The Android video door intercom with offline facial recognition in black
The Akuvox AV-R29C Black is a SIP video door intercom with a dark aluminium front panel and 7-inch touchscreen. The manufacturer promotes the R29 series as the world’s first Android door station with AI-powered facial recognition that works fully offline – without any cloud or internet connection. Typical applications according to Akuvox include multi-family residential buildings, high-rise office buildings and larger building complexes. The device runs on Android, enabling a responsive user interface and smooth video display.
Two cameras for reliable recognition: Unlike the basic version of the series, the R29C features two cameras (main and secondary camera) as well as Bluetooth, which increases recognition reliability and enables additional release methods via smartphone. The black aluminium front panel blends discreetly into dark façades and entrance areas.
Door opening is available via facial recognition, the integrated card/NFC reader, PIN code entry, Bluetooth (BLE) or QR code.
Access, video and audio in one device
The AV-R29C Black combines facial recognition, video communication and multiple access methods in a robust aluminium housing.
Offline facial recognition
AI-powered recognition directly on the device, without cloud or internet connection.
Dual camera
Main camera with 2 megapixels and automatic light adjustment plus an additional 1-megapixel camera.
7-inch touchscreen
Capacitive IPS display with 800x1280 pixels running on Android as the operating system.
RF & NFC reader
Integrated reader for 13.56 MHz and 125 kHz cards as well as NFC (Android devices only).
Bluetooth BT5.0
Release and pairing via smartphone using Bluetooth Low Energy.
How the AV-R29C Black is built
The housing of the AV-R29C is designed as a closed aluminium unit with clearly structured functional areas. From top to bottom, the device can be divided into the following sections:
Camera section with dual camera
In the upper area are the main camera (2 megapixels, automatic light adjustment) and a second, independent secondary camera (1 megapixel). The optics are complemented by an infrared LED, an additional white light LED, a light sensor and a motion sensor. The field of view covers 105° horizontal and 55° vertical.
7-inch touchscreen
Centrally located in the housing is the 7-inch capacitive IPS display with 800x1280 pixels. Video calls, visitor display, PIN entry and operation of the integrated directory are handled via the touchscreen – controlled by an Android operating system.
Card and NFC reader
Below the display is the RF reader for 13.56 MHz (including MIFARE, DESFire, Felica) and 125 kHz cards (EM) as well as NFC for door opening via compatible smartphone.
Microphone and speaker
A discreetly built-in microphone and speaker handle the two-way voice connection including echo cancellation.
Rear connections
On the rear are the Ethernet connection with Power-over-Ethernet (802.3at), a connector for an external 12 V DC power supply (if no PoE is available), three relay outputs for door openers or additional devices, three inputs as well as interfaces for Wiegand (input/output selectable) and RS485.
Housing, mounting and tamper protection
The front panel is made of aluminium in black finish; the overall housing is protected to IP65 against dust and water jets as well as to IK06 against mechanical impact. Mounting is possible either flush or surface-mounted; a tamper alarm reports forced removal attempts.
Five ways to open the door
The AV-R29C Black combines classic and biometric access methods in one device.
- Facial recognition directly via the integrated dual camera, fully offline
- Presenting an EM, MIFARE, DESFire or Felica card to the RF reader
- Entering a personal PIN code on the touchscreen
- Release via Bluetooth (BLE) with a paired smartphone
- Scanning a QR code, for example for time-limited visitor access
Practical example: A resident of a multi-family building approaches the entrance. The AV-R29C recognises the face in under 500 ms – fully offline, without any internet connection required – and opens the door automatically. A visitor instead scans a previously received QR code or enters a PIN code on the touchscreen.
Reliable recognition in every lighting situation
The camera of the AV-R29C is permanently active and automatically adapts to changing light conditions.
- Camera permanently in operation, no manual wake-up required
- Infrared LED and additional white light LED for recordings in darkness
- Automatic white balance for natural colour reproduction
- Minimum illuminance of 0.1 lux for recordings in very low light
- Facial recognition offline and without cloud connection, recognition speed under 500 ms at 99 % accuracy
- Three relays individually controllable via DTMF tones
- Motion sensor, light sensor and tamper alarm for additional security
Integration into existing systems
The AV-R29C is designed as an open SIP and ONVIF device and can be used both standalone and in larger access and video environments.
SIP
Direct integration into IP telephone systems and SIP-capable endpoints.
ONVIF
Connection of the camera image to common video management and surveillance systems, including network video recorders (NVRs) from third-party manufacturers.
Wiegand & RS485
The Wiegand port can be operated as input or output as required; via this as well as via RS485, external access readers or third-party devices can be connected.
ACMS / SDMC
Central management of multiple Akuvox devices via the manufacturer’s own management platforms, ideal for multiple sites or access points.
For voice transmission, the AV-R29C uses SIP versions v1 (RFC2543) and v2 (RFC3261) as well as the audio codecs G.711a, G.711µ and G.722, supplemented by echo cancellation, voice activity detection and a comfort noise generator. On the network side, the device supports among others IPv4, HTTP(S), FTP, DNS, NTP, RTSP, RTP, TCP, UDP, ICMP, DHCP and ARP. The camera delivers video streams in H.264 with resolutions from CIF to 1080p.
Also designed for many users as a standalone unit
The AV-R29C can manage access data locally on the device even without central management software.
Up to 20,000 users
Local user management directly on the device, up to 3,000 contacts in addition.
