Functionality and Application Areas
The I/O Controller 2 connects a fully-featured RS-232/485 serial port (9-pin) as well as eight digital inputs and outputs to a LAN. The serial port can be used as a Virtual Serial Port (VSP) in Windows via the free HW VSP3 software, allowing up to 100 remote serial ports to be connected to a PC.
The digital inputs and outputs can be controlled via a web interface or the Modbus/TCP protocol, enabling seamless integration into SCADA systems or other control software.
A special feature is the Box-2-Box mode, where two I/O Controller 2 devices can be connected via LAN to tunnel serial data as well as digital inputs/outputs. This significantly extends the range of RS-232/485 interfaces and digital signals without additional cabling.
The application possibilities of the I/O Controller 2 are diverse:
- Connecting RS-232 devices such as barcode scanners, RFID readers, serial printers, or displays to a LAN.

- 1x fully-featured RS-232/485 port with 9-bit support (RxD, TxD, GND, CTS, RTS, DSR, DTR, RI, CD) and up to 115,200 baud.
- 8x digital inputs for potential-free contacts, switches, or 5–20 V DC.
- 8x digital outputs (open collector) for controlling external devices.
- M2M communication protocols: HTTP, Telnet, TCP Server, TCP Client/Server.
- Configuration via an integrated web server or Telnet.
The free HW VSP3 software enables easy integration of the serial port as a virtual COM port in Windows (including NT service and x64 systems). For developers, the HWg-SDK offers programming examples in languages such as C++, C#, PHP, Java, and more to integrate the device into custom applications. Compatibility with third-party software, such as SCADA systems, is ensured by support for Modbus/TCP and RFC2217.
In Box-2-Box mode, two devices can synchronize digital signals (8 inputs to 8 outputs) and serial data over the network, which is ideal for applications with spatially separated systems. Configuration is intuitive and is done via the web interface, which allows quick adjustment of parameters such as baud rate, parity, or trigger conditions.
Robust Design and Easy Installation
With its compact dimensions of 100 x 94 x 25 mm and a robust metal housing, the I/O Controller 2 is designed for use in demanding environments. It operates reliably in a temperature range from -30°C to +85°C, qualifying it for industrial applications.
Installation is flexible: the device can be mounted on a wall, in a 19-inch rack, or on a DIN rail. Power is supplied by an external power supply with 9–30 V DC, allowing easy integration into existing infrastructures.
