The HW group Expander 4xDI 1W-UNI is an expansion module that allows up to four additional digital inputs (dry contacts) to be connected to the 1-Wire UNI bus. This enables further detectors such as a push-button, a door contact or the relay of a smoke detector to be connected.
The expander is compatible with Ares, Poseidon 2250, Poseidon 4002 and all Poseidon2 products. Alarms can be configured separately for each dry-contact input, and the expander can be combined with further sensors on the same 1-Wire UNI bus.
4 additional digital inputs on the 1-Wire UNI bus
The Expander 4xDI 1W-UNI expands compatible HW group devices with four freely usable dry-contact inputs.
4x DI (IN1–IN4)
Four digital inputs for dry contacts (NO/NC), e.g. for push-buttons, door contacts or the relay of a smoke detector.
2x RJ11 (1-Wire UNI)
One RJ11 connection for the bus input and another for the bus output, allowing further sensors or expanders to be connected.
Bus-powered
Usually powered directly via the 1-Wire UNI bus; in some configurations an external 5 V power supply is required.
Combinable & cascadeable
Multiple expanders can be connected in series and combined with other 1-Wire UNI sensors on the same bus.
How the Expander 4xDI 1W-UNI is designed
The compact plastic housing measures approximately 65 x 80 x 30 mm and weighs about 70 g, with protection class IP23 for desktop or wall mounting. Operating conditions: -40 °C to +85 °C at 5–90 % relative humidity.

2x RJ11 (bus input & bus output)
One RJ11 port connects the expander to the active port of a Poseidon or Ares device (or to an upstream expander); the second RJ11 port allows the bus to be continued to the next sensor. A 3 m cable with 2x RJ11 is included.
4 terminals for digital inputs (IN1–IN4)
Four screw terminals for dry contacts (NO/NC). The COM pin is connected to the GND of the 1-Wire UNI bus; an input is considered “On” at 0–500 Ω. The status of each input is updated once per second.
Sensor allocation on the bus
The expander always occupies 4 sensor positions on the 1-Wire bus limit of the connected device – even if only 2 of the 4 digital inputs are actually used.
No galvanic isolation
The digital inputs are not electrically isolated from the 1-Wire UNI bus; appropriate precautions must be observed during wiring.
Power limits and boost options
An active RJ11 port of a Poseidon or Ares device can supply power to a maximum of two expander units.
- Maximum cable length: 60 m total length from the active port of the Poseidon/Ares device
- From the third expander unit onwards, a separate power supply is required
- Power boost via an external 5 V power supply directly on the expander
- Alternatively: connection of multiple expanders via the “1-Wire hub Power”, whose ports are all supplied via a common 12 V DC power supply
This allows even larger installations with multiple expanders and further sensors to be reliably powered without impairing the signal quality on the 1-Wire UNI bus.
Commissioning in just a few steps
The Expander 4xDI 1W-UNI is configured directly via the compatible HW group device and does not require its own interface.
- Connect the expander with the supplied 3 m RJ11 cable to the active RJ11 port of an Ares, Poseidon or Poseidon2 device
- If more than two expanders are used: use an external 5 V power supply or a “1-Wire hub Power”
- Connect detectors (push-button, door contact, smoke detector relay, etc.) to terminals IN1–IN4
- Configure the newly detected digital inputs on the Ares or Poseidon device
- Define alarm rules individually for each input (e.g. e-mail, SNMP trap or SMS via an external gateway)
- Optional: connect further expanders or 1-Wire UNI sensors in series

Practical application example
An Ares 14, for example, has 8 directly connectable sensor values. If 2 of these values are used for a combined temperature/humidity sensor, 6 positions remain for further sensors or expanders.
- Two Expander 4xDI 1W-UNI units together occupy 8 sensor positions and provide 8 digital inputs (dry contact)
- Additionally one combined temperature/humidity sensor (2 values)
- On the Ares 14 in this example, 4 further sensor positions remain free
Practical example: In a data centre, a total of eight dry contacts are connected via two Expander 4xDI 1W-UNI units: door contacts, a smoke detector relay and several push-buttons. Together with a temperature/humidity sensor on the same bus, the higher-level Ares or Poseidon device reports every status change by e-mail, SMS (via an external SMS gateway) or SNMP trap.
