Industrial I/O with Enhanced IP Security and Open-Collector Outputs
The HW group Damocles2 1208 is an industrial I/O device for controlling digital inputs and outputs over LAN. It provides 12 digital dry-contact inputs (DI), all equipped with S0 pulse counters with memory to connect water, gas, electricity, or other meters. Additionally, the Damocles2 1208 controls 8 digital open-collector outputs (DO) and excels with a particularly favorable cost-per-I/O ratio.
Configuration is performed via an integrated web server. For remote monitoring over the internet, a SensDesk Technology portal in combination with the SensDesk Mobile App for iOS and Android is suitable. The device also works with HWg-PDMS and HWg-Trigger and uses secure M2M protocols (HTTPS, IPv6, SNMPv3). Thanks to support for over 50 SNMP and SCADA applications, the Damocles2 1208 can be integrated into a wide variety of existing monitoring and control systems; the MQTT protocol additionally enables connection to IoT solutions.

Practical Application Examples
- Remote monitoring of systems and equipment
- Smart buildings
- UPS monitoring
- Security and surveillance systems
- Alarm indication
- Energy consumption measurement
- Connection of external inputs to SCADA systems
Practical Example: In a technical room, the Damocles2 1208 counts the S0 pulses of electricity, gas, and water meters via several digital inputs and simultaneously monitors smoke, motion, and door contact detectors. When a critical condition is detected, the device automatically switches one of the eight open-collector outputs to activate an alarm signal and simultaneously sends an e-mail and an SNMP trap to system monitoring. The counted pulses are regularly read out with HWg-PDMS and converted into costs per period for MS Excel export.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the HW group Damocles2 1208 and what is it used for?
The Damocles2 1208 is a LAN-based I/O device with 12 digital inputs and 8 open-collector outputs that can be remotely controlled via the integrated web server or a SensDesk portal. It is particularly suitable for applications with many I/O points such as remote monitoring of systems, smart buildings, UPS monitoring, and energy consumption measurement.
What is the difference between the two options?
"Damocles2 1208" is the industrial single device without accessories. "Damocles2 1208 Set" is the recommended starter package and additionally includes a matching power supply. The desired variant is selected above the shopping cart.
How many digital inputs and outputs can be connected?
The Damocles2 1208 provides 12 digital inputs (I1–I12) with pulse counting function and 8 open-collector outputs. Additionally, up to 8 virtual digital outputs (VDO) can be used to remotely control outputs of other HWg devices on the network.
What is the difference between open-collector outputs and relay outputs?
The 8 outputs of the Damocles2 1208 are designed as open-collector outputs (up to 50V, max. 500mA per output, max. 1,500mA across all 8 outputs). Unlike relay outputs, they are particularly suitable for directly switching smaller DC loads or as signal generators for downstream controls and contribute to the device's favorable cost-per-I/O ratio.
What are virtual digital outputs (VDO)?
Virtual digital outputs are up to 8 outputs that can be assigned to physical outputs of other Damocles2 or Poseidon2 devices on the same LAN. This allows an alert on the Damocles2 1208 to directly trigger an output on a remote device (M2M communication, Box2Box).
How are SMS or call alerts sent?
The Damocles2 1208 does not have its own GSM/LTE modem. SMS and call alerts ("SMS + Ring") are possible either via the HWg-Trigger software with an external GSM modem or via an HWg-SMS-GW3 gateway on the same LAN.
How is the Damocles2 1208 powered?
The device is powered via 9–30 V DC through a barrel jack. PoE or a -48V version are not available for the Damocles2 1208 according to the manufacturer. A matching power supply is included only in the Set package; for the single device it must be obtained separately.
What distinguishes the 2nd generation (Damocles2) from the 1st generation Damocles?
Compared to the 1st generation, the Damocles2 1208 newly includes an advanced IP filter, SNMPv3, HWg-Push (SensDesk portal connection), netGSM (HWg-SMS-GW3), virtual outputs (XML), pulse counters (S0), HTTPS, IPv6, and MQTT (IoT portals). One feature of the 1st generation, group alerting, is omitted in the Damocles2 1208.
How many records does the internal logger store?
The integrated logger stores more than 250,000 records of the digital inputs and outputs (DI, DO).
What security features does the device offer?
The Damocles2 1208 supports HTTPS-encrypted configuration, SNMP v1, partially v2, and v3, IPv6, and an advanced IP filter for access restriction.
