The Pre-Configured 1U Standard Version of the SPX+ Platform
The AKCP sensorProbe SPXN+ is the pre-configured 1U standard version of the sensorProbeX+ platform, which AKCP markets as “the world’s most advanced sensor monitoring device.” While the freely configurable SPX+ can be modularly assembled according to individual needs via an online tool, the SPXN+ offers a fixed, ready-to-use configuration with 8 active sensor ports, 10 dry contact I/O channels, 2 analog 0-5 VDC inputs and 2 mini relays in a single 1U rack chassis – all modules are already factory-activated, and no individual configuration is required when ordering.
Ready for immediate use: The SPXN+ is powered by default via Power-over-Ethernet and additionally features a Modbus RS485 port as well as a dedicated input for an optional external 4G cellular modem. This allows the device to be operated reliably even at sites without a fixed network connection.
Like the entire sensorProbeX+ family, the SPXN+ is also compatible with the full AKCP sensor portfolio, including modern “Smart Sensors” such as swing-handle locks, thermal map sensors in the cabinet, programmable LCD displays and battery monitoring sensors – and is fully SNMP-compliant according to SNMP v1/v2/v3.
What the SPXN+ Comes With
Unlike the freely configurable SPX+, the SPXN+ has no selectable options – the following equipment is fixed on every SPXN+.
8 Sensor Ports
RJ45 AutoSense ports for connecting any AKCP sensors; all 8 ports are already factory-activated.
10x Dry Contact I/O
Configurable dry contact inputs/outputs for alarm panels and third-party devices.
2x 0-5VDC Analog Inputs
For the direct connection of third-party sensors with 0-5VDC or 4-20mA output.
2x Mini Relays
For switching smaller loads directly or for controlling larger external relays.
PoE as Standard
Power supply by default via Power-over-Ethernet over the network cable.
Modbus RS485 & 4G Preparation
EXP port usable as Modbus RS485 interface; dedicated input for optional external 4G cellular modem.
How the SPXN+ is Built
The housing of the SPXN+ follows the low-profile design of the SPX+ family in classic 1U rack mounting with an overall width of 474.6 mm.
8 Sensor Ports on the Front
Two groups of four RJ45 AutoSense ports on the front automatically detect connected AKCP sensors. All 8 ports are already factory-activated and ready for immediate use.
I/O Dry Contacts Terminal Strip
10 screw terminals for dry contacts, configurable as input/output (0/5 VDC), pure opto-coupled 5V input or isolated voltage input.
Analog and Relay Terminal Strip
2 terminals for 0-5VDC analog inputs for connecting third-party sensors as well as 2 mini-relay terminals for controlling external devices.
ETH/PoE and EXP/MOD Port
A 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port supplies the SPXN+ by default via PoE and establishes the network connection; unlike the freely configurable SPX+, the SPXN+ has its own fixed IP address. The adjacent EXP/MOD port serves optionally as a Modbus RS485 connection or for connecting AKCP EXP expansion units.
UART Input for External 4G Modem
A dedicated input accepts an optional external 4G cellular modem and thus enables operation at sites without fixed network cabling.
Reset Button and Status Indicators
A reset button as well as LED indicators for power supply, network activity and the online/threshold status of the connected sensors complete the front panel.
Mounting
Supplied by default as classic 1U rack mounting with mounting brackets; alternatively also possible as tool-less 0U mounting or on a DIN rail.
Important difference from the SPX+: The SPXN+ has no BEB port and therefore cannot be expanded via Basic Expansion Bus units. A separate power supply or PSU bracket is also not included, as power supply is provided by default via PoE.
Unlock Additional Functions via Software License
On the SPXN+, all 8 sensor ports as well as all 10 dry contacts, both analog inputs and both mini relays are already factory-activated – no additional license is required for this. For some advanced software functions, AKCP additionally uses a license model.
- Virtual sensor packages (VS) of 5 sensors each, up to a maximum of 80 virtual sensors in total
- User authentication via a RADIUS server (license RAD)
- User authentication via a TACACS+ server (license TAC)
- Integration into building automation systems via BACnet (license BAC)
Compatible with the Entire AKCP Sensor Portfolio
The SPXN+ is part of the same sensorProbeX+ ecosystem as the freely configurable SPX+ and can accordingly be combined with any AKCP intelligent sensor.
- Environmental sensors such as temperature, humidity, airflow or air quality
- Power sensors such as contactless current meters or battery condition sensors
- Security sensors such as motion detectors, smoke detectors or vibration sensors
- Smart sensors such as thermal map sensors, RFID swing-handle locks or programmable LCD displays
In total, an SPXN+ including connected EXP units and virtual sensors can manage up to 300 sensors online. Every SPXN+ is already delivered with 10 free virtual sensors; further ones can be licensed in packages of 5 up to a maximum of 80.
Greater Reach via EXP Units
Since the SPXN+ has no BEB port, expansion is exclusively via the EXP port.
- Connection of AKCP EXP expansion units such as E-Sensor8 or E-Opto16
- Distances of up to 300 meters (approx. 1,000 feet) between the units possible
- The EXP port alternatively serves as a Modbus RS485 interface for third-party devices, supporting up to 4 Modbus devices with a total of 15 sensors
- Central management of multiple SPXN+ devices together via the AKCPro Server
Fully SNMP-Capable and Versatilely Integrable
The SPXN+ supports a broad spectrum of protocols for monitoring, notification and remote access.
SNMP v1/v2/v3
Fully SNMP-compliant for integration into existing network monitoring systems.
MQTT / MQTTS & Rsyslog
Modern IoT protocols as well as central logging via Rsyslog.
HTTPS & Encrypted E-Mail
Secure web interface and encrypted alarm delivery via e-mail.
VPN to AKCPro Server
Connection to the AKCPro Server via VPN over Ethernet or cellular network.
IPv6, RADIUS & TACACS
Support for IPv6 networks as well as user authentication via RADIUS or TACACS+ server (additional license required).
Notification Paths
Alarming via SNMP, e-mail, SMS (with optional 4G modem) as well as via the built-in signal buzzer.
For access control, the SPXN+ supports a user database with 100 users by default and optionally up to 500 users. Important to know: Via Modbus RS485, a maximum of 60 sensors in total can be managed (virtual sensors and Modbus devices combined), likewise for Modbus TCP/IP.
Developed for Trouble-Free Continuous Operation
AKCP places particular emphasis on longevity throughout the entire SPX+ family – according to their own statements, a result of deliberate design decisions.
- Aluminum housing instead of plastic for additional mechanical robustness
- Operation with only around 1 watt power consumption – no fan, no active cooling required
- Tested in climate chambers for reliable operation at up to 70 °C
- Every device is burned in for 96 hours before shipment to exclude early failures
- Own, self-developed software instead of large open-source projects, in order to be able to fix errors quickly and specifically add functions
According to AKCP, field experience with the SPX+ series shows even higher reliability: with an installed base of around 5,000 devices, there were on average only 4 RMA-required hardware failures per year – calculated, an MTBF of 10,950,000 hours.
