Didactum Vibration Sensor

Reliable detection of shocks and vibrations

The Didactum vibration sensor is an advanced security sensor specifically designed for monitoring server rooms and critical business areas. Its main task is to reliably detect shocks, vibrations, and oscillations on walls, windows, server cabinets, or other sensitive surfaces. This is especially important for the early detection of sabotage attempts, break-ins, or other security-relevant incidents so that appropriate countermeasures can be initiated.

The sensor is installed directly at critical points such as server cabinets, access doors, or windows. As soon as an unusual shock is detected, for example due to an attempted break-in or a window being smashed, the sensor immediately triggers an alarm message to the connected Didactum Monitoring System. Real-time monitoring makes it possible to respond immediately to security-relevant events and thus protect the integrity of IT systems and other critical areas.

Vibration sensor design

The sensor is intentionally compact and robust so it can be mounted unobtrusively on almost any surface.

Inside the compact plastic housing (60 × 18 × 18 mm, approx. 60 g) is a sensitive vibration transducer that detects mechanical shocks at the mounting surface and converts them into an analog signal. On the bottom of the housing there is a small round protrusion from the factory, which can be used for optional screw mounting; if the sensor is instead mounted with adhesive or via a bracket, this protrusion can be easily cut off with a knife if needed so that the underside lies flat. The sensor is connected via a permanently attached 2-meter RJ11/RJ12 cable (6P4C, standard telephone cable), which is connected directly to an analog sensor port (A1…A8) of a Didactum Monitoring System.

How the sensor detects shocks

The integration of the vibration sensor into the Didactum Monitoring System is very straightforward: the sensor is connected via an RJ11/RJ12 patch cable to a free sensor port and is automatically detected by the system. Sensitivity thresholds can be individually configured via the user-friendly web interface. This allows the sensor to be optimally adapted to the specific requirements of the area in question. Up to five different limit and alarm values can be defined so that both minor shocks and strong vibrations can be detected in a differentiated way.

The total cable length between the sensor and the monitoring system can be up to 150 meters, which enables flexible and cost-effective monitoring even of larger or distributed areas.

Flexible mounting options

Depending on the mounting surface and requirements, three fastening methods are available.

Screw mounting

Direct fastening with a screw using the round protrusion on the bottom of the housing.

Adhesive mounting

Attachment with the included adhesive pad directly to the target surface; after cutting off the protrusion, the housing sits flat.

Mounting with bracket

Attachment using the included mounting bracket, which can be fixed either with adhesive pad or with screws and nuts to the sensor and the surface.

The sensor is installed on surfaces where vibrations can occur, such as windows, doors, or server cabinets.

Adjust sensitivity and expand the system

If required, the sensor’s trigger sensitivity can be adjusted to avoid false alarms caused by everyday vibrations or, conversely, to reliably detect even the slightest vibrations. For details on the corresponding circuit adjustment, please contact our support team.

For larger installations with multiple sensors and a higher overall number of sensor ports, the system can be expanded using a Didactum sensor expansion unit (8x analog, CAN bus). This allows large buildings or multiple server room areas to be monitored centrally and in a scalable way.

Monitoring server rooms and critical business areas

In addition to server room use, the vibration sensor is also well suited for monitoring other critical areas.

🖥️

Server room monitoring

Protection against physical attacks, sabotage, or break-ins through real-time alarms at server cabinets, doors, or windows.

🗄️

Rack monitoring

Monitoring individual racks for tampering, such as unauthorized opening or removal of hardware.

Critical infrastructure

Use at power supply systems, UPS systems, or control cabinets to detect sabotage.

📦

Storage and archives

Protection of valuable materials, documents, or sensitive goods through alerts at doors, windows, or walls.

🏭

Production areas

Monitoring machines and equipment for unusual vibrations that may indicate faults or defects.

🔒

Access monitoring

Combination with additional security sensors for comprehensive access control and alerting.

Configuration and alerting

After connection to the Didactum Monitoring System, the sensor is automatically detected. Sensitivity can be fine-tuned via the web frontend and alerting can be configured individually. Alerts can be sent by email, SMS (with optional GSM modem), SNMP trap, or through the internal alarm system.

Configuration follows the “IF-THEN” principle: if a certain vibration threshold is exceeded, for example, IT staff are notified immediately or a siren is triggered. In this way, alerts and actions are precisely matched to the requirements of the respective business area.

💡

Practical example: A vibration sensor mounted on a server cabinet detects an unusual vibration pattern indicating an unauthorized opening attempt. The monitoring system automatically sends an email and SNMP trap notification to IT staff and can additionally activate a connected siren.

Installation in a few steps

Installing the sensor is simple and efficient.

  1. Select a mounting method: screw, adhesive pad, or mounting bracket — when using adhesive or bracket mounting, cut off the round protrusion on the bottom of the housing if needed
  2. Attach the sensor to the desired surface, e.g. windows, doors, or server cabinets
  3. Connect the sensor via the RJ11/RJ12 cable to a free analog port (A1…A8) of the Didactum Monitoring System — automatic detection
  4. Fine-tune sensitivity in the web interface and define up to five limit or alarm values
  5. Configure the desired notification types (email, SMS, SNMP trap, internal alarm system) and actions according to the “IF-THEN” principle

Frequently asked questions

What exactly does the vibration sensor detect?

The sensor detects shocks, vibrations, and oscillations on the surface on which it is mounted, for example from break-in attempts, a smashed window, unauthorized opening of a server cabinet, or unusual machine vibrations.

How is the sensor connected?

The sensor is connected via its permanently attached 2-meter RJ11/RJ12 cable directly to an analog port (A1 to A8) of a Didactum Monitoring System and is detected automatically.

What mounting options are available?

The sensor can be mounted by screw using the round protrusion on the bottom of the housing, by the included adhesive pad directly on the surface, or via a mounting bracket with adhesive pad or screws and nuts. When using adhesive or bracket mounting, the protrusion on the bottom of the housing can be cut off if needed.

Can I adjust the sensor sensitivity?

Yes. Up to five different limit and alarm values can be defined in the web interface so that both minor shocks and strong vibrations can be detected in a differentiated way. For a circuit-level adjustment of the base sensitivity, please contact our support team.

How far may the sensor be from the central unit?

The total cable length between the sensor and the monitoring system can be up to 150 meters, enabling flexible monitoring even of larger or distributed areas.

How are alarms sent when vibration is detected?

Alerts can be sent by email, SMS (with optional GSM modem), SNMP trap, or through the monitoring system’s internal alarm system. Configuration follows the “IF-THEN” principle so that the desired action is triggered automatically when a threshold is exceeded.

Can I use multiple vibration sensors at the same time?

Yes. For larger installations with multiple sensors, the number of available sensor ports can be increased using a Didactum sensor expansion unit, allowing large buildings or multiple server room areas to be monitored centrally.
