Didactum Magnetic Contact Sensor

Reliable access control for server rooms and critical areas

The Didactum magnetic contact sensor reliably monitors whether doors, windows, garage doors, rack doors, server cabinets, and other enclosures are open or closed wherever magnetic access monitoring makes sense. It detects the separation of two magnetically connected parts, with one mounted on the door or window and the other on the frame.

The sensor can be connected to any potential-free input (dry contact) of a Didactum monitoring system and is also compatible with third-party controllers. As a simple basic element of an alarm system, the magnetic contact sensor does not require its own power supply.

Structure of the magnetic contact sensor

The sensor consists of two separate parts that together form a reed contact (potential-free normally open contact, SPST-NO).

Magnet (without cable)

Mounted on the moving door or window. Has no electrical connection.

Sensor element (with cable)

Mounted on the fixed door frame and connected to the monitoring system via a 1.2 m cable.

Reed contact

Opens or closes depending on the distance between the two parts, which is the basis for status detection.

Compact housing

Only 29 × 18.8 × 6.9 mm in size and suitable for humid environments thanks to IP68 protection.

Mounting the magnet and sensor element

Both parts are mounted opposite each other and must be aligned precisely.

  1. Attach the magnet (without cable) to the door or window using the supplied adhesive sticker or two screws.
  2. Attach the sensor element (with the two cable wires) to the door frame or window frame.
  3. Align both parts so that they face each other directly and point in the same direction.
  4. Set the distance between magnet and sensor element to a maximum of 8–10 mm.
ℹ️

Important note: The distance between magnet and sensor element must not exceed 8–10 mm, otherwise the reed contact will not switch reliably. Both parts must also be aligned correctly with each other.

Connection to the dry contact input

The two cable wires of the sensor element are connected to a 3.5 mm terminal block. Since this is a simple potential-free contact, the two wires can be swapped in any order, so polarity does not matter. The wired terminal block is then plugged into a free "Dry Contact Input" of the monitoring system.

The maximum distance between the sensor and the monitoring system or expansion unit is up to 500 m.

Normal and alarm state

When the door is closed, the magnet and sensor element are close together and the reed contact is closed, which corresponds to the factory-set normal state. When the door is opened, the magnet and sensor element move apart, the contact opens, and the sensor switches to the alarm state.

The output state defined as the normal state for the sensor (open or closed) can be reversed individually in the monitoring system web interface if the installation situation requires it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the magnetic contact sensor made of?

The sensor consists of two parts: a magnet without an electrical connection, which is mounted on the door or window, and a sensor element with a 1.2 m connection cable, which is mounted on the frame and connected to the monitoring system.

How large may the distance between magnet and sensor element be?

The distance between the two parts may be a maximum of 8–10 mm so that the reed contact switches reliably. In addition, the magnet and sensor element must be aligned precisely with each other.

Do I need to pay attention to cable polarity when connecting it?

No. Since this is a simple potential-free contact, the two cable wires can be swapped in any order. The 3.5 mm pitch terminal block is then plugged into a free dry contact input of the monitoring system.

Which state is considered "normal" and which is "alarm"?

In the factory setting: door closed = contact closed = normal state; door open = contact open = alarm state. This output state can be reversed in the monitoring system web interface if required.

Does the sensor need its own power supply?

No. The magnetic contact sensor is a purely passive reed contact and does not require its own power supply. It is read exclusively via the potential-free input of the monitoring system.

Can the sensor also be used with controllers from other manufacturers?

Yes. The magnetic contact sensor provides a simple potential-free contact and can therefore also be connected to controllers and alarm systems from third-party providers.
