HW-group Spider: Flexible Sensor Hub for RS-485 and 1-Wire Sensors
The HW-group Spider is an active converter that connects up to four dry contacts or 1-Wire sensors (RJ11) via an RS-485 bus (RJ45) to devices of the Poseidon series, such as Poseidon2 4002 or Poseidon 2250. This compact sensor hub enables easy expansion of monitoring systems in complex cabling scenarios, such as those found in server rooms, industrial facilities, or data centers. By cascading multiple Spider units, up to four units can be connected per Poseidon 2250, allowing the number of sensors to be flexibly scaled. With its robust construction, the option for power supply via the RS-485 bus or an external power supply, and simple configuration via DIP switch, the Spider is ideal for server room monitoring and remote monitoring.
Main Features of the HW-group Spider
The HW-group Spider offers a reliable and flexible solution for integrating sensors into monitoring systems. Here is an overview of the key features:
- Four inputs: Connection of up to four dry contacts (e.g., smoke detectors, door sensors) or 1-Wire sensors (e.g., temperature, humidity sensors) via RJ11.
- RS-485 bus: Reliable data transmission over up to 1200 m with two RJ45 ports for cascading multiple Spider units.
- 1-Wire compatibility: Supports 1-Wire sensors such as temperature (e.g., Temp-1Wire) or humidity sensors (e.g., Hum-1Wire).
- Flexible power supply: Operation via the RS-485 bus of the Poseidon unit or an external 12V power supply (barrel connector, required when using two or more Spider units).
- Easy configuration: DIP switch for setting the address (sensor ID) on the RS-485 bus for quick setup.
- Fast response: Detection of extremely short dry contact pulses (from 30 ms) for precise monitoring.
- Robust design: Compact dimensions (approx. 100 x 70 x 25 mm) and durable construction for industrial use.
- LED indicator: Signals when a sensor value is read or a dry contact is switched.
Application Areas of the HW-group Spider
The HW-group Spider is versatile and ideal for scenarios where additional sensors need to be connected over longer distances. Typical application areas include:
- Server rooms and data centers: Monitoring of environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity or security detectors such as smoke and door sensors for server room monitoring.
- Industrial facilities: Integration of dry contacts for monitoring machines, access points, or system voltages (e.g., UPS function, voltage failure).
- Building management: Connection of sensors for air conditioning, motion detectors, or water detectors in building management systems.
- Remote monitoring: Real-time notifications via Poseidon2 devices by email, SMS, or SNMP trap in case of status changes.
- Expansion of 19-inch racks: Simplified cabling along the walls of racks or cold rooms, e.g., for temperature monitoring in supermarket freezers.
Why the HW-group Spider is the Right Choice
The HW-group Spider is the perfect solution for expanding monitoring systems in complex environments. Compared to other sensor hubs, it offers the unique combination of RS-485 and 1-Wire support, cascading, and easy installation. The use of standard RJ45 and RJ11 connectors facilitates integration into existing systems, while reliable RS-485 technology ensures stable data transmission over long distances. The ability to connect both dry contacts and 1-Wire sensors makes the Spider especially versatile for Poseidon2 integration. Its compact design and fast response to short pulses (30 ms) make it ideal for server rooms, industrial facilities, and building management systems.

Integration with HW-group Products
The HW-group Spider is optimally matched to devices such as Poseidon2 4002, Poseidon 2250, or other Poseidon models with RS-485 interface. It enables the integration of up to four sensors per unit, with up to four Spider units per Poseidon 2250 cascaded, allowing up to 50 sensors to be connected with one S-Hub. Alarms and sensor data are reported in real time via LAN, GSM, SNMP, or Modbus/TCP. The free HWg-PDMS software enables analysis and export of data to Excel for detailed reports. Connection to the SensDesk portal offers additional visualization options via Android or iOS apps.
Installation and Setup
Installation of the HW-group Spider is simple and efficient. The Spider is connected to the Poseidon unit via an RJ45 cable, and up to four dry contacts or 1-Wire sensors are connected to the RJ11 ports. When using multiple Spider units, connection is made via daisy-chain (RJ45). The last Spider on the RS-485 bus must have the jumper set to "LAST", all others to "MIDDLE". The address is set via DIP switch. For more than one Spider unit, an external 12V power supply is recommended. Sensor configuration is done via the web interface of the Poseidon unit or the HWg-PDMS software.
The HW-group Spider is the ideal solution for flexible expansion of monitoring systems in server rooms, industrial facilities, and building management systems. With its support for RS-485 sensors, 1-Wire sensors, dry contacts, and cascading, it offers a versatile platform for remote monitoring and Poseidon2 integration. Optimize your server room monitoring with the HW-group Spider.
