Effective Monitoring of Critical Company Areas and Server Rooms with the Didactum Magnetic Contact Sensor
The magnetic contact sensor is a key element for monitoring server rooms and business-critical infrastructures. It enables reliable access control and manipulation detection on doors, windows, roller shutters, IT racks, server cabinets, and other security-relevant access points. Especially in areas where the highest demands are placed on burglary protection, access security, and alarm notification, the magnetic contact sensor is indispensable.
Monitoring Server Rooms with the Magnetic Contact Sensor
Server rooms are the heart of a company's IT infrastructure and must be especially protected against unauthorized access, manipulation, and burglary. The magnetic contact sensor is attached to doors, server cabinets, or windows and reliably detects whether an access point is opened or closed. As soon as a door or window is opened, the sensor reports this in real time to the monitoring system. The alarm notification can be individually configured: Options include email notifications, SMS dispatch (via LTE modem), SNMP traps to network management systems (such as Nagios, Check MK, PRTG), switching relays for flashing lights or sirens, as well as direct display in the monitoring software dashboard.
By integrating with Didactum's IP-based monitoring systems, the status of every door or rack can be centrally monitored. Real-time monitoring and alerting are essential to be able to react immediately in the event of unauthorized access and to protect the integrity of IT systems. In addition, the magnetic contact sensor can also generate event logs and syslog files, enabling seamless documentation of all security-relevant incidents.
Monitoring Critical Company Areas
Not only in the server room, but also in other critical areas of a company—such as technical rooms, storage areas, archives, production facilities, or power supply systems—the magnetic contact sensor ensures effective burglary protection and access security. It can be installed on doors, roller shutters, control cabinets, or roof hatches and immediately reports any opening or manipulation to the central monitoring system. This ensures that unauthorized access or manipulation attempts at sensitive points are detected and prevented at an early stage.
Especially in companies with multiple locations or unmanned technical rooms, remote monitoring using magnetic contact sensors is an important part of the security strategy. The sensors can be flexibly combined with other security sensors such as vibration sensors or glass break sensors to create a comprehensive access control system.
Installation of the Magnetic Contact Sensor
The installation of the magnetic contact sensor is simple and flexible. The sensor unit is attached to the door or window frame using screws or the included double-sided mounting tape. The corresponding magnet is mounted parallel to it on the door or window. Installation can be done either horizontally or vertically. For secure attachment, it is recommended to thoroughly clean the surface beforehand. Alternatively, epoxy or silicone adhesive can also be used.
The sensor is connected with a two-wire cable to a dry contact input ("Dry Contact IN") of the Didactum monitoring system. The inputs are clearly labeled and numbered, so installation remains clear even with multiple sensors. The maximum cable length is usually up to 500 meters, allowing flexible placement even in large buildings.
After installation and connection, the sensor is automatically recognized by the system. The sensor can be individually configured via the web interface—for example, with its own name (e.g., "Server Room Door Contact") and the definition of the normal state ("open" or "closed"). The types of alarm and notifications are also set in the web GUI.
Application Examples
- Server room monitoring: Control of all access points to server rooms and IT racks, alarm in case of unauthorized opening.
- Access control: Securing doors, windows, roller shutters, and control cabinets in critical areas.
- Burglar protection: Immediate alarm notification in case of manipulation or opening of sensitive access points.
- Manipulation detection: Monitoring of server cabinets, technical rooms, and power systems for unauthorized interventions.
- Access security: Protection of archives, storage, and production areas against unauthorized entry.
- Remote monitoring: Use at unmanned technical sites or remote locations for central monitoring.
- Alarm notification: Automated notification via email, SMS, SNMP trap, or siren.
- Integration into building technology: Control of relays, flashing lights, or video surveillance systems.
- Event and syslog documentation: Seamless logging of all security-relevant incidents.
- Combination with other sensors: Expansion of the system with vibration, glass break, or smoke detectors.
The magnetic contact sensor is an indispensable tool for monitoring business-critical infrastructures.
Thanks to its easy installation, flexible integration into existing monitoring systems, and the wide range of alarm and documentation options, it offers optimal protection for server rooms, technical areas, and all sensitive company areas.
