Why is Temperature Monitoring in the Server Room Important?
The environmental factor of temperature has a significant impact on the availability of business-critical server room and data center infrastructures. If the server room climate fails, overheating can lead to malfunctions and even costly hardware damage. What is the Ideal Temperature in the Server Room?

Most server manufacturers specify an allowable operating temperature range from +10 to a maximum of +35 degrees Celsius in their specifications. For local monitoring of individual servers or PCs, there are many hardware monitoring tools such as "Open Hardware Monitor" or "HWMonitor." For visualizing temperature data, the RRDtool-based Cacti is very popular as both a temperature data logger and visualization tool. For SNMP-enabled devices, measured values can be sent directly via LAN to Cacti. For comprehensive server room monitoring, network management software such as Nagios, PRTG, Zabbix, Icinga, or WhatsUp Gold is recommended, as these support SNMP temperature queries and alerting.
Which Monitoring Hardware is Suitable for IT Room Temperature Monitoring?
There are many solutions for server room temperature monitoring. Ideally, the monitoring system should be fully TCP/IP-capable, offer an integrated web server, and support multiple temperature sensors. This is especially useful if you also want to detect other physical factors such as humidity, smoke, or water in addition to temperature. A high-quality temperature sensor with a wide measuring range is important, as hotspots in server cabinets can exceed 70 degrees Celsius.
For server room security, the use of wired sensors is recommended, as they are less susceptible to interference and do not require batteries. A web interface in your native language and simple operation support quick commissioning. The graphical display of temperature values in the web interface and the export of data in XML or CSV format make evaluation and documentation easier.
The system should support SNMP temperature to enable integration with network management software. Support for SNMPv1, v2c, and v3 is important for future-proofing. Critical events such as overheating can be forwarded as SNMP traps to central monitoring systems.
A modern system for server room temperature monitoring offers not only data logger functions but also alarm management via email and SMS (using an optional GSM modem). This ensures that administrators are promptly informed of a temperature alarm, even in the event of a network failure.
