The Didactum Sensor Expansion Unit 8x Analog is a highly flexible CAN bus expansion designed specifically to significantly increase the capacity of any compatible Didactum Monitoring System. Each unit provides 8 additional RJ12 ports for analog sensors and connects directly to the CAN port of the monitoring system.

Thanks to the Autosense function, all connected sensors are automatically detected and displayed in the web interface within seconds, complete with name, type, readings, and status – no manual configuration is required. This saves time, reduces sources of error, and enables fast commissioning, even for large installations with dozens of sensors.

Thanks to intelligent daisy-chain technology over the CAN bus, multiple expansion units as well as other CAN-capable devices and sensors can be easily and space-efficiently linked together in a chain – ideal for monitoring complex, sprawling, or particularly sensitive environments such as data centers, server rooms, production halls, warehouse complexes, or critical infrastructure.

Scalability in Detail

Up to 10–32 CAN devices can be combined on a single CAN bus line – the exact upper limit depends on the total line length, signal quality, and power supply used. In practice, this means you can operate not only multiple 8-port sensor expansion boxes but also digital inputs, relay modules, temperature sensors, humidity sensors, smoke detectors, door-opening sensors, or motion detectors on a single CAN bus segment.

Up to 24 units of the 8-port sensor expansion box can be operated on a single CAN bus line – equivalent to up to 192 additional analog sensor ports on just one monitoring unit. This makes it possible to monitor even large-scale facilities such as multi-story buildings, production lines, or distributed IT infrastructure with just a single central Didactum system. When the maximum chain length is reached, the CAN-12V-1A power supply is required to ensure adequate power supply along the CAN bus line.

💡

Note: Within a single CAN bus segment (i.e. between two actively terminated endpoints without a CAN power supply), the manufacturer recommends no more than 8 CAN units, sensors, and/or other CAN devices. For larger chains with more participants, use of the CAN-12V-1A power supply is required.

Power Supply and Stability

Normally, an external 12V/0.5A power supply is connected to the socket labeled "PWR." However, if only a single expansion unit is connected and the cable length from the monitoring unit to the expansion box does not exceed 10 m, the unit will also operate without an external power supply. In all other cases, using an external power supply is recommended.

In larger configurations with many expansion units, power demand increases along the CAN bus chain. This is where the dedicated CAN-12V-1A power supply comes in: it is integrated directly into the CAN bus line and reliably supplies power to all downstream devices. Without this additional power supply, voltage would drop too much across long chains or with many devices, which can lead to unstable operation or failures. It is recommended to use the power supply approximately every 8–12 units or whenever the line length exceeds 50 meters.

Flexible Mounting Options

Depending on the installation location, the expansion unit can be mounted in three different ways. The respective mounting accessories are sold separately.

Wall Mounting

Four M3 threaded holes on the bottom of the housing secure the wall bracket for mounting on a wall or surface.

DIN Rail Mounting

Two M4 threaded holes on the bottom of the unit accommodate the DIN rail bracket, used to mount the device onto a DIN rail.

19" Rack Mounting

The rackmount kit allows one or two expansion units to be mounted space-efficiently in 1 rack unit (1U) of a 19" rack.

Setup in a Few Steps

Commissioning is done without additional software directly through the monitoring system's web front end.

  1. Connect the unit's CAN input to the CAN input of the preceding CAN unit or the monitoring system using the included RJ11/RJ12 cable
  2. Set the TR bus terminators on the connected CAN units accordingly: only "ON" (i.e. "TR" position) on the last device in the chain, "OFF" on all units in between
  3. If needed, connect an external 12V power supply to the "Power" socket (required for cable lengths over 10 m or multiple units in the chain)
  4. Connect analog sensors to ports A1–A8 – they are automatically detected via Autosense
  5. Access and individually configure the expansion unit and its connected sensors in the Didactum Monitoring System's web interface under "CAN Bus"
  6. Define the desired notification and alarm types (email, SMS via optional GSM modem, SNMP trap, siren, or relay switching)

What is the Didactum Sensor Expansion Unit 8x Analog and what is it used for?

It is a CAN bus expansion that increases the number of analog sensors that can be connected to a Didactum Monitoring System by 8 ports at a time. It is needed when the built-in sensor ports of a monitoring system (e.g. 4 or 8 ports) are not sufficient and additional temperature, humidity, smoke, water, or motion sensors need to be connected.

Which Didactum Monitoring Systems is the expansion unit compatible with?

The expansion unit is compatible with all Didactum Monitoring Systems that feature a CAN bus port, including the 50T, 100T, 300T, 500T, and 550T models.

How many expansion units can I connect to a monitoring system?

Up to 24 expansion units can be operated on a single CAN bus line, equivalent to up to 192 additional analog sensor ports. Do I need an additional power supply for the expansion unit?

If only a single expansion unit is connected and the cable length to the monitoring system is 10 m or less, the unit operates without an external power supply. In all other cases, as well as when more than 12 CAN devices are in the chain, an external 12V/0.5A power supply or the CAN-12V-1A power supply is recommended or required to stabilize the power supply.

What mounting options are available for the expansion unit?

The unit can be mounted on a wall or surface using a wall bracket, attached to a DIN rail via a DIN rail bracket, or installed with up to two units in 1 rack unit of a server cabinet using a 19" rackmount kit. The respective mounting accessories are sold separately.

How do I set the TR termination correctly?

The TR switch must be set to "TR" (to the left) if the unit is the last one in the CAN bus chain or if the chain length exceeds 10 m. For all units in between in the chain, "TR" remains switched to the right (off).

Current Measurement via Hall Effect Current Transformer Directly in the Monitoring System The Didactum current transformer transmits the current values measured by a Hall effect current transformer to a Didactum monitoring system. This analog plug-and-play converter is connected to any analog port (A1 to A8) of a Didactum monitoring system or expansion unit and works with Hall effect current transformers with a 0–5V output signal and 12V DC power supply. This article describes both available variants of the current transformer together: the AC variant for AC measurements and the DC variant for DC measurements. Both variants are identical in design, connection, and functionality, but differ in the type of external Hall effect current transformer they work with. The choice between AC and DC is made directly during the ordering process via the variant selection on this product page. Configuration Individually configurable: AC or DC The Didactum current transformer is already tailored during the ordering process to match the type of Hall effect current transformer already in use or planned. ⚠️ Please note: The correct variant must be actively selected above the shopping cart button under “Select variant”. The AC variant works only together with an AC Hall effect current transformer, while the DC variant works only together with a DC Hall effect current transformer. An incorrect combination will not provide correct measurement values. Select variant AC For monitoring AC current meters. Suitable for use with AC Hall effect current transformers for measuring alternating current. DC For monitoring DC current meters. Suitable for use with DC Hall effect current transformers for measuring direct current. Both variants are identical in connection, structure, and function; details can be found in the “Structure” section below. Structure Current transformer connections The current transformer has only a few, clearly separated connections for input, output, and the external current transformer. 1 Input: 3-pin terminal block 2.54 mm pitch. The external Hall effect current transformer is connected here using 3 wires (0–5V signal and 12V DC power supply). 2 Output: RJ11 6P4C Connects the current transformer via RJ11 cable to an analog port (A1 to A8) of the Didactum monitoring system or a VT408 expansion unit. The 12V DC power supply for the external Hall effect current transformer is provided by the Didactum monitoring system via the analog port and passed through by the current transformer to the current transformer sensor. A separate power supply for the current transformer sensor is not required. Required components Matching Hall effect current transformer required The Didactum current transformer cannot be operated on its own. It absolutely requires an external Hall effect current transformer with 0–5V output and 12V DC supply, which performs the actual current measurement on the line. HALL AC current transformer Open AC current transformer for alternating current, available for measurement ranges from 5 to 50 A. AC current transformer AC current transformer for higher alternating currents, available for measurement ranges from 50 to 500 A. DC current transformer DC current transformer for direct current, available for measurement ranges from 50 to 500 A. Alternatively, any other commercially available Hall effect current transformer with a suitable 0–5V output signal and 12V DC supply can also be used. Installation Install current transformer and sensor together The current transformer sensor and Didactum current transformer are installed together. 1 Mount the current transformer sensor Secure the Hall effect current transformer with screws and nuts. The line to be measured is guided through the aperture of the current transformer. 2 Connect to the monitoring system Connect one end of the RJ11 cable to a free analog port (A1 to A8) of the Didactum monitoring system and the other end to the RJ11 port of the current transformer. 3 Wire the current transformer sensor Connect the 3 wires to the Hall effect current transformer according to the wiring diagram using the 3-pin terminal block of the current transformer. ⚠️ Safety instructions: Observe the applicable regulations for installation in the respective country as well as the relevant accident prevention regulations, in addition to internal company work, operating, and safety rules. The specified technical limits, especially the permissible ambient temperature range, must not be exceeded under any circumstances. Also check the maximum insulation voltage of the current transformer sensor and the maximum permissible cable diameter of the line to be measured before installation. Both variants are identical in connection and function. The correct variant is selected during ordering via the options menu. Can I use the AC variant with a DC current transformer sensor? No. The AC variant works only with AC Hall effect current transformers, and the DC variant works only with DC Hall effect current transformers. An incorrect combination will not provide correct measurement values. Is the external Hall effect current transformer included in the package? Precise Probe for DC Current Measurement The Didactum DC current transformer probe is a simple, open-loop Hall-effect DC current transducer that measures direct current on a cable contactlessly, without interrupting it. The cable to be measured is routed through the opening of the ring-shaped transducer; the probe converts the measured DC current into a proportional 0–5V DC output signal. This article refers to the DC-100 model with a rated current of 100A and a measurement range of 0–100 A — ideal for monitoring battery systems, DC busbars, and DC distribution lines. ⚠️ Important note: The Didactum DC current transformer probe measures the current on the cable, but cannot transmit the measured signal to a monitoring system on its own. The Didactum current transducer in the DC version, item no. DI14030-DC, is additionally required as a transceiver. It receives the probe’s 0–5V signal and forwards it via an analog port (A1…A8) to the Didactum monitoring system. Without the DI14030-DC, no display, evaluation, or alarm notification of the measured values is possible. Design Design of the Current Measuring Probe The current measuring probe consists of a ring-shaped transducer head with a pass-through opening and a 4-pin terminal block. 1 Pass-through opening (Ø 21 mm) The DC cable to be measured is routed through this opening in the ring-shaped toroidal transducer core. The probe measures the current contactlessly via the magnetic field generated. 2 Mounting tabs Two mounting tabs on the housing used to secure the probe with screws and nuts. 3 4-pin terminal block (3.81 mm pitch) Four-wire terminal for connection to the Didactum current transducer DI14030-DC. Pin assignment: G (Ground), M (0–5V measurement signal), G (Ground), + (+12V DC supply). Installation Mounting and Connection The current measuring probe and the Didactum current transducer (DI14030-DC) are installed together. 1 Mount the probe Secure the current measuring probe in a suitable location using screws and nuts.
