The mains voltage detector and switch for remote power monitoring
The HW group PowerEgg2 is a mains voltage detector and switch for 110 to 230 V AC. It detects power supply failures (single-phase, max. 8 A load) and can additionally be remotely controlled via a relay. The PowerEgg2 can be connected to any device with digital inputs (DI) and/or digital outputs (DO). The control circuit and switched circuit are galvanically isolated; only low-voltage normally open contacts are used for voltage detection and output control.
The PowerEgg2 is designed as an inline mains socket with two IEC 320 connections – a plug (C14) on the input and a socket (C13) on the output. It combines two functions in one device: as a DETECTOR, it detects the presence of mains voltage at the input (indicated via a changeover contact); as a CONTROL, it disconnects the output voltage (controlled via an external DC voltage or a contact). The PowerEgg2 is offered in a single version; there are no variants or options for this model.
Two functions in one device: detect and switch
The PowerEgg2 combines reliable mains voltage detection with a remotely controllable disconnection function.
DETECTOR function
Detects the presence of 110 to 230 V AC mains voltage at the input; a voltage failure is reported via a galvanically isolated changeover contact.
CONTROL function
Disconnects the output voltage, controlled via an external DC voltage (3–12 V) or a low-voltage normally open contact; voltage flows through as long as the control contact is not closed.
Two IEC 320 connections
The plug (C14) on the input and the socket (C13) on the output make the PowerEgg2 an inline mains socket for direct integration into existing circuits.
Galvanic isolation
The control circuit and switched circuit are completely galvanically isolated, enabling safe connection to any monitoring device.
Up to 8 A load
The switched output voltage (230 V) supports a maximum load of 8 A (8,000 mA).
Universally connectable
The detector and control inputs can be connected to any digital input/output of a Poseidon, Damocles or I/O controller.
How the PowerEgg2 is designed
The robust plastic housing (approx. 58 × 124 × 41 mm, approx. 146 g) is designed for desk, wall or rack installation, has an IP23 protection rating and is designed for industrial, SoHo and IT environments with operating temperatures from -20 °C to +80 °C (0–80 % RH).
Plastic housing with IEC 320 connections
The front of the housing contains the two mains connections: an IEC 320 C14 plug for the incoming mains voltage and an IEC 320 C13 socket for the pass-through output voltage.
Terminal block for the DETECTOR output
A screw terminal block provides the galvanically isolated changeover contact through which a connected monitoring device detects the presence or failure of the input voltage.
Terminal block for the CONTROL input
A second terminal block receives the control signal – either a DC voltage of 3 to 12 V or a simple low-voltage normally open contact – with which the output voltage can be remotely controlled.
Power supply via the input
The internal electronics of the PowerEgg2 draw their own power directly from the mains voltage present at the IEC 320 C14 input (approx. 13 mA current consumption); a separate power supply is not required.
Connection to Poseidon, Damocles & more
The PowerEgg2 is deliberately manufacturer-neutral and designed for digital inputs and outputs, allowing it to be integrated into existing HWg monitoring systems.
- The DETECTOR output can be connected to any digital input (DI) of a Poseidon, Damocles or I/O controller device
- The CONTROL input can be controlled via any digital output (DO) – relay, open collector or 3–12 V voltage signal
- No additional software or portal connection is required on the PowerEgg2 itself – evaluation and control are performed via the connected HWg device
Installation in a few steps
The PowerEgg2 is inserted as an inline mains socket into the circuit to be monitored and connected to the monitoring device via the terminal blocks.
- Place or mount the PowerEgg2 at the desired location (desk, wall or rack)
- Connect the incoming mains voltage to the IEC 320 C14 plug
- Connect the device to be monitored or switched to the IEC 320 C13 socket
- Connect the terminal block of the DETECTOR output to a digital input of the monitoring device
- Optional: Connect the terminal block of the CONTROL input to a digital output of the monitoring device to remotely control the output voltage
- In the web interface of the connected device, name the digital input or output and define the alarm or switching logic
Why the PowerEgg2 is the right choice
Two functions in one device
Voltage detection and remote switching combined.
Easy integration
Inline mains socket that can be inserted directly into existing circuits.
Galvanically isolated
Safe isolation between the control and load circuits.
Universally connectable
Compatible with any device with digital inputs/outputs.
Up to 8 A load
Sufficient power for servers, network equipment and more.
24-month warranty
According to the manufacturer, with a 24-month warranty from the date of purchase.
Practical application examples
- Alarm triggering in the event of a power failure
- Monitoring the input/output voltage of a UPS
- Remote restart or shutdown of servers
- Activating additional cooling or ventilation
- Partial shutdown of loads during battery operation
Practical example: A PowerEgg2 is inserted between the mains supply line and a Poseidon2 3268 in the server rack. If the mains voltage fails, the DETECTOR output immediately reports this via a digital input of the Poseidon2, which then sends an e-mail or SNMP trap notification. At the same time, the Poseidon2 can use the CONTROL input of the PowerEgg2 to selectively disconnect individual loads from the mains if required, for example to extend the runtime of the UPS when operating on battery power.
Frequently asked questions
What is the HW group PowerEgg2 and what is it used for?
The PowerEgg2 is a mains voltage detector and switch for 110 to 230 V AC that, as an inline mains socket, detects voltage failures and can also remotely control the output voltage. It is used to report power failures and to remotely switch devices such as servers, fans or cooling systems.
Are there different variants or options?
No. The PowerEgg2 is offered in a single version. There are no variants or options for this model.
How do the DETECTOR and CONTROL functions work?
The DETECTOR function detects whether mains voltage (110–230 V AC) is present at the input and reports this via a galvanically isolated changeover contact. The CONTROL function allows the output voltage to be selectively disconnected: as long as the control contact is not closed, the voltage flows through (output = input); control is performed either via an external DC voltage of 3 to 12 V or a simple contact.
Which devices can the PowerEgg2 be connected to?
The PowerEgg2 is manufacturer-neutral: the DETECTOR output can be connected to any digital input (DI), and the CONTROL input to any digital output (DO) – for example, to devices from the Poseidon or Damocles product families or an I/O controller.
What load can the PowerEgg2 switch?
The switched output voltage (230 V) supports a maximum load of 8 A. The changeover contact of the DETECTOR function is additionally rated for up to 120 V AC/60 V DC and 1,000 mA.
Does the PowerEgg2 require its own power supply?
No. The PowerEgg2 draws its own power directly from the mains voltage present at the input and requires only approx. 13 mA. A separate power source is not required.
Is the PowerEgg2 safe for connection to control devices?
Yes. The control circuit and switched circuit are completely galvanically isolated, and only low-voltage normally open contacts are used for voltage detection and output control. The device is also TÜV SÜD safety certified.
