The NB-IoT device for two digital inputs and S0 pulse counters
The HW group NB-2xIn brings two digital inputs (DI) into a monitoring portal via the NB-IoT mobile network (NarrowBand IoT). Each input reads the 0/1 state of a dry contact, which the portal can then evaluate. In addition, S0 pulse outputs, for example from water, gas or electricity meters, can be connected and counted.
The device is designed for connecting door contacts as well as smoke, gas and motion detectors with dry contact output and allows the operation of two independent sensors. Since data transmission takes place via mobile communications, it is particularly suitable for locations without LAN or WLAN infrastructure.
The NB-2xIn is based on HW group’s SensDesk technology: device and portal come from the same manufacturer and are seamlessly matched to each other. Setup is done with just a few clicks; the device is added to the portal via remote connection.
Please note: The NB-2xIn is an IoT monitoring device that requires a portal based on SensDesk technology for operation. As a preconfigured standard solution, the manufacturer provides a free portal with limited functionality (HWg-cloud.com); advanced features are available through paid portals.
What can be connected to the NB-2xIn
Each of the two inputs detects a potential-free contact and can alternatively count S0 pulses.
Dry contacts
Any detectors or switches with potential-free contact output whose state (0/1) is evaluated in the portal.
Door contacts
Detect open or unintentionally left-open doors and windows.
Smoke, gas and motion detectors
Detectors with dry contact output for fire, gas leak and intrusion monitoring.
Power detector / switch
Monitoring of power failures or switching states, for example via the matching Power Detector.
Electricity, water and gas meters
Any third-party meter with S0 pulse output can be connected; the pulses are counted and displayed in the portal.
How the NB-2xIn is built
The device is a compact metal housing with external antenna and groups all connections on the housing sides.
Metal housing
The robust metal housing is designed for industrial environments and achieves protection class IP40. It can be placed on a table, mounted on a wall or fitted to a DIN rail with the appropriate accessories.
Two digital inputs
The two labelled inputs for the dry contact or S0 connection of the connected sensors are located on the side of the housing.
External antenna (SMA)
The mobile radio antenna is connected via an SMA connector and can be better aligned if necessary to optimise reception in the NB-IoT network.
NB-SIM slot
The NB-IoT SIM card is inserted via a slot on the front of the housing. It is already included in the standard version.
Power supply: battery or 5 V power adapter
The device is operated with an internal battery or via an external 5 V power supply connection (barrel connector). According to the manufacturer, the battery provides a runtime of up to three years.
Status and setup LED
Two indicator lights on the front of the housing signal the operating and setup status of the device.
Hash label
The device has a label with the device hash, which is used to add the device in the portal.
Mobile connectivity without your own network infrastructure
With NarrowBand IoT, the NB-2xIn offers energy-efficient and secure data transmission even for remote locations.
- Standard version (“subscribed”) is supplied with an NB-IoT SIM card with 3 years prepaid service from HW group
- Connectivity is provided by Vodafone; the device can be used in most countries
- Alternatively, a third-party NB-IoT SIM card can be used; LTE cards are not compatible
- With your own SIM card, data can be delivered to a self-hosted SensDesk installation, recommended from around 100 devices

Evaluation via SensDesk technology
The portal centralises device management, remote updates, charts and alarming.
Free portal
HWg-cloud.com is provided as a preconfigured standard option with limited functionality, but offers email alarms and basic remote management of the device; according to the product page for up to 20 devices.
Paid portals
Several providers are available, including SensDesk.com with various subscription plans. The device can be moved between portals.
SMS and voice call alarms
With the paid portal services, alarms are also reported by SMS or voice call to any mobile phones.
Charts & PDF reports
Historical data can be displayed in charts (including MultiGraphs) and evaluated as PDF reports.
Open API
All sensor values are available via open interfaces such as XML and SNMP for further processing, for example in SCADA systems.
Mobile app
The SensDesk Mobile app shows all input states from your portal account directly on your smartphone.
Notification on every status change
The portal reacts to status changes of the inputs and to the failure of the device itself.
- Alarm by email (with paid services also by SMS or voice call) as soon as an input is switched on or off
- The alarm state (0 or 1) can be set individually for each input
- Additional alarm if the device is no longer reachable
- Individual alarm conditions, for example an email if a door has been open for more than 10 minutes
- Notification to multiple recipients, according to the product page up to five
- Alternatively SMS alarming via the optional gateway HWg-SMS-GW3
Battery operation or power adapter
The NB-2xIn runs optionally with an internal, non-rechargeable battery or with an external 5 V power adapter. According to the manufacturer, the battery lasts up to three years; the actual runtime depends on usage and measurement intervals. For continuous operation on the mains, a 5 V wall power adapter can be used.

Commissioning in a few steps
Setup of the NB-2xIn is done entirely via the portal.
- Connect the device to the power supply or insert the battery
- Connect the antenna and insert the NB-IoT SIM card if not already done
- Connect sensors to the two inputs
- Add the device in the SensDesk portal by entering the device hash
- Set the alarm state for each input and configure notifications
- Optional: Display meter pulses for water, gas or electricity meters in the portal

Do I need a portal to use the NB-2xIn?

Is a SIM card included?

The portal sends emails on status changes of an input and also informs if the device is no longer reachable. With paid portal services, additional SMS and voice call alarms are possible. You set the alarm state individually for each input.
Where can the device be mounted?
The metal housing (protection class IP40) can be placed on a table, mounted on a wall or fitted to a DIN rail with the appropriate mounting accessories.
How long is the warranty?
The manufacturer HW group grants a warranty of 24 months.
