Damocles2 1208: Secure Remote Control and Monitoring for Industrial IoT Applications
The Damocles2 1208 and Damocles2 1208 Set from HW group are powerful network devices specifically designed for monitoring and controlling digital inputs and outputs over a LAN. With 12 digital dry contact inputs (DI) and 8 digital open collector outputs (DO), the device is ideal for applications such as remote monitoring, energy consumption measurement, smart buildings, and security surveillance. Integration with the SensDesk portal and support for modern M2M protocols such as HTTPS, IPv6, SNMPv3, and MQTT make the Damocles2 1208 a robust solution for the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT).

Functionality and Applications
The Damocles2 1208 offers 12 digital inputs (DI) with 32-bit S0 pulse counters that retain their values even during power outages. These are excellent for capturing consumption data from water, gas, electricity, or other meters. The 8 open collector outputs (DO) can control external relays, for example, to activate 110/230V sockets via a PowerEgg2 module.
Additionally, the device supports up to 8 virtual digital outputs (VDO), which can be linked over the network with physical outputs of other Damocles2 or Poseidon2 devices in the same LAN (Box-to-Box mode).
Configuration is simple via a built-in web server, and remote monitoring is possible via the free SensDesk portal or the SensDesk Mobile app (iOS and Android). Alarms can be sent on input status changes via email, SNMP trap, SMS, or call (via HWg-SMS-GW3 or HWg-Trigger with external GSM modem).
Support for over 50 SNMP and SCADA applications as well as the MQTT protocol enables seamless integration into existing monitoring and IoT systems, including MS Azure, AWS IoT, and other cloud services.
The device stores over 250,000 records in its internal data logger, which can be converted into costs per time period and exported to MS Excel using the HWg-PDMS software. Programming examples in the HWg-SDK (including C#, PHP, JAVA) facilitate integration with third-party software such as SCADA systems.
Application Examples
- Remote device monitoring: Monitoring UPS systems, air conditioning, or security systems.
- Smart buildings: Controlling lighting, heating, or other systems based on sensor data.
- Energy consumption measurement: Capturing and analyzing consumption data from water, gas, or electricity meters.
- Security and surveillance systems: Alerting on status changes of dry contacts (e.g., door sensors, smoke detectors).
- SCADA integration: Connecting external inputs to industrial control systems.
- IoT solutions: Connecting to cloud platforms via MQTT for data-driven decisions.
Technical Integration
The Damocles2 1208 connects to the network via an Ethernet interface (RJ45, 10/100 BASE-T) and supports secure M2M protocols such as HTTPS, IPv6, SNMPv3, and MQTT. Data transmission occurs either via the HWg-Push protocol to the SensDesk portal, HWg-PDMS software, or third-party systems via MQTT IO. Alternatively, data can be sent via email (POP3/POP3S) to PDMS. The SensDesk portal provides a user-friendly interface for displaying current values, graphical trends (up to 3 months), and configuring alarms. Power supply is via 9–30 V DC or optionally PoE (Damocles2 1208 Set).
Intelligent Alarm and Control Functions
When a digital input status changes (e.g., closing of a dry contact), the Damocles2 1208 can send alarms via email, SNMP trap, SMS, or call. These alarms can be configured with delays (e.g., alarm if a door remains open for more than 5 minutes). In Box-to-Box mode, a virtual output (VDO) of a Damocles2 or Poseidon2 device can activate a physical relay of another device on the same LAN, enabling flexible remote control. Support for TLS-encrypted emails and compatibility with the HWg-SMS-GW3 gateway ensure secure and reliable communication.
Advantages of the Damocles2 1208
- Compact design: Metal housing (140 × 90 × 40 mm), suitable for wall or DIN rail mounting.
- Energy efficiency: S0 pulse counters retain values during power outages.
- Flexibility: Support for open collector outputs and virtual outputs for complex control scenarios.
- Security: Use of modern protocols such as HTTPS, IPv6, and SNMPv3 for secure data transmission.
- Scalability: Integration with cloud platforms and SCADA systems for comprehensive IoT solutions.
