DIN AC Voltage Sensor

Reliable Mains Voltage Monitoring in the Control Cabinet

The Didactum DIN AC Sensor reliably monitors the presence and level of AC voltage in server rooms, distribution cabinets, and other critical business areas. It detects undervoltage, overvoltage, power failures, and voltage fluctuations at an early stage and triggers an alarm if needed, helping prevent costly downtime and hardware damage.

As a compact DIN rail analog sensor, it can be easily integrated into existing control cabinet infrastructures and connected to any Didactum Monitoring System via a free analog sensor port (A1...A8).

Sensor Design at a Glance

The sensor is designed as a compact DIN rail housing and features two separate connection areas: the input terminals for the AC voltage to be monitored and the digital output to the monitoring system.

1

Input (screw terminals)

Two screw terminals (strip length 6–7 mm, conductor cross-section up to 2.5 mm² / 22–12 AWG) for connecting the AC line to be monitored. An internal 140 kΩ resistor is used to detect only the presence and level of the voltage — no current measurement is performed.

2

Output (RJ-11, 6P4C)

Digital autosense port (0–5V) for connection to a free analog sensor port (A1...A8) of the Didactum Monitoring System or a sensor expansion unit.

3

Housing (DIN rail, 2M)

Compact housing for mounting on a 35 mm DIN rail, optionally with 7 mm or 15 mm installation depth. Protection class IP20H / IP40H.

Installation and Commissioning

Installation is simple and flexible and can also be retrofitted into existing control cabinet infrastructures.

The sensor is mounted on a DIN rail in the control cabinet or distribution box. The AC line to be monitored is connected to the input terminals, and the RJ-11 output is connected via a sensor cable to a free analog port (A1...A8) of the Didactum Monitoring System. Thanks to plug-and-play and autosense functionality, the sensor is detected automatically and made available in the web interface for configuration.

Individual thresholds, notifications, and alarms can be defined in the web interface. Depending on the configuration, alarms can be triggered by email, SMS, SNMP trap, or by automatically switching a relay.

⚠️

Important note: To ensure that a power failure is reported reliably, the monitored line must not be protected by a UPS. However, the Didactum Monitoring System itself should be connected to a UPS so that notifications can still be sent in the event of an alarm.

Measurement Range and Technical Data

Voltage range0–246 V AC
Accuracy±1 %
Max. distanceup to 100 m
Power consumption60 mW

The sensor measures only the presence and level of AC voltage, not the flowing current. The operating temperature range is -10 °C to +80 °C at a humidity of 5 to 95 % (non-condensing).

Typical Use Cases

The DIN AC Sensor is suitable wherever stable mains voltage is business-critical.

  • Server room monitoring: Continuous monitoring of power supply for server racks, switches, and cooling systems
  • Data centers: Monitoring the supply voltage of all critical systems to ensure operational reliability
  • Industrial plants: Monitoring the supply voltage of machines and automation systems in production environments
  • Building management systems (BMS): Integration for voltage monitoring of HVAC systems, lighting, and other electrical equipment
  • Power distribution: Real-time monitoring of supply voltage directly in the distribution cabinet
  • Telecommunication stations: Ensuring a constant power supply at base stations
  • UPS systems: Integration to monitor input voltage and prevent failures caused by under- or overvoltage
  • Critical infrastructure: Monitoring of power centers, laboratories, or medical facilities with life-sustaining power supply

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the sensor connected?

The sensor is mounted on a DIN rail. The AC line to be monitored is connected to the input terminals, and the RJ-11 output is connected via a sensor cable to a free analog port (A1...A8) of the Didactum Monitoring System and detected automatically.

Does the sensor also measure flowing current?

No. The sensor measures only the presence and level of AC voltage via an internal 140 kΩ input resistor — no current measurement is performed. For current measurement, Didactum offers separate AC and DC current transformers.

Why must the monitored line not be backed up by a UPS?

If the monitored line itself is UPS-buffered, a real mains failure would not be reliably detected by the sensor, since voltage would remain present at the measuring point. The Didactum Monitoring System itself should still be connected to a UPS so that notifications can continue to be sent in the event of an alarm.

How accurate is the sensor and what voltage range does it cover?

The sensor covers a voltage range from 0 to 246 V AC with an accuracy of ±1 %.

How far can the sensor be placed from the monitoring system?

The maximum distance to the central unit is up to 100 meters. If required, this distance can be increased further using a Didactum sensor expansion unit.

Can I use multiple DIN AC Sensors at the same time?

Yes, you can connect one additional sensor to each free analog port of your monitoring unit. If the available ports are not sufficient, the number of available analog ports can be increased further with a Didactum sensor expansion unit.
