The galvanically isolated signal converter for 0-20 mA industrial sensors on the 1-Wire-UNI bus
The HW group Sensor 0-20mA 1W-UNI is a galvanically isolated DC current sensor for the 1-Wire-UNI bus. It measures currents in the range of 0 to 20 mA from an external current source and outputs the measured value via the 1-Wire-UNI bus (RJ11). The current input is electrically isolated from the output bus. Typically, the sensor is used to connect an industrial probe with a 0/4–20 mA output (“Source” type, 4-wire with its own power supply), for example to measure the level in a tank.
In this way, almost any industrial sensor can be connected to Poseidon2 or Ares devices. The measured values are then available via LAN or GSM/LTE; if the current falls outside the defined range, an e-mail or SMS is sent. The data can also be passed on to remote monitoring systems based on SNMP or Modbus/TCP. The Sensor 0-20mA 1W-UNI is offered as a single version – there are no variants or options for this model.
Industrial current-loop measurement with calibration and unit conversion
The Sensor 0-20mA 1W-UNI turns an analogue current signal into a full measured value in the HWg monitoring system – if required, converted directly in the sensor into the desired unit.
Input 0–20 mA
For external current-sourcing probes of the type “0-20mA DC (Source)”, input voltage max. 30 V; accuracy 2 % of the full 20 mA range (at 25 °C), resolution 0.1 mA.
Galvanic isolation
The 0-20 mA input is electrically isolated from the 1-Wire-UNI bus (RJ11) – this protects the monitoring device from interference and potential differences.
8-point calibration
The sensor has a calibration curve with 8 points, allowing the measured value to be precisely adapted to the connected industrial probe.
Unit conversion in the sensor
Standard display in [mA]; conversion e.g. into [m], [mm], [hPa] or [ppm] directly in the sensor – the correct value thus also appears in e-mails, SMS messages and the web interface.
2× RJ11 (1-Wire UNI)
Two RJ11 connectors enable daisy-chaining with further sensors; maximum total cable length 60 m from the active port.
Powered via the 1-Wire bus
Power supply with 5 V directly via the RJ11 port (approx. 20 mA).
How the Sensor 0-20mA 1W-UNI is constructed
The compact plastic housing (approx. 65 × 80 × 30 mm, approx. 200 g) with side mounting tabs is designed for table or wall mounting indoors, has protection class IP23 and is suitable for operating temperatures from −40 °C to +85 °C (5–70 % RH); the storage environment ranges from −30 °C to 60 °C (5–95 % RH).
Plastic housing with mounting tabs
The grey housing carries the product labelling on the top and has side tabs for wall mounting; it is designed as a converter for indoor installation.
Two RJ11 connectors for the 1-Wire-UNI bus
One RJ11 port connects the sensor to the active 1-Wire port of the Poseidon2 or Ares device (data and power supply); the second port allows the bus to be continued to further sensors. A 3-metre connection cable is included in the scope of delivery.
2-pole terminal block (I+ / I−)
At the input of the sensor there is a 2-pole screw terminal block to which the external current source (the 0-20 mA probe) is connected with positive and negative leads.
Protective fuse at the input
The current input is protected by a fast-acting 63 mA fuse that protects the sensor and the connected monitoring device in the event of overcurrent.
Galvanically isolated converter circuitry
Inside, the electronics convert the measured current (once per second) into a digital value and transmit it via the 1-Wire-UNI bus. Input and bus are galvanically isolated from each other.
Bus-powered – with option to boost supply for multiple sensors
The sensor is powered directly via the 1-Wire-UNI bus (RJ11) and normally requires no separate power source.
Bus power supply
5 V via the RJ11 port of the connected Poseidon2 or Ares device, current consumption approx. 20 mA.
Maximum 2 sensors per port
One active RJ11 port can supply a maximum of two sensors of this type.
1-Wire hub Power
To boost the supply and branch the 1-Wire-UNI bus, the “1-Wire hub Power” is recommended (hub for 1 to 8 sensors with 8× RJ11, with external power supply).
Adaptation to the connected probe with the 1W-UNI USB Calibrator
With a calibration tool for MS Windows, the sensor can be precisely adjusted to the industrial probe in use.
- Calibration on a curve with 8 different points
- Conversion of the input signal into an output unit such as [mm], [hPa], [m] or [ppm]
- Conversion directly in the sensor – correct values in e-mails, SMS messages and web interface
- Carried out with the 1W-UNI USB Calibrator (USB-RJ11 cable with software) or the 1Wire HWg-UniCalibrator software
Compatible with Poseidon2, Ares and other HWg devices
The Sensor 0-20mA 1W-UNI can be connected to all HWg devices with a 1-Wire-UNI-capable RJ11 connector.
- Poseidon2 (including 3266, 3268, 3468, 4002)
- Ares 12 / Ares 14
- Poseidon 2250 and Poseidon 4002
- SiteMon5
- IoT devices with RJ11 sensor connection (e.g. NB-2x1Wire, SD-2x1Wire)
Ares 12 with GSM/GPRS: The Ares 12 device supplies the current sensor, reads the data and, in the event of a threshold violation, sends SMS messages (up to 5 numbers), alarm e-mails or reports to an online portal. The internal Ares battery provides backup power for the sensor.
Installation in a few steps
The Sensor 0-20mA 1W-UNI is connected to the industrial probe via the terminal block and to the monitoring device via RJ11.
- Place the sensor on the wall or on a table in an indoor location
- Connect the external 0-20 mA probe (“Source” type) to terminals I+ and I− on the terminal block
- Connect the RJ11 port of the sensor to the 1-Wire port of the Poseidon2 or Ares device (max. 60 m total cable length)
- If more than two sensors are connected to one port: use a “1-Wire hub Power” to boost the supply
- The sensor appears automatically in the configuration interface of the connected device
- Name it there and set the SafeRange (thresholds) for alarms
- Optional: calibrate the sensor with the 1W-UNI USB Calibrator and convert it to the desired unit

Frequently asked questions
What is the HW group Sensor 0-20mA 1W-UNI and what is it used for?
The Sensor 0-20mA 1W-UNI is a galvanically isolated signal converter that measures a 0-20 mA current from an external industrial probe and passes it via the 1-Wire-UNI bus (RJ11) to a Poseidon2 or Ares device. It is used to integrate industrial sensors such as current transformers, pressure transmitters, scales or level probes into HWg monitoring systems.
Are there different variants or options?
No. The Sensor 0-20mA 1W-UNI is offered as a single version. There are no variants or options for this model.
What does “Source” type mean?
“Source” means that the connected probe supplies the current itself (current-sourcing output, typically a 4-wire probe with separate power supply). The Sensor 0-20mA 1W-UNI only measures this current and does not power the current loop. For probes that are to be powered by the converter (“4-20mA sink”), the Sensor 4-20mA 1W-UNI is available.
Which devices is the sensor compatible with?
The sensor can be connected to Poseidon2, Ares 12/14, Poseidon 2250, Poseidon 4002 and SiteMon5 – in general to HWg devices with a 1-Wire-UNI-capable RJ11 port.
How accurately does the sensor measure?
The sensor measures in the range 0–20 mA with an accuracy of 2 % of the full 20 mA range (at 25 °C) and a resolution of 0.1 mA. Measurement takes place once per second. With the 8-point calibration, the measured value can additionally be adapted to the respective industrial probe.
How many sensors can be operated on one port?
One active RJ11 port can supply a maximum of two sensors of this type. For more sensors or to branch the bus, the “1-Wire hub Power” is recommended, which is powered by its own power supply. The total cable length must not exceed 60 m from the active port.
How can the measured value be converted into other units?
By default, the measured value is output in [mA]. With the calibration tool (1W-UNI USB Calibrator with software for MS Windows), a conversion into other units such as [m], [mm], [hPa] or [ppm] can be set directly in the sensor, so that e-mails, SMS messages and the web interface also display the correct value.
Is the sensor protected against overcurrent?
Yes. The input is protected by a fast-acting 63 mA protective fuse; in addition, the current input is galvanically isolated from the 1-Wire-UNI bus.
