

Mounting in a 19-inch server rack is possible, ideal for central integration with the monitoring system.

Desktop mounting

Standalone operation on a desk or in a technical cabinet.

Wall mounting

Fixed installation directly on the wall in close proximity to the system being monitored.

Setup in just a few steps

Commissioning is performed without additional software directly through the monitoring system's web front end.

  1. Connect the Dry Contact Expansion Unit to one of the two CAN bus ports of the monitoring system using the included RJ12 patch cable (2 m).
  2. Set the TR termination switch: "ON" for the last unit in the chain; for chains longer than 10 m, set it to "OFF"; leave the "FR" DIP switch permanently set to "OFF".
  3. For multiple units or long chains, optionally integrate the CAN-12V-1A power supply into the CAN bus line.
  4. Connect the potential-free contacts of the monitored systems to terminal points 1-32 (or 33-64 with board) using a 2-wire signal cable.
  5. In the web interface of the Didactum Monitoring System, access the expansion unit and the automatically detected contacts.
  6. Assign each contact individually, define the normal state (NO/NC), and configure the desired alarms or actions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Dry Contact Expansion Unit and what is it used for?

The Dry Contact Expansion Unit increases the number of potential-free contacts that can be connected to a Didactum Monitoring System. Each unit provides 32 additional digital contact inputs and is suitable for IP-based remote monitoring of alarm and switching contacts in server rooms, building technology, and industrial plants.

How many contacts does the unit support and how can it be expanded?

In the standard version, the unit offers 32 inputs for potential-free or digital contacts. With the optional "Dry Contacts Board," this number can be increased to up to 64 contacts per unit. This expansion can be ordered directly via the "Includes 64 dry contacts" option or retrofitted at the factory on request.

How is the unit connected to the monitoring system?

Thanks to CAN bus support in Didactum IP alarm systems, the unit is simply connected to one of the two CAN bus ports of the main module. A 2 m RJ12 patch cable is included. Up to 8 units can be daisy-chained per CAN bus branch, with each branch reaching a total length of up to 225 m.

What does the TR termination switch do?

The TR switch terminates the CAN dry contact unit and helps prevent interference on the CAN bus. The last unit in a serial CAN bus chain should always be terminated (TR "ON"); for chains over 10 m, the terminator on the last unit should be set to "OFF". The separate "FR" DIP switch is for programming purposes only and must remain permanently set to "OFF" because otherwise the module switches itself off.

How are the individual contacts configured in the system?

Once the unit is connected, all contacts are automatically detected (autosense) and displayed in the Didactum Monitoring System web interface. There, each contact can be named individually (for example, "UPS system 1" or "server room door"), the normal state (NO/NC) can be defined, and custom alarms or actions can be configured - such as an SNMP trap or an SMS notification in the event of air conditioning failure.

Which Didactum Monitoring Systems is the unit compatible with?

The Dry Contact Expansion Unit can be connected to any Didactum Monitoring System with a CAN bus port, including the 50T, 100T, 300T, 500T and 550T models, as well as compatible PDU systems. All events are logged centrally in the Syslog of the respective main system.

Do I need an additional power supply for the expansion unit?

Normally not, since the unit consumes only 1 watt and is powered directly via the CAN bus by the monitoring system. For multiple daisy-chained units or long CAN bus chains, the additional CAN-12V-1A power supply is recommended to keep the voltage stable.

Do I need to select the number of dry contacts separately?

Yes. Above the shopping cart button, under "Select number of dry contacts," choose between the standard version with 32 contacts and the version with a factory-installed board for 64 contacts. Without an active selection, the standard version with 32 dry contacts will be delivered.
