The HW group NB-2x1Wire is an IoT monitoring device for remote measurement that transmits the values of external sensors (temperature, humidity, voltage, light, CO₂, VOC and more) via the NB-IoT mobile network (Narrowband IoT) to a portal. Up to 4 sensor values from HW group 1-Wire UNI sensors can be connected to two RJ11 ports. The device and sensors are optionally powered from the internal battery (up to 3 years runtime) or via an external 5V power supply.
The NB-2x1Wire is a cloud device: it is preconfigured for the portal by default, and an expert on site is not required. The measured values are regularly sent to your user account on a portal with SensDesk Technology – the portal is required for operation. The free HWg-cloud.com service (up to 20 devices) is set up for this by default; alternatively, any other SensDesk Technology portal can be used. The NB-2x1Wire is offered as a single version – there is no variant selection.

How the NB-2x1Wire is built
The robust metal housing (approx. 67 x 78 x 33 mm, approx. 250 g) with IP40 protection class is designed for industrial environments, for operating temperatures from −10°C to +60°C and can be installed on a desk or on the wall. With optional accessories, DIN rail or rack mounting is also possible.
Compact metal housing
Robust housing for desk or wall mounting, which houses the electronics and battery compartment. Under a plastic cover is the internal battery, which is activated during commissioning.
External SMA antenna
The mobile radio connector (SMA) on the front accepts the supplied external NB-IoT antenna (transmit power 23 dBm ±2 dB, sensitivity 129 dBm).
Two RJ11 sensor ports (Port 1, Port 2)
Via the two RJ11 connectors, sensors with a total of up to 4 sensor values can be connected; the cable length per port is a maximum of 60 m. Behind the connectors are two LEDs that indicate an alarm on the respective port.
SIM card slot (NB-SIM)
The slot for the NB-IoT SIM card is located on the side of the housing. In the delivered “Subscribed” version, the preconfigured SIM card is already included; a separate NB-IoT SIM card can be used after consultation with the manufacturer.
Power connection and status LEDs
A barrel jack (5 V, Ø 3.5 x 1.35 mm) enables mains operation; two LEDs (Status and Setup) indicate the device status.
Device hash on the type plate
On the device there is a label with a device hash (e.g. 1234-5678), which is used to register the device in the portal (“Device Adoption”).
Battery or power supply – flexible and low-maintenance
Thanks to the energy-efficient NB-IoT radio, the device can operate for years from the battery. Alternatively, a power supply is available.
Internal battery (CR123A)
Lithium 3 V, non-rechargeable. Runtime up to 3 years with only one temperature sensor at 20°C and a transmission every 10 hours – depending on the number of sensors and measurement interval.
External 5V power supply
Operation via the 5V barrel jack (approx. 120 mA); the 5V power supply is included in the scope of delivery.
Sensor supply
External sensors can be powered from the internal battery. Some sensors, however, require an external power supply.
Emergency power option
A UPS (12V/5V) is available as an accessory, which can protect 5V devices in mains operation.
Mobile radio for remote locations – without LAN or WiFi
NB-IoT is operated by commercial mobile network operators, but is a different technology from GSM, LTE or Cat-M1. The advantage is the low power consumption, which allows devices to run for months and years from a battery.

Own SIM card: A genuine NB-IoT SIM card must be used (different technology and frequencies from LTE). The device must be specially configured for your SIM card – please contact us before purchasing. For projects from around 200 devices, a dedicated hosted SensDesk portal instance is recommended.
SensDesk Technology: from free cloud access to your own instance
All IoT monitoring devices must be connected to a SensDesk Technology portal in order to function. The portal makes installation easy even for junior staff and sends alarms, manages devices remotely and consolidates all sensors, graphs, reports and the open API in one place. Users can migrate their devices between the available SensDesk Technology portals at any time.
HWg-cloud.com (free, limited)
Manufacturer’s portal preconfigured by default for up to 20 devices: e-mail alarms, device failure alarm and basic device management. Advanced SensDesk Technology features are not included.
SensDesk.com (paid)
Several subscription plans with SMS and voice call alarms, graphs/multi-graphs with historical data, PDF reports, alarm escalation, history log and open API. According to the manufacturer, portal costs are around 15% of the hardware costs per year.

Alarms via the portal – fast and reliable
The NB-2x1Wire sends its measured values to the portal; alarms are triggered and forwarded there.
Safe Range
A safe value range (SD SafeRange) is defined for each sensor in the portal. If the value is outside this range, an alarm is triggered.
E-mail alarms
Even in the free HWg-cloud.com portal, e-mail alarms are sent in the event of limit value violation or device failure.
SMS & voice call
With the paid portal services, you are immediately notified by SMS or voice call to your mobile phone in the event of an alarm.
Device Invalid Alert
The portal alarms if the device is not powered or does not respond for 1 hour.
Alarm escalation
Alarms from the portal can be escalated – to higher intensity or to another person if the problem persists.
Remote relay
In response to an alarm, the portal can also switch a remote relay output, e.g. to switch on a siren.

Commissioning in a few steps
Setup of the NB-2x1Wire is performed entirely via the portal – there is no web server in the device.
- Establish power supply: connect the power supply or remove the plastic cover so that the internal battery powers the device
- Connect sensors to the RJ11 ports and mount the antenna
- The device connects to the NB-IoT network via the SIM card
- Open a user account on the free HWg-cloud.com portal
- On the “My Team” page in the “Device Adoption” section, enter the device hash (e.g. 1234-5678) from the device label
- After a short time, the new device appears in the portal’s device list
- Name the device and sensors and set the SD SafeRange for each sensor

Practical example: On a remote construction site without a network, the NB-2x1Wire monitors the temperature in a material container with the supplied 3-metre temperature sensor. The device runs from the internal battery and sends the values via NB-IoT to the portal. If the temperature leaves the defined range, the responsible person automatically receives an e-mail – and with a paid portal service, also an SMS or a call if desired.

What is the HW group NB-2x1Wire and what is it used for?
The NB-2x1Wire is a battery-powered NB-IoT remote measurement device for external 1-Wire UNI sensors with up to 4 sensor values. Are there different variants or options?
No. The NB-2x1Wire is offered as a single version – the preconfigured “Subscribed” version with prepaid NB-IoT SIM card (3 years), battery, power supply and temperature sensor.
Is a portal required?
Yes. The NB-2x1Wire is an IoT monitoring device and only works together with a portal based on SensDesk Technology. The free HWg-cloud.com portal (up to 20 devices) is preconfigured by default; alternatively, paid portals such as SensDesk.com or portals from local providers can be used. Devices can be migrated between portals at any time.
How long does the battery last?
The internal CR123A lithium battery powers the device and temperature sensor according to the manufacturer for up to 3 years – with only one temperature sensor, 20°C and a transmission every 10 hours. The actual runtime depends on the number of sensors and measurement interval; some sensors additionally require an external power supply.
How many sensors can be connected?
Via two RJ11 ports, sensors with a total of up to 4 sensor values can be connected (only 1-Wire/1-Wire UNI sensors from HW group, maximum 60 m per port). A physical sensor can provide several values, e.g. temperature, humidity and VOC.
What is NB-IoT and where does it work?
NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT) is an energy-efficient mobile radio technology offered by regular network operators, but differs from GSM, LTE and Cat-M1. The supplied SIM card uses the global Vodafone network and can be used in most countries; other operators are possible on request.
Can I use my own SIM card?
Yes, but only a genuine NB-IoT SIM card (not LTE). The device must be specially configured for your SIM card – please contact us before purchasing the SIM card. For projects from around 200 devices, a dedicated hosted SensDesk portal installation is recommended.
How are alarms sent?
Alarms are sent by the portal, not directly by the device. Even the free HWg-cloud.com portal sends e-mail alarms in the event of limit value violation and device failure; SMS and voice call alarms as well as alarm escalation are available with the paid portal services. A device failure alarm is triggered if the device does not respond for 1 hour.
Does the device have a LAN or WiFi interface or a web server?
No. The NB-2x1Wire has neither Ethernet nor WiFi nor an integrated web server. All configuration and evaluation is done via the portal; the sensor values are available there as well as via XML/SNMP API and in the HWg Monitor app.
